OK. we have 13 people, including Chris Tree.
My proposal is this:
- 2 groups, I'm in both.
-Everyone makes his/her mix and all the copies and then sends ALL of them to me
-Also send me 3 bucks or so to cover my postage costs back to you.
-I will make piles for each person and mail them off.
-please don't send plastic covers, they break and take up space in the mailings- paper envelopes or those thin little folders are fine
-please DO include titles of songs and artist and album if you are feeling generous so that those who want can go buy the whole thing LEGALLY
-post your playlist here so others can be exited and jealous and want to join our cool club
-People who flake out on this really really suck and can expect Bad Karma.

group details to come.

Does this sound legit?
Any suggestions? Pm me if you like...

Why don't you guys just put all the music on one gmail account, create one folder for each person, that person put all the MP3s in that folder, and just give each other the user ID and password.

It's much faster and there's no problem with shipping costs or loss mail and much safer for everyone because you are not revealing a real physical address.

uh oh! Are you aiding and abbetting us criminals???

Sounds like a great idea but I don't have a gmail acct, and actually, dumping a whole lot of music in there seems even less in the spirit of what I am trying to do (not break the law) What do others who have signed up think??? Does anyone want to take over the tech aspects of this and send me a gmail invite

Do you have one yet? I can hook you up. Not as much in the spirit... but cheaper by far.

If someone PM's me with an email address, I can send you a gmail account invite but that's about as far as I can go with "helping"

You can't argue with the convenience of it, that's for sure... but it doesn't seem quite to follow with the original intent. I don't want to argue the legality of either choice, but making a mix CD seems a whole lot more benign than having the ability to share out entire music collections.

That said, I would still be up for doing it either way. I think I'd still want it in a "mix format" if we went the gmail route, though ... meaning, instead of just a random collection of tunes, I'd want to know what order the person putting it together wanted the songs in. I know when I put together mixes, I give some thought to that.

Just my $.02.

OK, I'll jump in.  I made a pre-race warm-up CD for our last trip to Sac and I like it very much.

Call me old-fashioned, but I like the original way best so long as it's not overly burdensome for Hollis.

I tried to say I wanted to play too, but I don't see my message on this thread so it may not have worked. If I can still join, I vote for mix cds also with the caveat that it isn't too hard on Hollis.

I agree with the above. I am on a dial up and it would be slow to download. But I also don't want to make it too hard on anybody.

I think this is good enough reason to go with the original idea of making CD's, as long as Hollis doesn't mind being the distribution center.

This might be a stupid question... we would put together the CD's with regular .wav files rather than .mp3 files, right? We want something we can stick in our CD players and have it work... if we want MP3's we can rip them ourselves once we get them?

I say we finalize our list of who's doing it, and then set a date by which the CD has to be in the mail. I'm getting excited about hearing a bunch of new music!!!

I'm cool with mailing CDs, though. But if anyone wants to do the gmail thing, that works for me.

OK. I agree with the majority, I am happy to be the distribution ctr if you all promise to help me w/ postage. The original rules stand. I will now attempt to take all names of interested parties and make small groups. Following this post, no more players accepted (for this round) If someone else wants to organize another one, go for it.

Please have 6 copies of your mix in the mail to me no later than Oct 14. I will have your packets back to you in time for thanksgiving so you can drown out your relatives with good tunes. BRB with list of participants.

Just to be sure I'm clear, we're sending .wav files that can be played in any CD player, right?

Oh, and I'm a stickler for correctly named files, so I would like to suggest that each CD come with a list of songs and artists.   DUH!  I just re-read the posts on the first "page".

hmmm, I was thinking mp3s. For now, let's stick with that, I don;t want to have to convert for the ole ipod.

We have two Europeans, Chris Tree and macfights-- would you guys be willing to play amongst yourselves or organize on for the Euros on BT in order to avoid $$ and customs hassles? Pwetty Pweawse?

There are actually 15 of us, and I am #16 for each group. So make 5 copies.

Groups are, in the order you signed up:

max
brett
himself
GrodiJo
ChipmunkHeart
Possum

stupidnickname
madkat
ttma
Rennick
hikergrb
Possum

Starting to Tri
misscullen
MATriMom
Badger Ironman
Chriscal
Possum

Reminders:

-accurate artist/song info
-please include postage
-please don;t send plastic covers
-please don;t flake out
-the intent of this is NOT to steal music but to share great stuff with one another and hopefully turn us all on to new things that we will then buy.
-themes not necessary but are fun if you feel like it
-don;t forget your return address so I can mail you the goods!

I will PM the first person in each group my address. you will then PM the next in line, and so it goes until everyone has my address (our boxes here are too small for me to fire them all out) and also then we can verify that everyone is still in on this. Last one in the groups pm me. OK?

Okay, another question:

Since we're doing mp3's rather than .wav files.... are we filling up an entire CD with mp3's? Because that could easily be upwards of 100 songs. Or an hour or two worth of music? Or does it matter? I know I started thinking about this yesterday, and to put music together that doesn't repeat an artist a whole bunch of times, I'm looking at about 17-25 songs (I don't have the most extensive music collection in the world....).

Oh, and does anyone have an opinion about the bitrate that the mp3's are ripped to? I deal with wma's (I'm not a citizen of the iPod nation!) and will need to go back to the original CD and rip from there....

(hmmm... I guess that was more than just one question.....)

Did we decide on how many songs to include on the CD?  I can fill a CD with mp3s, but want to be sure that's the plan.

My plan was to make a mix of about 15-17 songs, first few to warm up to, last few as a cool down...
