By the way, I heard that expressing Christmas as X-Mas is Anti-Christian, hense the use of the X.  Anywone else hear of this

Xmas
This abbreviation for Christmas is of Greek origin. The word for Christ in Greek is Xristos. During the 16th century, Europeans began using the first initial of Christ's name, "X" in place of the word Christ in Christmas as a shorthand form of the word. Although the early Christians understood that X stood for Christ's name, later Christians who did not understand the Greek language mistook "Xmas" as a sign of disrespect.

I think we as society have self corrupted the meaning of Christmas.  I was watching the news last night and all they kept talking about was how busy stores were, sales compared to last year, which stores had the best sales, how much people are spending this year, and freaking out that stores are profitting as much as last year.  The media can be blamed for some of the corruption, as well as us selfish humans who fall into the trap.  Just my thoughts.

Something different that we are doing in our family is donating the money we would normally spend on gifts and donating that to a charity, for us it's the Heiffer Project. We don't do this every year, but it's something that we can organize together as family easily at Christmas time and really feel like we are making an impact on the lives of people.

It really bugs me when all people focus on is doing their Christmas shopping. I mean c'mon. Why not take the time it takes you to shop and stress over presents, and use that time toward a more giving, productive cause.

What bugs me most, is people who knock Christians and our beliefs, but then want to celebrate the holiday all out not realizing that Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus? It's not about presents. I find that soo hypocritical. They want to celebrate the "worldly" idea of the holiday, but not the Chrisitan meaning. Glad to get that off my shoulder. To me, if you don't believe then don't celebrate.

I'm not a Christian but my wife is Catholic so I'm stuck with the stupid holiday. I hate Christmas and believe me when I say that if I could, I'd boycott it every year. My wife on the other hand loves it and would kill me if I played Scrooge. So I guess what I'm saying is that I have no problems knocking you for your beliefs and yes I know how hypocritical it is to celebrate Christmas. But what can I do?

But what can I do?

What any good man would do...excatly what your wife tells you to do.

"I hate Christmas" Can I ask why an otherwise lighthearted individual would "HATE" spending time with family, giving and receiving a present or two, eating some good cookies, perhaps getting a day off of work or so, and looking at the city or town decorated with lights?

Those are all aspects of Christmas that don't involve Christ or religion. Is it because you think the above doesn't mesh with celebration of a religious holday? I mean, c'mon, we can make distinctions and celebrate religiously and secularly at the same time, can't we?

I think society has corrupted the meaning of life not just the holidays. Why decry gratuitous consumption at Christmas when it takes place all year long? Christmas spending is just symptomatic of the larger problem of conspicuous consumption and consumption as therapy.

Bascially what the Bible says is that you should not be unequally yoked.  It refers to oxen, and when their unequally yoked they can't walk int he straight line.  They basically keep going around in cirlces.  Well the same applies to Christianity.  We're taught through the following verse that we should be equally yoked- meaning that Christians should be with other Christians.  In other words, Christians shoudn't be with non-Christians.  There's a lot to say about this.  Some Christians frimly believe this and others do not.  Anyways, I'll leave it at that.  I don't want to offend anyone.  Just wanted to share

2 Corinthians 6:14 (New International Version)

Do Not Be Yoked With Unbelievers
14Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

haha, and I do what she says like a champ!

I love the cookies, the big meal, the spending time with the family. I just hate the big check I have to write every year. It really really grates me.

Uh chipmunk how did you just blow through that?

Best of luck to you and I hope that is truely a wonderful gift for Christmas.

As for the other. I have a child, he knows themeaning of Christmas but I still get all warm and fuzzy inside when he opens gifts on Christmas that Santa brought him (he is 6). He writes a letter to santa and to see a child open something and think that the person he told he wanted this toy, got it for him is a wonderful feeling. Especially when he thinks he heard Santa on the roof.

Yes I think it sucks that Christmas now starts in early November for the retailers but they are just answering the call of what the shoppers want; if no one went out the day after Thanksgiving no retailers would open at 5 a.m.

I am just saying to all of you parents and none parents. Chrismas (the Santa part) is for kids, for the rest of us it is for the birth of Christ. Remember the three wise men did bring gifts when they went to Bethleham.

I do not think I really made a point in all of this. Just wanted to say something I guess...

ChipmunkHeart - 2005-11-29 10:36 AM

Everyone should def. rent the movie/documentary "Touching the Void". It's like "Into the Thin Air", only way, way better.

Christmas in my family was always considered to be a celebration of family and the spirit of giving.

Nothern Italy rocks.

I have a date for my heart surgery: Dec. 16th. A new heart for a christmas present to me!

But the wise men only brought Baby Jesus 3 gifts- and that was to celebrate his birth.  I think kid's these days get showered with more than 3 gifts.  I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that you can't really compare the 3 wise men giving Jesus gifts and they way we give gifts.

Then there's the secular idea of being equally yoked. If both you and your partner can accept and respect your differences, respect that your spiritual life is not a matter for a religious construct, but rather a matter of supreme individual choice - if you can respect that - then you can cohabitate with each other and move forward through life, rather than in a circle.

Your quote equates nonbelievers with the wicked; this is a fallacy. It is possible to live a life outside the Christian set of beliefs and rules and still be a person of light (not darkness). Two persons of light can be considered to be equally yoked.

I do understand your bias, Janelle, as I share a same type of bias, only the flip side of the coin. I don't want to be yoked to a Christian who doesn't accept that I can choose my own spiritual path, even if that path is outside the Christian path. However, if I met a Christian man who respects that my spiritual journey is MINE and not his or not the church's then we could likely get along really well.
