I disagree. If he's lying now, he'll lie later. You will wear yourself out trying to figure out what is true and what's not. No chance for him to explain - people that do **** like that have self esteem issues and don't feel like they have value on their own. If he doesn't value himself, he won't value you.

Lying about why I didn't pick up the dry cleaning or whatever is a lot different than lying about who you are, your motives or your relationship.

 Why waste your time?

Bill Richardson said he was drafted by a major league baseball team.

George O'Leary said he had a Master's degree.

It goes on.   I think its called teenie-weenie disease.

Me, I jump tall buildings in a single bound.

I thought a W rant was coming too.

IF (big if) you've really written him off and are not going to talk to him anymore you should email him a link to this thread, just for the sport of it.

You guys are probably right.  Lying is one of the biggest poisons in a relationship.

Everybody has faults, though.  Just call him on it and see what he says.  Is it an embedded character flaw of his, or was he just trying to impress Renee in the moment.  Maybe he walked away saying to himself, "That was really a dumb thing to say, you idiot".

Or maybe he's a pathological lier.

Any chance he was talking about his training?  Maybe he ran a 3:30 marathon but never ran more than a half-marathon in training.

It took me reading a good 6-8 posts on this thread before I figured out why you called him pantsonfire.  At first my mind was in the gutter, and then I thought it was because he ran fast.  Good Lord, what is happening to my brain?  Since I stopped watching tv I am getting stupid....now go figure that one out.

I would say NOPE based on this: "I can't even imagine 19 miles or a full marathon.  Not really in my psyche."

It's not really in my psyche to consort with untrustworthy people. I don't even know how to respond to this. I can't reason with someone who thinks it's reasonable to fabricate who he is.

I would not have been unimpressed if he had never run a marathon... but knowing that he blatantly lied about running a marathon leaves me very unimpressed. He now looks foolish to me.

*sigh* I'm ready for this thread to die. Where's Stupidnickname?

"Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive!"

One can only assume "pantsonfire" found you to be such an interesting woman that he wanted to impress you in a big way.  Not that I condone lying, but hey, you are a rather attractive young lady!  Some guys have such a low opinion of themselves that they feel a need to lie about their exploits and accomplishments in order to conform to a woman's vision of a prospective mate ... whatever that is.  Anyways, your confronting this poor guy would only serve to lower his self esteem further.  What would that give you?

Michel, I agree that confronting him is not the answer.

What is peculiar (to me) is that he has a stellar 'resume'; he is an accomplished and busy executive. He has real accomplishments that he could talk about if he wanted just to impress me. (He also told me he went to Emery U on a baseball scholarship but now I'm wondering if that was a fabrication, also). He's a bit of an elitist snob, something I've tried to overlook. If he has athletic accomplishments of which he is proud, good for him but it doesn't change my opinion of his character - and it's his character that I had hoped to admire. Anyway, I do understand that one can still suffer from low self-image or regard while still building an impressive (on the facade) life.

I think he is a weak and dishonest man (geez that looks harsh in print) and it saddens me to be confronted with this character flaw. However, I don't feel the need to be candid with him about my feelings. That would just be cruel - and what would that say about my character?

I don't know which is worse -

A.) He lied to impress you - indicating deceit
or
B.) He forgot his lie - indicating stupidity.

ghart2 - 2006-01-25 9:29 AM If I take my 8 best 5K's and add them all up I could say I covered 26.2 in 3:30 minutes.  Just remember Renee, there's always a loophole.

See, this is why I would have lasted 30 seconds as a Mrs. Clinton. Loopholes are for lawyers, not relationships.

If the spirit of the message is to deceive, then you have deceived me. I don't need an airtight, legally binding case to know that I am being misled. It's enough to know I've been misled.

Guys... for those of you who belong to the "all guys lie to impress chicks" party... lying is so lame. And utterly unimpressive. Has the total opposite effect of what you're going for. FYI. FWIW. M2C. IMNSHO.

I agree. When I started dating my ex-boyfriend, I uncovered a few "little white lies" that he had told me during the trying-to-impress-the-chick stage. But, then those little white lies became bigger and bigger and four years later those lies led to the demise of the relationship. Starting out by being dishonest (no matter how trivial you think the lie is), is not a good thing. Gentlemen, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me the truth...I'll respect that much more than I'll respect the cool thing you said you did but didn't really do, even if I think you actually did it.

Is POF coming to Gasparilla?  Maybe you should invite him to run with us!  We could probably weasal a lot of erroneous information out of him in the course of 26 miles.  It might be rather entertaining!

I don't think I need to explain being disappointed when I discover I've been deceived. Getting to know someone is how we learn to trust them (or not). Discovering that someone is untrustworthy always disappoints me, and is a clear indication that they do not belong in my life. I don't understand why being trustworthy is difficult for some people but I also don't understand weak people.

Perfect? Please, don't be snotty. Trustworthy? Totally.

How about you? Either of you - would you call yourselves TRUSTWORTHY?
