Should have read this before I went to the pool this morning!  It was crowded with people barely moving and standing around half the time.  Then to make it worse they closed down 3 of the 4 lanes for a water aerobics class and the girls that got there after my son and I, took the only lane left.  On the plus side, they did share with us, so I can't be upset about that.

Regardless, this is great advice, thank you for posting.

... The bubbler is blocked by someone who is trying hard not to look totally out of their element.

Someone did their school years near Milwaukee Yeah, pool was overly crowded today.

Nope. From Boston.

Wow. Never heard it from anyone raised away from Milwaukee. Interesting

They are bubbler in RI too!

I must be a total spaz at the gym, I don't know what a bubbler is, unless it is what I do sometimes after swimming for a long time and swallowing alot of air,  I hope I didn't block one

Strangely enough, I know what a bubbler is too, and I grew up about as far away from the Midwest/East Coast as it's possible to get on Earth ...

Thanks for the beautiful reminder, Mike. Not about the bubblers. About the gym folks. We don't really have them here in Indonesia, but there will be a spate of new folks looking to get into endurance sports, and I want to be there for them.

I remember being that beginner:  getting dirty looks because I took somebody's spin bike (there are 30 but people are creatures of habit).  More dirty looks for taking their locker (same reason as spin bike).  Interrupting the 5am swim crowd from their routine.  Of course then I swam all of 10 minutes before almost drowning.

Today, I try to hold my patience.  I really do.  I don't have a favorite spin bike or a favorite treadmill. The only thinkg that annoy's me the most is the pool.  No not those that don't shower.    The newbs don't understand the concept of sharing a lane so they take it personally when you get in their lane.  I just try to go at 5am when the gym opens and be one of the first in the pool.  Sucks, but solves the problem most of the time.

I do wish them the best of luck.  Sticking to 'working out' has to be one of the hardest commitments to maintain.  Thus the reason by February, the crowd has returned to normal levels.

OK, I understand the need for supporting the newbies at the gym, but last night went swimming at 8:45 pm.  All by myself in a lane, got in a nice 1.5K workout.  It was good.

I had a ball with 3 noobies in the pool,  2 getting ready for their first tri (Iron Girl Las Vegas), and the other with good technique just getting back in the pool after some time.  I love it, but then I'm just an easy going guy.

I went to Lifetime Fitness in Cary, which is normally ridiculously crowded, Monday night to watch the end of the Rose Bowl and the first half of the Fiesta Bowl.  I fully expected it to be packed with the new year's hopefuls.  But it was EMPTY!  Maybe it was because the place is toxic from the new lacquer on all the hardwood, but how would the new people know this?  Odd!

I love resolutionists. Sure they are everywhere, and many are totally clueless about etiquette. Don't forget however, that many of them have committed to paying for a 1 year membership to your gym. They will be here for a month but are helping keep our costs down for the rest of the year.

Resolutionists actually boost my motivation and remind me to never forget my beginners spirit. I try to smile and nod to the new faces at the gym. It takes courage to do something that makes you step out of your comfort zone, and a Gym can be an intimidating place. However, come Feb, things will be back to status quo and come spring there will be new friends to be made at the pool with those who are training for Tri season.  Happy New Year

funnily ebough i swam yesterday for the 1st time in 2012 and went to the gym today for the 1st time in 2012 and I fully expected the pool to have atleast 10 to a lane and the gym be jam packed.

How wrong was I !

I guess the economic climate has some positives for us afterall ! I had 4 in my lane and had no wait for machines at all in the gym ! Result !! Now all i need is to find a physio willing to work for free and sort out my tendinitis !

Dang, that post completely read my mail!  I was just complaining last week (as I do every year) about the new resolutionists that show up in jeans and a sweatshirt with the single purpose of getting in my way.  I was oone of them a few years ago when I couldn't run a full mile without stopping.  I guess it is a good thing people were nicer to me than I have been to the new ones this year.  Attitude has now been adjusted.  Thanks!

I haven't been to the gym yet this year, but I did do a Zumba class last night (a paramedic at my fire station teaches) that was jam-packed!  Usually there are between 30-40 people there, but there had to be at least 60 people last night, mostly new faces.  I'm very happy that there were so many people there trying to get in better shape, but if they all stay, we'll need a bigger room!

I had to keep reminding myself of this post every time I nearly got stepped on or hit in the head cause we were in such closer quarters.  It'll be interesting to see how many of them come back next week, since there were a bunch of new songs and some of them were really tough!

One upside to the resolutionists - you get a ready audience when you swim! Most of them are in awe of anyone who can swim faster than 1:50/100yds, so they'll often stand at lane's end staring slack-jawed at your (MOBOP) swim ability =)

I was a hater of the resolutionists last year, this year I used the thought of a packed gym to drive me outside and get the bike/run miles in.

That plus the un-seasonably mild Chicago winter has to be taken advantage of.

You don't even have to be that fast-I get that swimming 2:00-2:10/100

ditto.  Even better is my neigherhood pool (which is long enough for lap swimming) I go sometimes when there are these 3 older ladies in there.  They think I am the bomb.  If only they knew...

dandr614 - 2012-01-02 5:34 PM Thanks for posting, I was aggravated today at the gym for my swim.  I will "try" and remember this tomorrow when I go back to the pool.

Been on BT for a few years but never saw this thread until this AM.  Love it!

This morning in the pool locker room I started talking to a chunky guy with trunks trying to learn to swim.  He is signed up for a local Sprint with his buddies and is using it to get motivated to get in shape.  He made it 100M today and was gassed.  I swam a slow 1200M just trying to get back into it for a June 1/2 IM.  I recounted my first few weeks in the pool in 2008 and how 1-2 lengths would kill me.  I recommended the TI triathlon swimming book as a good beginner reference.

Thanks for reminding us of the joy of sharing this passion of ours and welcoming everyone to share in it.  I hope everyone I see this month sticks with it.  They will just have to expand the parking lot and get more equipment.  We can all learn to swim 4 to a lane.

On my way into work I drive past a smaller chain workout places with lots of windows facing the street. Every week there is at least a 20% decrease in their parking lot, only a few more weeks of the revolutioners.
