I've been on the road since 1996, and the general rule is: Never eat at a chain....so I always try to get local. You can only eat at so many Chili's or TGI's before the answer is just 'no'.

As far as current cities, I've got good information on Detroit, New York, Leiden NL, Raleigh-Durham, Las Vegas, and Newport / Cosa Mesta, CA - the rest will be dated. PM if interested, not gonna post all of 'em on this thread. However, current travel has me in Raleigh, NC, and there are four favorites:

   - Smokey's BBQ, in Morrisville. It's a hell-hole, but it's authentic, and damned good,
   - Lucky32 in Cary, upscale southern fusion,
   - Irregardless Cafe in Raleigh, the ultimate hipster joint, and
   - An, which is where all the Chinese people I work with take their bosses to because it's that good.

X1,000,000 on Smokey's. Get the combo to experience the wings and ribs both.

When I'm in the Philly area, look for Totaro's in Conshohocken. Pat's steaks in South Philly is my favorite cheesesteak.

In Nutley, NJ, Mamma Vittorias is spectacular. West Orange, NJ is Pals Cabin for char-broiled steaks.

If you ever find yourself in Orange County the Bluewater Grill in Newport Beach is incredible.

In Long Beach Fuego in the Maya Hotel is a great choice for new age Mexican food.

Best part is that both places are on the water so the views are incredible.

Another great place in Raleigh is: 42nd street Oyster House. The oyster sampler appetizer is killer: Great rockefellers. Shrimp and Grits is fantastic. Their fin fish is always fresh and prepared perfectly.

I also like The Angus Barn in the triangle. Yep, it's a tourist spot, but the food and service is very good.

Don't bother with "The Pit" made famous on Man v Food and Food network. It's OK, but nothing special.

If you ever find yourself driving East from San Diego through the desert in the Imperial Valley for some reason, stop at Camachos Diner.  Do yourself a favor and get a Special Quesidilla.  Its a heart-attack on a plate, but well worth it.  They are only made in the Imperial Valley

Several years ago I flew into San Diego to drive to El Centro. Wish I would've known about it then.

Well if for some reason you have to come back down, send me a PM

All you Chicago-ites!  My DH is flying into Chicago on Saturday, driving down to Lafayette that afternoon, and then going to the Superbowl on Sunday!  (just a BIT jealous here)  Got a restaurant suggestion for the Lafayette area for Saturday night?
