I'd like to go for another round

Name: Bulfrog / Andrew

Age: 27

Story: In mid 2009 I weighed 300lbs, so started dieting and eventually running to lose weight. At the end of the year, weighing around 220lbs, I did my first HM with a friend. When doing the half marathon we heard about a new race that was starting up, the "northern crossing" multisport race from NZ's West to East coast. In 2010 I did the 100km Duathlon option. I enjoyed the duathlon so much that adding the 3rd sport was the only way to go so in early 2011 I did 2 sprint tris, which I loved. I then entered in a half ironman in December, but ended up injuring my calf in August. This turned into a 3 month lay off, a lot of weight re-gained and I'm only now able to get back into regular training.

Family Status: Single

Current Training: 2012 has started well for me, I've been doing the most consistent training I have ever done. Jan/Fab and March have all been about 32-33 hours/month. My next goal is to increase this up over 40 hours/month.

2011 Races: Mangawhai Sprint tri, Kumara Sprint tri, Northern Crossing Duathlon.

Planned 2012 Races: The planned races is a fluid thing, It'll change as my fitness slowly comes back, and as funds/work allows. But at this stage the following are penciled in:

Jan 28 Round Taranaki Cycle Challenge  (150km)  Done

Feb 26 Mangawhai Sprint Tri Done

March 11 Peoples Tri, Olympic/sprint (Maretai)  Done

March 31, Kai iwi sprint Tri? Done

21 April, Northern Crossing Duathlon

June-October A yet to be determined Half Marathon

December Taupo HIM

Weight: Since loosing the weight, I've yo-yoed up and down between 220-240lbs. Currently I'm about 233lbs, a drop of 9 for the year. Hoping to get down to 190ish by the end of the year.

So, my 3rd tri of the year last weekend didn't go well, in fact it was by far the worst that I've done. I've got a race report up but the cliff notes version is I was absolutely exhausted going in to it (despite having my smallest volume training week for the year) and got more and more fatigued through the race resulting in what was by far and a way the worst run I've done that I can remember (That's any run, not just in a tri) The only positive was the swim, which I have definitely made some progress on this summer.

I've got my first A race of the year coming up on the 21st April (9km/84km/8km Duathlon) and this poor performance has got me worried about how to best prepare. Obviously what I did this weekend didn't work.

My new plan is to make this week a big one, with a huge bike volume over Easter weekend (2 long rides, 1 decent brick) and then do a week and a half long taper in the run up to race day. But I'm very open to suggestions. What do you guys think I should do?

FWIW, my logs are all up to date.

Thanks in advance.

Name:  Carrie639

Story:  After many years of ice hockey for many years and many trips to the surgical room I decided to hang up my skates about 7 years ago.  I still worked out but that was becoming bored with really no goal to works towards.  I talked to a trainer about doing something similar to a triathlon, but didn't want to run (always got shin splints).  She mentioned aquabikes and I signed up for my first race in 2009, an olympic aquabike.  That soon was not enough as I wanted to complete a triathlon.  I struggled in 2010 with the run and constant injuries, so did 2 half aquabikes.  I changed shoes, tossed the custom expensive orthodics and began running again in august 2010.  I did my first 1/2 mary November in 2010.

Kelly is currently training me.  We have really turned my training around to force more HR training (which I have never focused on).  I am looking forward to a transformation in 2012!  I am told we have alot of work to do on nutrition  and I have finally graduated to hills and speed work, God help me!

Family status:  Single with 2 chocolate labs (Bella and Briggs) and a cat named Tag

Current Training:  I am training hard core for running this year.  I thought about HIM's for this year and knew I really still need work on my running, so I am spending another year focused entirely on running.

2011 races:  Various HM's, Fox Valley Marathon (my 1st), 3 weeks later, Chicago Marathon and Disney's Goofy Challenge (HM on Saturday followed by a full mary on Sunday)

2012 races:  Illinois HM and Chicago Marathon are "A" races ... Wisconsin HM, Solider Field 10 Miler, Chicago Rock 'n Roll HM, Peapod HM, FV HM, Marine Corp Mary, Disney's Goofy Challenge (Jan 2013).

Weightloss:  I have lost about 45 lbs in the last few years and plan to work hard on an additional 30ish in 2012.  I think weight is one of my biggest limiters.

I have been on this thread for the past 18 months. This is a great group of athletes with all levels of ability and experiences in many different disciplines.  Mentor threads like this are great learning tools from training, nutrition, race strategy, potty training, etc   This is a fun group

When you run in training, do you usually do a 9:1 run:walk.  Do you have any idea as to your HR / Intensity when you're doing the running portion?

Hi Kelly,

Yes, I have been using a 9:1 run walk in training for runs 5km and over. Less than that and I just do a straight run. Although in the last week or so I've been trying to change to a 9:30 : 30 run:walk. The reason for the walk breaks is to give my calf a rest, I've been trying to be conservative after last years injury.

No heart rate data for my runs, I haven't yet felt up to a hard out 30 minute time trial, so I have no starting point. In Saturdays race, my run was all I felt I could manage. Usually I'm running within myself, harder than an easy pace but I finish knowing I could do more..

From your overall pace on you 9:1 intervals, it looks like you may be running "9" part at a fairly high intensity.  I'm wondering if the intensity is wearing you down. I would almost want to see you drop the "1" part and lower the overall intensity.

I think more of your running may need to be "easy" withe selected sessions of harder work.

Ok, that makes sense. What sort of pace's do you think I should be aiming for to keep things easy? I'll also be happier when the walk sections are gone, I only started them because my calf was getting tight during my longer runs.

Name: Fit4Infinity
(Mark) 52 and in the best shape of my life.

Story: In 2005 I faced a family crisis and came out of a dark place
motivated to save my life.  I lost over 150 hundred pounds and reconnected with deep need to be in motion.  Given the new found potential to do anything, I focused on becoming a triathlete.  This sport allows me to design a course of action, plan, prepare, execute the plan and after evaluating the plan begin again. Blending the mental, physical and spiritual.  I’m very technical and pattern oriented,  and enjoy training with HRM, Power, and T-Pace.  My weakest link is my passion and inexperience causes me to over drive, brake hard, accelerate to much, ending in the finish chute, a sweaty mess without any thing left in the tank.  I’m working on smoothing out the rough parts, but it might take forever to get it right.  My strongest natural discipline is the bike, but I equally enjoy the swim and the run.  Perhaps it is because I’m still seeing great improvements in my swim and run that I motivated to capture further rewards in the disciplines I have the least experience in.

Family Status: Married to my Best Friend for 21 years, with 3 labs.  They are competitive as well with MH, Intl CH and MACH titles.

Current
Training
: I am experimenting with a EN 8 week program.  With 32 weeks until my A race I am technically between plans.  I ride indoors or out 5 days a week, swim and run between 2 and 4 days a week.  My life style stacks 3 workouts a couple of days a week and long workouts on weekends.
I could benefit from some structure, but honestly enjoy workouts so much that I find it hard to take days off.  Training vs. Working out, yes I could benefit from others experiences.  As I get closer to the 20 week timeline for IMAZ I will address the question of separate SBR coach, local coach, online
coach, online plan vs coaches plan, ecetera.  This is another area where I can grow as a mentee.

2011 Races: Issaquah Sprint, Kirkland Sprint, Lake Meridian Oly, Bonney Lake Oly, Half Rev Portland. 4 Century Rides, 3 Half Mary’s, Pf Chang’s R-n-R Marathon in Az, and I volunteered at IMAZ.

Planned 2012 Races: Issy Sprint in June, Ramrod in July, Lake Meridian oly. in August, Black Diamond Long Course tri in Sept. peaking in November at IMAZ. (Likely to race more)

Weightloss: After losing 150 pounds and a lot of muscle, and gaining back around 40 mostly muscle (I hope Smile ).  I’d like to lose another 20.  I know it can be done without losing muscle, but I need to eat 5-6 times a day to fuel and recover from my workouts.  If I start skipping meals my training performance fails very quickly.  I’m considering going to a nutrient timed fueling system of measured calories on a time interval approach.  I feel really good at my weight but would race much better at a lighter weight.  Ramrod is a one day ultra-marathon cycling event of 152 miles with over 10,000 elevation gains.  I’ll never been built like a pro climber, but if there was ever motivation to be like one, this is a mountain of it.

I'd like to join in again! I love this group!

Name: DDVMM/Michele

Story: This is my second year in triathlon but I have been running and bike on and off for many years.

Family Status: Married to a wonderfully supportive man with 4 beautiful, active, and busy kids (12,11,8,3)

Current Training: Currently training for several sprints and my 'A' race is an olympic this year. I would like to train for a HIM either in 2013 or 2014. I have a plan I am sort of following from BT but I have been looking around for online coaches/plans - I feel lost at this point.

2011 Races: Several sprints and half marathons

Planned 2012 Races:  NJ State Olympic, Unite half marathon, Danskin sprint, Iron girl sprint

Weightloss:  I am always looking to lose that extra 5 pounds.

NO WAY, NO IMWI!!!

If I am going to do an IM it will be the easiest of the IM's ... the flattest.  I see no reason to torture myself with one of the hardest.  However, the IMWI course would be good bike training.

Morning, all!  Welcome to Scott, Maggie, and Mark.  I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Up at 4:15 for a 2600m swim.  I just couldn't find a rhythm with that swim band around my ankles.  Glad it's done for the day now.  I have some strength training to do later.

We have another house showing tonight, so I'll be scrambling to put everything together again.  It's right around dinner time, and the agent said no smelly crockpots during showings, so I have to pack a cooler full of leftover turkey burgers, raw veggies, and fruit.  Sigh.  I am a control freak, and I don't like feeling like things are falling apart all around me.  Positive news is that we've had 3 showings in the first week.  Now...someone needs to make an offer

3100 in the pool for masters swim this morning in just over an hour follow by 40 minutes and 4.07 mile run at 131 average heart rate recovery run. Getting up at 4:20 can suck but having it all done by 7:15 rules.
