bradword - 2012-10-29 9:34 AM I will share a personal story about myself. About a year ago my family had to go on assistance for 2 months. We got "food stamps". I was appalled and got off of them as soon as I could. We had about 2.5 times more money for food then we did when spending our own money. Welfare should be temporary and it should just be for the essentials of life. I should not be able to purchase a Prime Grade T-Bone or all name brand foods. I shouldn't be able to buy all junk food or lobster or whatever. I was blown away at how much money they threw at us. The welfare office almost begged my wife to also get cash assistance which would have been an extra $600 a month we could have pulled out of the ATM for anything we wanted. We turned it down. We got off if and haven't needed it since. We actually never used all they gave us and we still ate like kings for a little over a month. Crazy stuff.

Unfortunately Brad, I believe most WF recipients will take the other road and collect all they can.  Gald you pulled out of the difficult time.

Good job Brad. I think most people who go on assistance are like you and take less and get back to self-reliance as quickly as possible.

Interesting study on that:

To be fair I do not know much about the Urban Institute.  They say they are non partisan but then again so does everyone else.

Interesting report.  It looks like it was from 1996 which is right around the time of the Clinton reforms which I think set limits on the amt of time people can spend on welfare.  It'd be interesting to see that report updated for today to see if the reforms worked or not.

I agree it would be interesting to see how things have evolved.

japarker24 - 2012-10-29 6:16 AM Waste in government is one of the biggest issues facing this country.

I think we should set up a new Federal Department to oversee wasteful spending. That should help.

I work for the state administrative office of one of those programs listed. Do I see waste at the state and local level, definitely. I think admin could be cut by at least 1/3, but no programs want to lose their FTE slots. Another issue for a lot of these programs is that they are administered by the state, which means state employees with state benefits.

Our program also serves up to 185% FPL.

While you did not say $60K goes to each household in money, that is how it will be taken.

A lot of those programs do not give direct financial benefits. So do, but a lot of not. We also know some of those programs do not go to those under the poverty line. some programs give to those close to it. Heck there is the food program for Puerto Rico. So the money is spread over more than just households under the poverty line.

With medical assistance being such a large part, it is not hard to believe it is a big number. It's easy to say those on welfare get $60K and what a joke, but children under poverty getting medical care is not so unreasonable. Then we have admin costs to all those programs....

I realize the point is to actually see how much aid they are getting as a whole and ask if it is necessary. Perhaps not. I would be curious for the same study to see how much Federal aid the middle class gets. Not that is would make this OK, just for curiosity. Tax breaks, educational aid... ect. Just curious if the middle class is getting much more than it thinks it is.

With how many are on food stamps now, no I think I'm the exception unfortunately. Also, my point seems to be missed. We had more than 2.5x of money we needed to feed our family. There were almost no restrictions and they tried to give more money without us asking. That is idiotic at best.

How does the number of people on food stamps make you the exception?
