WBC is really nothing more than a family of lawyers that have formed a business practice of holding incendiary protests in hopes that some entity will violate WBC's rights attempting prevent them from their despicable acts. They then file suit against the town/state/individual for damages. They make money from people reacting to their hate.

They "protested" a funeral for a fallen soldier at my church last year. The Patriot Guard presence was impressive and well organized and would have been more than enough to keep WBC at bay. WBC's effort on the other hand was one beat up mini van full of protesters with poorly made signs. They stood in a park about a half mile away from the church for about 3 minutes to get on the evening news, got in their van and drove away.

Proof?  A link?

I mean, they're totally insane and off the edge with the soldier funeral protesting (I'm a member of the Patriot Guard).  But the murdered children in Newton?!  No.  Can't be!  That's...  yes, I'll use the word...  INHUMAN!

There was an incident in one of the Southern states where these "people" showed up to protest at a marines funeral.  The people in the town found out the hotel where the church members where staying and they used cars to block in the church members vehicles at the hotel parking lot.

When the church members called the police to have the illegally parked cars towed...Oh well all the wreckers in the town were busy that day.  A wrecker was finally available after the funeral.

Hopefully, the press won't give them any ink or air time, that's all they want.  If the press ignores them they will slink back under the cabinet with the rest of the roaches.

I didn't realize that until I was looking at the "hacked information release" I think there was only one non family member part of this "church"

Actually, they're just a scam.

Rather than try to put it into my own words, here is a copy/paste of something written on a site that I own:

Westboro Baptist Church is a scam. They are mostly comprised of the family of their founder, and a large percentage of them are lawyers. http://www.npr.org/2011/03/02/134198937/a-peek-inside-the-westboro-baptist-church  They make money through a large family law practice, and by the donations of the lunatic fringe their "cause" appeals to. They also make money by suing any municipalities that might abrogate their 1st Amendment rights by blocking their protests, and by suing any individual that assaults their members personally. It is why they choose such emotionally charged funerals to stage their "protests". They are slip-and-fall lawyers; ambulance chasers - the type of attorneys that give the profession a bad name. They are Christians in the same way James Jones and his cult was - in name only.

Whether or not they actually believe the tripe they spew, make no mistake, they are simply trying to bait people into doing something stupid.

Yeah.  I see it now:  http://www.examiner.com/article/public-responds-to-westboro-baptist-church-s-plan-to-picket-sandy-hook-funerals

Interesting how they've even pizzed off 'Anonymous' and the hacker group has them targeted for complete destruction.

If I were closer, I would join in to keep those WBC nut-jobs at least 5 miles away from the funerals...  with a tazer and a steel pipe!

I get that they want publicity, I get that they want people to do stupid things because they are outraged, I get that it's a scam.

That said, I still think you should do whatever public notice to get word to people to show-up and support victims or troops families when these clowns come to town.  Don't just ignore them.

If it was your loved-one's funeral that people decided "we're just going to ignore them", that would suck pretty bad.  The supporters need to outweigh the Westboro crowd at every event.  I agree that the media shouldn't report it, but they always will.  So we're locked in this cycle.
