Without a doubt.  I took a lot of flack when I had a Boxster and that's a long way from a beetle cab.

Good thing I am a chick. I kind of want a 90's one like this

Except the whole Seattle/Rain thing. Maybe I'll just put drain holes in the floorboards and wear my rain jacket.

My opinion is anything classic or truly retro is pretty cool including this car.  I like.  What I don't like is the forced retro new stuff that people get all funky with.  Just my opinion though and each is entitled to find happiness in whatever.

Where does the rain jacket fit into this? Alright by you?

Are you asking about the practicality of this given our weather?  If so, it is not as bad as some might think.  A lot depends on if you have a garage.  Visibility can kind of suck with the top up.  A lot of these tops don't seal real well so condensation on the windshield/windows can be an issue especially since some of these cars don't have great blowers to keep the glass clear.  Bottom line is they make a great, fun second car, maybe along with an SUV for the darker days, but like OWS season, top down driving is pretty seasonal.

Two questions:

1) Do you know a good mechanic?

2) What's the rain jacket look like?

Why do I find these conversations so late in the game? When did the 80's and 90's become old? I've got questions...

Nah, but eating squirrel might

Only if you're spitting shot onto the plate while you're eating it.  You can never get it all out while you're cleaning them.

And driving an F-150 makes you someone who needs to upgrade to a Dodge with a Cummins.  but I'm biased.

Cummins pays the bills.   You can also buy a Titan, if you want. :^)

.22 only if they're on the ground.   If I shot a rifle into the air the ghost of my grandfather would arise and haunt me.

Ahh ha...knew you had mad car skillz, but didn't know the Cummins part. I drove a Titan and loved it, but I didn't know they made a diesel. The gas version gets 11mpg and has horrible reviews. The sound system is excellent though

Well that will certainly shake things up a bit.

So you know diesel engines.  Question: why isn't anyone making a hybrid diesel?

Cost.  By the time you add the necessary aftertreatment (catalyst, diesel particulate filer, NOx adsorber or SCR) and THEN the cost of a hybrid drivetrain... you're adding several thousand dollars to the initial cost of the vehicle.   Then, because the engine is a smaller displacement, you lose a LOT of fuel-economy in trying to meet emissions requirements.

And honestly, hybrid technology is a "marketing feature" and not a very effective technology feature.  Nearly every one of those vehicles will get BETTER fuel economy with a small fuel-efficient diesel in real-world driving.

Sadly, the majority of people still view diesel as smoky, slow, and polluting... so hybrids are easier to sell than diesels.

OK, that's interesting.  I didn't know about the fuel economy v emissions requirements.

Our other vehicle is a Sprinter, CRD.  We run biodiesel in it when we can.  We have always thought it would be cool to have a hybrid biodiesel because then we could, theoretically, have fuel independence.

Volkswagen has one in the works. Last I heard it was up to 78 mpg, and that's in a production Passat, no fancy aero concept exterior going on or anything that couldn't actually be made for mass production.  they do have a concept car that has gone up to 261 mpg thjough.

Let's go ahead and bring this thread full-circle!

The new Beetle (new New Beetle?) is available as a TDI Convertible, which is nice because the old New Beetle was not.

I really like the styling of the new New Beetle, much better than the old New Beetle.

When they talk of "Joyride from point A to point B"  I couldn't help but think of this I saw today.  I know it's a little off topic but the sound of this makes me shiver and I had to share.

So you know diesel engines.  Question: why isn't anyone making a hybrid diesel?

Volkswagen has one in the works. Last I heard it was up to 78 mpg, and that's in a production Passat, no fancy aero concept exterior going on or anything that couldn't actually be made for mass production.  they do have a concept car that has gone up to 261 mpg thjough.

Really?!  Do they have a release date on that yet? The sedan or the wagon?

They set a record with a diesel.   It's not like it's EPA-rated at 78mpg.

They do have a concept for a diesel hybrid.  I think he's conflating the two stories, but I could be wrong.

Without industry-leading aero improvements and all carbon fiber construction, you're not getting a standard Passat into the 78mpg EPA-rated range, regardless of fuel.

Good Gravy.   I want to add that soundtrack to my running mix.   For reals.  I literally got goose-bumps.

I just ran it through my home stereo.  I think I now have to go out and have a cigarette after that.

lol... I wonder what driving an F150 makes me.

Redneck? Smile

Nah, but eating squirrel might;)

Only if you're spitting shot onto the plate while you're eating it.  You can never get it all out while you're cleaning them.

And driving an F-150 makes you someone who needs to upgrade to a Dodge with a Cummins.  but I'm biased.

My next vehicle will be a diesel, fo sho. Why the bias? Shot? For goodness sake, use a .22;)

The sound system is excellent though ;)

You can't actually buy it ...yet.

Well that will certainly shake things up a bit.

OK.  It will be interesting to see what they do with this concept.  These articles made me think of three things:

1) Blue is the new green?  Ugh, I'm so over the one upmanship color thing already.

2)  If they make a diesel hybrid they have to put it in their wagon.  It looks like they are designing this technology so it would work on lots of the platforms,  but the current main market for a diesel hybrid drives wagons.

3) Touareg has always seemed like an odd choice for an SUV name.
