I just wish it would stop being such an all-important bully. And I realize that the US government isn't behind this. I never said that it was. American television is. But it's about how the world perceives it. In all sincereity, it doesn't seem like it. It might seem like it, but it's not. I just don't like the road we're on right now. I'm passionate about it because I'd like to see it change. Think about it. 230 years ago, if you hated the state of the nation and wanted to see it change for the better, you were considered a patriot. Why now are people like me considered traitors? And for the record, the post it titled "As if the world doesn't hate the US enough as it is.", Not "As if Jim doesn't hate the US enough." My point in this post is that the world, by and large, sees America as a big bully that struts its stuff and imposes its will on the rest of the world as it sees fit. Damn the consequences. My only wish is the we behaved ourselves a bit better. Again, I realize this is an IOC decision based on the will of an American company, but the point is the world will perceive it as America pushing its weight around once again. |

Yes, Jim, it's a stupid ruling. Swim finals are evening events. NBC blows. |

Runner | Subject: RE: As if the world doesn't hate the US enough as it is. Well, the world viewed every world leader as being a bully. Roman empire, France, Britain. They've all had turns at being considered the world's big bully. Right now, we're at the top of the pyramid, so we generally are considered to be the bully. I understand your passion, Jim, I really do. However, and I speak only for myself here and no one else, when you make inflammatory statements like that, you automatically put people on the defensive. It cuts down on good dialogue. Especially when the issue has almost nothing to do with the country as a whole. I don't recall the American people petitioning NBC to have the time changed. NBC did this on their own. Yet you make it seem (to a mostly American crowd) that the American people are the bad guys here. If this issue bothers you that much, do something about it. Otherwise, it ends up being just another rant about how horrible we are. |

Again, I realize this is an IOC decision based on the will of an American company, but the point is the world will perceive it as America pushing its weight around once again. The world tends to forget all the things that America brings to the world too. Where was the rest of the world when we went throught Hurricane Katrina, Sept 11, etc. Did we get any economic aid from other countries at the same level we dish out millions/billions of dollars for other tragedy around the world. What other wars and chaos might be going on if not for the balance of a super power and its existance does to keep peace. How many technological and industrial advances has the US brought to the world as a result of inginuity/generosity. What about what we have brought to the world with entertainers like Michael Jackson, no, Brittny Spears, well, Jerry Lewis, Baywatch - OK so we do have some things to appologize for but the fact remains, stop feeling bad that this is the greatest country the world has even had. These swimmers that need to alter their schedules have plenty of time to adapt and when they become big starts in front of a big audience and make big cash, I think they'll get over it. |

Otherwise, it ends up being just another rant about how horrible we are. Over at swiminfo.com, they've had this as a hot-button issue for months. They had a "call to action" to their readers to petition the IOC not to change the schedule. So I sent letters to both the IOC and NBC. But ya know, dollars talk. |

But if I had titled it "Beijing Swimming Finals to be Held in the Morning", either no one would have read the thread, or they would have just said "eh" and moved on. This may be true, but you've managed to get at least one person who didn't care before, to now say, "Good for NBC". Besides, it seems the general sentiment here is still "eh", or even more strongly for going with the decision. |

Scout7 - 2006-10-26 3:17 PM Besides, it seems the general sentiment here is still "eh", or even more strongly for going with the decision. Well, obviously the decision is going to be popular with American sports fans who aren't swimming purists, because they get to see MIchael Phelps live in the evening. But it'll will be interesting to see what the non-American and European/Asian BTers, as well as the swimming afficianados think. The main reason I think the decision stinks is it adulterizes the sport. I made the point ealier about a hypothetical decision to shorten IM Hawaii to two hours so that it would neatly fit into a broadcast. This decision isn't much different than that. |

See...that's another thing. Not only are they sacrificing what's best for the athletes, they're doing it in the name of sh!tty coverage. |
