I get these types of comments all the time, and it drives me CRAZY!

I've kind of always viewed food as fuel, so I'd always think, "If I put junk in my body, my performance will show." It doesn't help that my A race is always a few days after my birthday, and every year my mom would say, "You mean you can't even have ONE piece of cake for your own birthday? You CAN'T even have ONE?" (Uh...I don't even like cake...why is this such a tragedy?)

Now I'm finding out that my system is hyper-reactive to SO many different types of foods (sensitivities and allergies), which explain all the strange symptoms I had in the past. This, of course, makes these annoying comments even more annoying.

"You mean you won't cheat on your diet just a little?"

"Uh...no..."

"Not even for a pizza?"

"Uh...no... There's white flour in the pizza crust. White flour gives me asthmatic reactions. Why would I want to do that?"

"But it's pizza. Everybody likes pizza."

Honestly, if it's a choice between pizza and breathing, I'll take breathing. Some people just don't get it.

My husband thinks pizza is gross.  He is asian, so white wheat flour, sour tomato sauce and cheese are about the worst things to eat for him......    I agree in my head, I know the results in my digestive tract, but they are yummy to MY taste buds.....

My husband is pretty good about keeping junky snacks to himself - he has a place he hide his snacks until I go to work or to bed.

Work is getting worse.   we often have team building lunches, etc, and the person who is in charge of ordering is now 8 months pregnant, with no control......  our company summer picnic had absolutely no veggies to speak of unless yoou count corn on the cob which 1. is a grain and 2.  I have braces and can't eat!   I ate before I went, so I would not be sucked in by potato salad.  I don;'t even LIKE mayo based foods....

In 2004 I made it to the "metabolism of a teenager" mode - I hope I get there again........

I've pretty much given up on trying to get my wife to not bring home tons of junk food from the store.  Any mention of it, and it's an instantaneous argument -- one that we've had probably a dozen times at least.  Any ideas on how to adjust the food shopping habits of one's spouse if normal conversation about it is futile (or worse)?  Tell her that she's getting fat?

I get this from my mom.  It's actually pretty humorous because one day she'll be trying to get me to eat ice cream with her and then the next she'll be telling me how fat I am and how I really need to lose some weight.  Gee thanks mom.  Apparently she still hasn't realized that just because she can "cheat" and eat a huge bowl of ice cream w/out gaining any weight, it doesn't work that way for me.  That said, I do eat ice cream and other goodies now and then.  That's the only way I could be successful with weight loss.  If I try to ban the yummy stuff that just makes me crave it more and get frustrated.  I just don't keep it at home since I have no will power, so I save it for special occaisons when I'm out to eat.  And thankfully my mom lives 2 states away so I only have to deal with her stuff once a year or so when I'm visiting.

It's funny how people are about food, isn't it?

Is there some kind of human drive that simply wants everyone to be like us? And does that extend to eating like us? Maybe we like to think we are making the best choices, so to support that, deep down inside we want everyone to do what we do?

Anyway -- This doesn't stop with just food in the eternal struggle between partners. One loves to work out vs. one loves to stand in a river and fish. One gets on a healthy eating roll and the other brings home candy and ice cream in the same week.

In my 16-year-relationship opinion -- you have to share some flexibility. My partner will occasionally go for a bike ride or swim with me. I will occasionally even stand in a river. He keeps the sweets to a minimum (because he knows it's like crack to me); and I only occasionally leave the cupboards bare of anything he would consider edible.

Unfortunately I think I share the same sort of food induced illnesses you do, (allergies, asthma, reflux, etc) hence I have to watch very careful why I eat and I have to be very picky by necessity not by choice. But many people interpret it different and think I am a healthy eater freak! But I rather feel good and be able to exercise than stressing over a piece of pizza or a cone of ice cream. skipping on junk/conmfort food is not a sacrifice at all…

Did you know that Breyer's makes a kick-butt lactose free vanilla ice cream? Oh wait, maybe I shouldn't admit that I know that.

Luckily I can eat pretty much anything I want and not gain weight while I train, but to the OP I really think this is your wife not being supportive and trying you to be lazy.  I don't know you wife but my friends will give me crap when we are out and I don't get drunk because I have to wake up early to train.  It is not that I have stopped drinking I just have to watch the days I do it.   I think that most people get jealous by our lifestyle and try to bring us back to their "pit of unhealthiness".

I've tried to explain to my wife a thousand times that my will power is at the grocery store...i can walk right past the chips...(luckily my sweet tooth is non-existant so ice-cream and desserts have no hold over me..) but if she brings them into the house....i WILL eat them...it really sucks...

She can't relate (she has will power) so she keeps on buying that crap - the whole "why should we all suffer because of you" argument....

I've come to the conclusion that if i'm going to eat that stuff i'll only do it after a long run or ride...makes me feel a little better...

Yes, PLEASE!!! I have willpower, but my hubby doesn't, so I stopped buying ice cream and junk food because of him. So, now he buys pringles and oreos. It's all so frustrating.

Breyers has a new fat free ice cream pretty good. I've lost 35 pounds since thanksgiving due to a bowflex and elliptical machine in my bedroom and the recent addiction to triathlons. What i've been getting from parents and in laws is you look too skinny. 5'11" 182. my wifes a doctor if I was doing it the wrong way she'd let me know. When are they going to figure out that this is what I'm suppose to look like. Besides that I eat more than them I just eat right.

The doctor i work for suggested that i try making ice cream out of my vanilla protein shake mix and a banana...the man is a GENIUS!!!!!

Mix up your protein shake the way they intended it, puree a banana, and freeze...make sure you stir it every 1/2 hour until it has the consistency of ice cream, otherwise, it will be a big frozen brick. (it's a pain, but when you've got no other option, you go for it.)

I haven't had ice cream in over a year, so i don't really remember what it tastes like, but this stuff was as close as i needed it to be!

Yes, my doctor/boss is a genius...(and a great friend, too!) He brought the whole family over to my place last night (we're all really close), "kidnapped" me and confined me to my room (over the watchful eye of his 11-year-old daughter), decorated my condo, and upon releasing me, threw me a surprise birthday party with ALL-NATURAL FOOD!

We had baked chicken with a red raspberry/honey sauce (no sugar...just raspberries and honey)...a big ol' salad...and for dessert, a fruit pizza with a spelt flour crust and maltitol-sweetened "icing". Beverages? Virgin strawberry daquiris sweetened with xylitol. It was WONDERFUL!!!

He also made me a big batch of spelt flour pancakes (for freezing) since i'm allergic to ANY type of flour other than spelt and millet. That's my carbo-loading for my race on Sunday!

(They bought me a running shirt and an iTunes gift card as gifts...I love them!!!)

Did I ever mention how much I love my job?
