Online or Offline | Subject: RE: Anyone prior (or current) military out there? LOL Coast Guard is military??? KIDDING Don't you guys forget about your spouses either, if you're in, your wife/hub and family is in also. I've absolutely admired my mom for sticking out over 20 years of Navy enlistment with my dad. Within a few years of moving to the states, my father moved us to Europe. English was a second language to her, and then she moved to Italy where she didn't speak the language with two young children. She worked swing shift at the hospital, then on top of that, her husband's ship seemed like it was always underway! Navy Wife. I'm told it's the toughest job in the military. OTOH, as a young woman in her 20's I had the distinct honor of being an AF Officer's Wife. THAT was the $hittie$t job in the military. Good thing I opted out VETERANS DAY IS NOV. 11th!!! |

Elite 3498 Chicago | Subject: RE: Anyone prior (or current) military out there? Navy Wife. I'm told it's the toughest job in the military. that's a fact. I lived in Guam right off Anderson AFB and to see those military spouses kinda hang out with nothin' to do as they were doing before they met their spouse, since they were in Guam, was kinda heart breaking. My co-worker's sister is married to an Apache pilot and he's always doing "manuvers" and what is she to do since they move around so much and stuff? well she has 2 masters degrees and a ph.D. . . . an eternal student. regardless, i love the military because it's voluntary and those guys in there really have it tough...I know first hand... a good friend of mine I met in Airborne school back in 1990 is still in the Navy with the Teams. He said that after his 1st "tour" it was just a job like any other. After about 3 years, he had to get both of his shoulders reconstructed and was on admin duty because he couldn't pass his physical and wasn't deemed "operational" So he was in freggin' limbo for 2 years. Imagine, being in the Teams and really wanting to be training and hangin' with the best but being stuck behind a desk. He said, yeah he was a SEAL but he was broke, behind a desk, and no real way he knew to make a living if he ever got out. The bright side of the story was that about 3 months later he got to go to BUD/S instructor school and now he's been an instructor at BUD/S for a few years now. He's even a big movie star now as seen on FIT tv and the Discovery channel with BUD/S class 234. LOL |

Those women are absolutely amazing! Seeing the strength of those women as we go out to sea for 6+ months....what can you say? Don't know if I could do it if it was turned the other way around. Believe me, I know. That is why I am now divorced. My wife could not deal with it...and you know, I couldn't really blame her either. But I see other women that do it everyday. They are the ones that should be recognized!!!! They are the ones that allow us to do the job that we love to do. They are the true heroes! Edited by Cavu9 2004-11-08 11:10 AM |

Its so inspirational to me watching guys push themselves to their limit. Having the physical toughness but mostly the mental strength to stick with it, knowing that they can ring out and end the physical pain at any time. This is an awesome thread. Thanks to everyone of you! |

Like I keep telling my wife...half as much money...twice as much husband!!! |

Master 1914 Finally north of the Mason-Dixon Line | Subject: RE: Anyone prior (or current) military out there? My husband was an Army combat engineer officer for 5 years stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. I married him at the start of those 5 years and for more then half of those years he was deployed out in the field or to the National Training Center in the California desert, or Iraq. Military life for the wives is exceptionally demanding especially in this time of war and uncertainty. God Bless those wives who are serving with their husband and may all our troops remain safe and return home to thier families. |

Hes an MP and has been been stationed pretty much everywhere, our best duty being in Italy, our worst Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. Right now we are in Fort Polk, Louisiana. He got back from OIF 1 in March and I'm sure he'll be back in the Sandbox before too long again. Lolo |

Extreme Veteran 463 | Subject: RE: Anyone prior (or current) military out there? Double posting to provide a little trivia. There are 7 Uniformed Services in the US: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, NOAA and the Public Health Service. The Military Services are the first 4 with the CG falling under the Navy in time of war. Can you tell I used to work entitlement programs? Yep, we'd pull our hair out when new legislation would mistakenly read Military Service vs Uniformed Service. Now back to your regularly scheduled program..... |

Pro 5153 Helena, MT | Subject: RE: Anyone prior (or current) military out there? NOAA? as in Nat'l Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?! So then, what makes one a "uniformed service" vs. anything else? Do NOAA folks have to wear uniforms to the office all the time or something (I have a friend who worked for them and he never mentioned it, but I never saw him going to or coming from work)? |

I guess this post was meant to ask for "military" as opposed to "uniformed" services. Coast Guard and Marines are included as they are part of the Navy. And I LOVE trivia....too bad I can never remember it later for timely recall into a conversation. Edited by Steve- 2004-11-15 2:54 PM |
