I used to wear New Balance 767 (I started with these back when they were the 737). However, I wasn't satisifed with the quality of the last few pairs of NB shoes that I got. I'm really happy with the Brooks. I thought they would be old man shoes but not so much. Edited by jonathan22 2007-12-12 7:04 AM |

Today I wore my strappy Manolo's but tomorrow I might be in the mood for more of a boot, perhaps my black Aldos Seriously though, I wear the "Nike air structure traix+10" -I'm reading that straight off my shoe, this is the only shoe that I've found where I can run and my knees don't hurt. They are about 100 miles old. |

I'd say those Manolo's probably are good for 25 miles before they need replacement. |

Hmmm, strappy Manolo's...sounds like a pair of FMPs to me ("f___ me" pumps, if I may be so crude). Ahh for the days the old feet could suffer the heels. (You'll be old one day, too, girl, so no laughin'!) Asics Gel Cumulus for me, too. Gotta love 'em. Anything that can make the knees on this Athena not mind the pounding is worth it. Jonathan, you asked which specialty I'm in...I'm a hospitalist (i.e. inpatient internal medicine doc). I work nights and the turn around kills me (but my hubby is an ICU RN on nights, and we've not been married long enough to want to work opposite shifts...) Crap, y'all have some serious workouts goin' on...I'm in my "OFF" season, and truly EARNING the slacker title for this group! RAH! |

As a side note, my mom has been an RN her whole adult life. My dad was a hospital corpsman in the Navy. One of my older sisters is an RN. I was pre-med in college and worked in a hospital for 4 years. I feel your pain on working nights. I worked nights in a IT department just out of college. To this day, the year 1994 is a blank. |

Master 1675 Suwanee, Ga. | Subject: RE: Jonathan22's group - CLOSED like your parents door during happy time. I am in an Asic GT2125 ( I believe is the number)...with about 100 miles on them. I usually get about 350+/- since I am about 240 lbs. I am also trying to break my habit of being a heal-striker which I know will add to my running efficiency and shoe life. I have used mostly Asics all the way back to the Asic GT 1000...and that is a long time ago. I have tried other shoes but always keep coming back to the Asic. I tried Brooks (about 15 years ago) and I could not get them to last more than about 150 miles before they started falling apart...I understand that is not an issue with them now. Steve |

Steve I think the Asics GT2125 is THE most popular running shoe, if I remember correctly. At least that is what Runner's World says. So having those as your favs is not a bad thing at all. Regarding heal-striking, one way to work through that is to work on shortening your stride and picking up your turnover. Guess when sport in SBR helps the most with that? Yup, cycling. One workout I like to do that helps with this is a 30 minute spin where I get my cadence well above 110. Also, this year I'm running at least 15' after every bike. I'm finding this is starting to ingrain a shorter stride in my running and higher turnover. |

Member 125 Kansas City | Subject: RE: Jonathan22's group - CLOSED like your parents door during happy time. I have some questions for those that are more experienced: 1. I have to get a heart rate monitor to help with my endurance training. Does anyone know of some good articles about heart rate training? Any advice on what type of heart rate monitor to buy? I need to figure out my zones and stuff. 2. Any tips on getting a good deal on some last season bikes? My bike sucks (heavy and doesn't really fit) and I have been saving up for a new one. hopefully I will get a little christmas money and be able to pull it off. I need all the help I can get! |

Master 1675 Suwanee, Ga. | Subject: RE: Jonathan22's group - CLOSED like your parents door during happy time. These are two areas of interest to me as well. I have read some on using a monitor but am more confused now than before. Most folks on here use Garmon (sp?) I believe. And as to the bike question...I have decided to continue to educate myself and ride my current road tank...I mean BIKE through next season and buy a bike this time next year. I do know that this is the time to get good deals on the 07 close outs etc. Good luck with your training and I look forward to the responses to your questions. Steve |

Extreme Veteran 310 Colorado Springs | Subject: RE: Jonathan22's group - CLOSED like your parents door during happy time. Hey Guys & Gals, thanks for the well wishes. I'll be back in my routine before you know it. Since I've had a few days of rest, I have been thinking about my race schedule. I am considering a change. Originally I was planning on an OLY in Jul and a HIM in Aug, however, I am thinking of scratching both races and including a few more sprints. I would add an OLY in Aug/Sep timeframe, but since this will only be my 2nd season I am thinking of holding off on the HIM for at least one more year. My main reason is that when I move up, I want to feel comfortable with the Swim and Bike portions. I have been slacking in the pool, and am still just getting accostomed to riding, and I'm not very fast. Oh, and one benefit to this is I would have the opportunity to race the same sprint course twice in a month timeframe, and I wouln't have to travel. I would be able to train straight through the first, and use it as a practice for the second...What do you think? I'm thinking I would be better served in the long run to wait for the longer race at least one more year. Thanks all, YOU GUYS ROCK Edited by AF_SGT 2007-12-14 11:03 PM |

Master 2125 | Subject: RE: Jonathan22's group - CLOSED like your parents door during happy time. Erika, those are great questions. First lets cover devices: THE device to get is the Garmin Forerunner 305. It was made for triathletes. It does HR monitoring, speed, distance, etc. It tracks zones for both running AND cycling. You can mount it to your bike and get the bike cadence kit (which is what I've done). The few drawbacks is that you shouldn't swim with it (it can get wet but it is not supposed to be surmerged in water for any length of time). Second, is that you have to remember to recharge it before working out (it's not a watch like an Timex). Both are minor nits in my book. Last year I started with a Nike HR monitor and then switched to a Polar RS200 with footpod. The Polas is a good HR watch, but for the cost, the Garmin is the way to go. Costco has them on sale right now for $179. Amazon has them on sale for $199 (Amazon has a great review on their website). http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Forerunner-Wrist-Mounted-Fitness-Computer/dp/B000CSWCQA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197740327&sr=8-1 You could also buy the Garmin Cadence sensor (that's what I did) and you have one device for both running and biking. BTW, my wife has a Garmin Forerunner 305 with Cadence sensor also. As does my neighbor, as does more than a few folks in my tri club, as does just about every athlete my coach coaches. Now, regarding finding your zones: Here is a great article on what the 5 HR zones: http://www.d3multisport.com/articles/beinginthezone.html Here is a great article on testing protocol: http://www.d3multisport.com/articles/220.htm Once you know your LT for running and biking, use this to calculate your zones: http://www.d3multisport.com/articles/Calculating_HR_Zones.xls (D3 has some great articles in general: http://www.d3multisport.com/articles.php - read them when you get a chance). A few tips:
Finally, one last note on HR training. It's THE way to go. However, you need to feel comfortable with training and racing without it. I saw more than a few people at IMFL this past year who's HR monitor went out on them during the swim. They were then SOL for the bike and run since they hadn't trained at all to just listen to their bodies. A case in point: Natascha Badmann, 6 time Kona winner doesn't use a bike computer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD1homja40U I don't know if she uses HR monitor or not, but I think that says alot. |

My bike sucks (heavy and doesn't really fit) and I have been saving up for a new one. hopefully I will get a little christmas money and be able to pull it off. I need all the help I can get! I bought my mountain bike and road bike this time last year. I bought my tri bike in Feb. Now is a great time to get a good deal on last years closeout. You just have to start shopping your local bike stores. Be patient. THE most important thing is making sure your bike fits you. It doesn't do any good to get a great deal if it's the wrong bike fit. My wife just got fit on her bike. It makes a huge difference. Post what bikes you are looking at. Are you looking for a road bike or tri bike? What is your price range? What bikes have you looked at so far? I think that's what is great about the sport, so many options. You absolutly can do a HIM in 08 (but only you can decide if you are ready). I would schedule a late season HIM if you want do one. Maybe one in Sept. That gives you plenty of time to train. You can do it. One thing I told my wife when she started training for the marathon is "People overestimate what they can do in 12 weeks and underestimate what they can do in 12 months". Should you choose to wait, the HIM will be there waiting for you.
