Subject: RE: Birkierunner's group - ROUND 2 - The international group - OPEN
If your still accepting people, I'd like to join. I'm 35 years old and I serve in the US Air Force. I used to play soccer competitively through college up until about 5 years ago. My body couldn't take the impacts that a goalie takes. I didn't do much for about 3 years, and my waist line tells the story. I currently weigh 235 pounds, and looking to drop down to 185 by mid-July. I'm married with 2 kids and a dog. Last year was my first year for du's and tri's. I did 2 du's, 3 tri's and 2 tours. I'm currently signed up for the Texas Motor Speedway duathlon in february in Fort Worth, and also plan on doing an Oly in Vegas in April. I may just do the sprint, I need to check out the terrain first. I live in Oklahoma City and will be moving to New Mexico late in the summer. I think that's about it. If you have room, I'd love to join!

Thanks!
Thomas

Todd and Thomas, you're both in.  WELCOME.  I think 8 is a good number....hey, wasn't there a TV show called "Eight is Enough"??....so I'll close the group.  This is going to be great.  Happy New Year's Eve to everyone.

Hmmmm....Thomas (scubaman1) I see you are also a member of another mentor group (TriOK)...is that intentional?

Hi Jim:

I'm familiar with what a mentor is but exactly how will this work? Do we ask you questions or are you going to give us instructions or a task?

You can definitely start asking questions anytime.  I'm going to review people's 2008 goals they posted above and then maybe make some general comments on those.  I'll probably also give some tips on reading resources that I would highly recommend people read.  Again, the mentor program is not a coaching program, but I can hopefully give you the benefit of my 30 years of experience in endurance sports.  This should be FUN!!

Happy New Year all! We got dumped with snow last night here in the Chicago area. It'll make for a fun run later today.

Jim - How long have you been training w/ the Ergomo? What resources and methods are you using to get the most out of it? What software are you using? I know the basics as I've used a Computrainer sparingly this year, but there's a lot that I need to learn on training with a PM.

tvwatters - how was your race?

tripletmom01 - congrats on taking the IM journey. How exciting! '07 was my first year getting a taste of long distance (half's). It certainly made me appreciate and respect the distance. I can't imagine going the full 140.6.

CoachH - I ordered the book "Training and Racing with a Power Meter", can't wait. How's your book?

I got my Ergomo a few weeks before IM WI 2006.  I installed it on my roadbike, which is the only bike I had at the time.  I used the PM to determine my functional threshold power (FTP) and used the FTP value to set up different wattage thresholds I followed during the IM race.  Basically, you set a wattage range for the first part of race, short  hills, long hills, etc.  That strategy is theoretically supposed to set up a good run by not blowing yourself up on the bike.

Frankly, I haven't used the PM to it's full potential. I got a new bike last summer (Felt DA) and I couldn't switch the PM to it because of the different type of crank arms on my Felt versus the old Trek.  I'm trying to track down some DuraAce cranks that have an Octalink composition so that it will accept the Ergomo.  I train indoors on a Tacx Flow trainer, which gives wattage readings, so I have used that primarily in my workouts designed by a coach I used last year.  I want to get more involved in PM training this coming season and have the book you mentioned. The Ergomo comes with software called ErgoRacer, which is essentially a re-badged version of Cyclingpeaks software.

That's exactly what I'm hoping to gain by having a PM during a race. I had a great ride at Racine this past year, but I wonder if I burned any of those 'matchsticks' in the process. I started the run feeling really good, but I had a rough 8 mi patch in the middle. I didn't drink enough on the bike, but I'm not sure if my bad run was caused by dehydration alone. There are so many pieces to this puzzle that keeps it interesting and challenging

The New Year's Day Dash (5 miles) was a well organized but extraordinarily cold run. I'm used to running outside during the winter, but the near-zero wind chill made it a bit more challenging. My target for 5 mile races is around 8:00/mi, but the snow/ice on the trails, as well as a stiff wind, made that a bit of a challenge. Overall, I'm pleased with an 8:16 pace for the race today, but know I have a bit more to give in better conditions. This is coming from a guy who could not break the 10:00 barrier for a 1 mile run just 2 short years ago.

tripletmom01 - 2008-01-01 8:38 PM \Im thinking I might try to get me sponsered- have you ever been sponsered or tried to be??  What things would you include in your "resume"???

Haven't seriously pursued the sponorship thing. Someone asked me at the IM WI dinner last year why I didn't pursue sponsorship.  I said I didn't think it was worth the hassle.  Yeah, you might get some discounted or free stuff, but often you have to race certain races or certain number of races, serve a certain amount of time at a sponsor display booth, and/or wear a crappy looking race uniform.  I don't want to be bothered with any of that.  But, that's just me, so don't want to discourage you from doing it.

I don't know much about how many opportunities are out there nationally (there are always local sponsors you can pursue).  I have heard of Team GU, Javelin, and RaceAthlete.  I thought I saw a book somewhere on this and looked on amazon.com and came up with this book.

If it were me, my resume would include brief history of how I got into triathlon, any experience with community service, my race results - highlighting AG placings, and then describe how you think you would be a good ambassador for the product.  Good luck and keep us posted on your experiences.

Rich Strauss had an article on his old Crucible Fitness website about racing with power but he has taken it off because he is now starting the new Endurance Nation website with another coach and you have to join to read training articles. The are also hosting some webinars on training/racing with power.

Nice job Todd and Tammy getting out there and racing this past weekend/holiday.  If any of you have past race performances (tris or standalone running races) that are not in your RACE log I would encourage you to fill out the information so I can look at them and see what type of swim/bike/run splits you can pull off for various distances.

Thought I'd post these links to training articles by Rich Strauss and Gordo Byrn.  Although somewhat slanted towards Ironman training, still great reading nonetheless.  Feel free to fire away with any questions.

While I am not in this group, I can tell you all that you are in GREAT hands with Jim!  He has a vast knowledge of not only this sport, but other endurance sports.  While he can spank even the fastest of the 20 & 30something year old triathletes, he is always curtious enough to take time to answer questions and give motivation.

Good luck this season guys and gals....may you exceed all of your goals

Tammy,

The New Year's Day Dash was in Middleton, WI, on the northwest side of Madison. This Saturday's 5 mile race (S-No-W Fun Run) is in Lake Geneva.

Todd, I read your Grandmas race report.  Had to laugh at the full bladder on the bus ride comments because every time I do that race I'm in agony with a full bladder on that ride.  Need to take an empty soda bottle with us next time.  I hope I get into the lottery for the half this year.  That course (half and full) are my favorite.

OK, folks...tell us about your big weekend training plans.  Anyone racing?   I hope to get in a 3 hour x-c ski Saturday then a longish run on Sunday combined with either a bike or swim.

5 mile run race on Saturday, then hopefully a long run in the warmer weather on Sunday. Swimming starts in earnest on Monday with an 8-week swim challenge at the Lake Geneva YMCA.
