Regular 85 Eastside Seattle WA | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN MENTOR GROUP - FULL That looks like a GREAT first tri. I love the small number of participants, and a pool swim you don't have the transition from training to competition that I did. Was that a shocker!! I had been swimming for over a month and had been a lifeguard for years (also pool). My first lake swim was 2weeks prior and I thought I was doing really well until I looked up and realized how far I was from the dock and that everyone who had come with us to the swim was IN the water...no one could get help if someone needed it!! I started to hyperventilate a bit and got really nervous. Obviously I made it back to the dock and the very next week I was FINE. Same lake, same friends, (2 xtra friends on the dock this time ) The race was the following week and I did awesome on the swim. In fact I passed people 2 heats ahead of me! They of course passed me on the run. I also love the word FLAT. and the word FAST. If I lived closer I would be tempted to tri that one too. |

Meg 1st) I would say go to a bike shop find out the specific SIZE FRAME you need to ride (SPEEEDY REEDY I RECOMMEND FOR BIKE SHOP (FREEMONT), or MONTLAKE CYCLE (KIRKLAND). Then look on Craiglist for a used one... Just my thoughts... 2nd) How to get it has your main page?? I would say get to our mentor page, then save as a favorite... Then when you open BT, open via your favorites??! Not a computer guy. But hope that helps!??? |

Following my adventures yesterday I was asking for suggestions for a new name from some fellow BTers and the first thing suggested was hail runner. It won the votes so there it is. It's still me but with a little more fun name. The triathlete formerly known as kimlogin or otherwise HailRunr |

I also am not so computer savvy but I have a techy husband so I should be able to oblige in the next day or two. Noticed the photo was from Chelanman. I am planning on doing that this year. Some friends are going to stay at a cabin on the lake for the weekend and do the triathlon while we are there. I am looking forward to it. For the women isn't it called Try-a-tri or something like that? Edited by HailRunr 2008-01-08 8:52 PM |

Member 27 Torrance, California | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN MENTOR GROUP - FULL I bookmarked the page so I could go to it after I logged onto BT. Also, I went to the control panel and listed you guys as friends so that it's easier to find you guys. It took my forever to figure out how to put that little image with my name, I can only imagine how long it'll take to post another one. LOL I did it!!!! This was at a Green Bay Packers game (they beat the heck out of Dallas that day!). Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN MENTOR GROUP - FULL Greetings all, I need some advise. I will be doing an open water swim for my long tri this summer and I have no experience in open water. The sprint tris I do are in the pool and I don't trust the water quality in the local rivers and lakes to swim there. My race will be in brackish harbor water. (Chesapeake Bay - that is in Maryland for all you west coasters ) Is there anything I should know about open water swimming? I must admit that scares me more than the distance of the race! Tracy |

Regular 85 Eastside Seattle WA | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN MENTOR GROUP - FULL Tracy I have never done a long distance OWS before but I do suggest that you get a few swims under your belt. I have been a life guard and grew up boating and swimming with my family every weekend. I had been training for a month in the pool and felt very confident with the length but 2 weeks prior I went in a lake swim with some friends for a full run through of the race. I was halfway out in the lake and all of a sudden started to hyperventilate and got really nervous. I wasn't tired or worried about my strength, I just realized I was a long way from shore and even though we had 5 of us, we were all in the water. No one could have helped if we needed it. It was VERY humbling. The very next week we were at the same lake, same friends, same distances, and I was just fine. It was the fear of the unknown mostly. I think training in the pool for the physical aspects of the race is fine. It is the MENTAL that you really need to get in OW. I also wouldn't worry too much about the conditions of the water in the Chesapeake. I lived right on the East River near Yorktown when I was growing up. It is very calm compared to the lively Pacific we have. I don't think physically it will be much different than a pool especially if you are in a more protected cove or a river off the Bay. |

Pro 4100 Wherever the trail takes me, WA. | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN MENTOR GROUP - FULL Tracy I have no idea what the conditions are like tehre, but if you have any sort of motion sickness issues in water, I would suggest taking a dramamine (sp?). I have only swam open water swim's other than a lake 2x's @ Ironman Hawaii, and the 1st time I swam the course I got out of the water and was so frickin' seasick.. If I was to have to jump on a bike I would fall off I was so dizzy! The next day we went out and swam the course again, and Prior to this I took some Dramamine, and I got out of the water feeling normal! Try and get a group of you out to the swim course and swim around a few times before the race... This will do wonders for your nerves. -Steve |

Master 2436 Apex, north carolina | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN MENTOR GROUP - FULL I just took part in the Beginners Chat on the BT website. That was an interesting experience. Strange conversations! We are suppose to be having thunderstorms in North Carolina but someone obviously forgot to tell the weather man we are in the middle of a drought on the east coast, so naturally it is sunny and 65F. I hope to do a run this weekend (goal is 1 hour) and then either a bike ride (25+ miles) or a swim. I watched the swimming training videos on the BT website and I am anxious to try out some of the techniques. By the way, thanks to all with the open water swim advise. I will definitely try them out. Enjoy life on the west coast everyone. Tracy |

Member 49 Calgary, Canada | Subject: Weekend plans For me there usually are not many athletic activities planned for the weekend, the family takes all of my time. If I feel ambitious I might cram just an hour long run on Sunday morning. We probably watch a U of Calgary basketball game tonight, family bowling on Saturday and a skate on Sunday. I do not have cable/satellite TV so will miss all the US football activities. Hope all of you have a good weekend. Train hard to get in shape or take time off to let the injuries heal. Igo PS I had a great week, training wise week totals: 6hr riding, 3 hrs swim, 1.5 to 2.5 run Edited by ITan 2008-01-19 11:46 AM |
