just 30k on the bike today... lots of hill work and trying to get some courage built up to ride and pedal in aero going downhill.  My back reminded me we did shoveling 2 days ago about 15k deep... oh well, crossfit makes biking seem so enjoyable, even when it hurts haha.

oldpueblotriguy - 2008-09-25 1:08 PM No rest for me...CFE TT: I'm working up to the ultra WOD's, so today I did a 10 miler...finished in 1:33:13 Definitely need to work in the long runs into the CFE/CF routine; I'm now money committed to a 1/2 on Nov 2nd, then the full bird, 26.2 on Dec 7th!

Ultra WODs?  For real or am I being gullible.  I've got a 1/2 on October 12th and I'm seriously thinking of doing the Boston Marathon.  12 miles Saturday on the docket...

RC, are you familiar with the CF Endurance site? They have WODs for "short course," long course," and "ultra" distance races. "Ultra" is actually supposed to prepare you for something like a 100-mile run, but as some of us discussed here, there may not be enough volume in those WODs to truly prepare someone for those distances, at least not for your first event.

Could you really prepare yourself for 100 miles of running,  now matter how you trained? I mean, body aside, I don't think your mind can really comprehend exactly how far that is running until you've done it haha I know mine couldn't.

Thanks, I see them buried within the WODs now.  SC, LC, and U.

100 miles.  Just amazing that anybody can do that...

Yeah, 100 miles becomes a mental thing. However, we questioned whether the CFE WODs can prepare you for something like a marathon. Grandy suggested, and I agree with him, that once you've done a marathon or two the CFE WODs would be a good way to get faster. But for a beginner, there's just not enough volume there.

5x5 Jerk Presses

Set1: 115 lbs

Set2: 135 lbs

Set3: 145 lbs

Set4: 155 lbs

Set5: 175 lbs

Probably started to low... 175 was the first set that really put a strain on me. Not being able to drop the weight in my globo gym and having to clean the weight into position to start with makes it a bit harder too.

You should've used a squat rack. Nobody ever uses the squat rack at the globo gyms, unless they're doing curls or leaning against it taking a break.

For fitness purposes, not being able to drop the weight is a good thing as it forces you to resist against a heavy negative. When I first started learning the Olympic lifts in my basement, I had no bumpers (still don't) and had to lower all the jerks. I increased my overhead strength a ton which carried over to my bench press even though I hadn't bench in months (still don't bench much).

yeah squat racks are always empty, I just have a personal aversion to the squat racks they use at my local gym (the 4 point ones, I grew up on the two towers that ONLY hold the bar, no extra stuff like a chin up bar.) I just feel closed in all the time

I feel you on the benching Mike, I used to be a bench fanatic, now I dread benching even on the rare occasions that crossfit WOD's ask for it.

Oh, I use to love the bench. It was my bread and butter. Of course, I was way top heavy and thankfully I never hurt myself.

Didn't get many workouts in this past week. Went to Interbike on Wednesday and Thursday so no workouts then, was still recovering on Friday... Saturday I hoped in the gym for a little bit before my regular park workout.

at the gym:
2x5 back squat 290lbs
1x3 back squat 290lbs (was going for 3x5 but just couldn't get the last 2 reps on the last set)

3x5 bench press 175lbs - still have a lot of room for improvement in my upper body.

park workout was:
20 minutes AMRAP
5 pull-ups (chest to bar)
10 push-ups
15 squats
400m run
Did 7 rounds.

Sunday I was sore and sat around watching football!

I modified the crossfit workout "Nicole" because of my upcoming physical fitness test.

As Many Rounds As Possible in 20 minutes:
Run 400 meters
Do 40 push-ups.

I made 7 rounds. I started running quickly. I did my first interval in about 80 seconds. I soon realized that I needed to slow down. My brachialis muscles were killing me on the run. About halfway through each quarter I thought my arms were going to explode. It was quite odd. My heart and legs felt great, my arms not so much.

Try this one out.  It's like a mini Murph you can really crank out.  Almost met pukie.

1 mile run (6:25)

5 rounds of:

5 pull ups, 10 push ups, 15 squats (5:32)

run 400 meters (1:46)

5 rounds of:

5 pull ups, 10 push ups, 15 squats (7:03)

1 mile run (8:46)

For time.

All told 2.25 miles, 50 pull ups, 100 push ups, and 150 squats in 29:33.

"Nate" today.

Max round in 20 minutes of:
6 pullups
6 dips
4 handstand pushups
8 70lb dumbbell swings (kettlebell style)

Got 7 rounds and 6 pullups done. (Handstands are what killed me)

Then 25 burpees for good measure.

Brought a friend, he came real close to seeing his breakfast...

Skipped endurance this morning, legs were on fire after yesterday

Nate today... icky

11 Rounds completed.  I don't know what happened, got through round 6 in under 7 minutes, then just hit a wall. Everything past was a battle. Swinging a damn 70lb dumbell is murder, I've gotta order a 2pood. On the plus side, Muscle ups and HSPU's were strong. I'm ALMOST to where I can free stand on hspu's without being near a wall. (I got 2-3 every set freestanding this time before my balance gave out.)

That workout looks like fun rcberto... I mean, in a crossfit kind of way.

Completed yesterday's WOD, but forgot to post here:

Squats 5-5-5-5-5

5 @ 135
5 @ 185
5 @ 195
5 @ 205
5 @ 205

205 was a good weight for me at the 5x5 series.  Should have performed 5 at this weight and used the 135 as another warmup set.    Next time this rolls around will try to be at 225 for the sets.

Dude, that is nasty!  11 rounds!  Free standing HSPUs!  I think I may have been able to get close if I could do the HSPUs!  Those took me forever.  The 70lb db sucked too as you say.  Oh, and I scaled muscle ups with push and pull ups.  So, nevermind I wasn't close at all!

Can you do a bar muscle up?  Which are harder rings or bar?  I have no rings and am forced to look like a crazy man at my globogym!

My gym doesn't have ring's, so only if i visit one of my bro's gym's (that actually has a crossfit specific area...sigh, when my contract runs out...) do i get to use them. So I have to do bar muscle ups, which IMHO are ALOT harder. The key is you either have to be tall enough to "hook" your hands across the top of a pull up bar, or stand on top of something (not like a box or anything too tall, I stand on 2 45lb plates stacked on top of each other.) trying to do a bar muscle up with a pull-up grip is (again, in my opinion) impossible... you really have to have your palm resting on top of the bar.

Not that I'm saying rings are easy by any means.  Just a more natural motion.

As for the HSPU's... I used to breakdance for fun... practice doing a headstand to build balance, after you can hold a headstand indefinate (well, till the blood makes you dizzy hehe) start working on a handstand... then work your way up to the HSPU.

Swinging DBs does need suck. Here's what I've noticed: It's easier to snatch a DB, but harder to swing; it's easier to swing a KB, but harder (in some ways) to snatch.

I noticed after all of the excitement over my performance yesterday that I misstated the number of rounds...I only completed 10 full rounds with the partial set being the 11th round...I know, I'll perform a penalty of 20 pushups/hour all day long!

This AM: 3xCFWU

WOD: C&J 135lbs, first min 1 rep, second min 2 reps, etc...only finiished 4 complete rounds..booo, my set-up, lift, and recovery at this weight takes too long for this type of WOD...but wow, it's thrusday and I'm wiped out!
