Why do you ask? No, wait -- I don't want to know. LOL

I'd have to agree.............

Cat, why do you ask???

LOL!

She's not answering. I think she's pretending to be Sal. LOL

Hey now, Dee. No fair taking all these shots at me while I'm playing with my new smartphone busy...

Hi Sal! Didn't your parents ever tell you that you're supposed to SHARE your toys? Yes, I meant the smartphone. You can keep the cheesecake to yourself though. Um, wait. I'm not sure that sounds right. 'Cause you're not having cheesecake by yourself. At least, I don't think so. But maybe you are... Um. I think I'll stop talking now.

Im hungry... and all this talk of cheesecake!

Now what is a smart phone?

A phone with an IQ above 130...

Phone, PDA, wireless...like a Blackberry without all the fees...

oh, oh, oh!!!!!!

I can't believe I almost forgot to post my great news! (no, it's not about a house )

I am going to be home for 9 whole days!

K graduates on May 24 and she has invited about a 75 people for the party and I'm making - you guessed it, enchiladas!

My original schedule was this

  • Leave for NE on Friday May 16 -
  • Return to PA on Sunday May 18 (10:35 pm airline time - which means sometime after 11 pm most likely)
  • Leave for NE on Wed May 21 (arriving 11 pm)
  • Return to PA on Monday May 26 (leave omaha 6 pm arrive PA 10:35 pm)

I talked to my boss and asked if he would be ok with my taking Mon and Tues and all of Wed off in addition to Thurs and Friday - He said yes!

Have I mentioned that I love my boss!

So now, my schedule is this

  • Leave for NE on Friday May 16 -
  • Return to PA on Monday May 26 (leave Omaha 2 pm arrive PA 7 pm)

Yaaaaay!  I'm so excited!

Yay Beth!

BUT, if you don't WANT to swim, that is fine. No one is forcing you to swim, and you can STILL hang out on BT and be accepted regardless of whether you ever do a tri. But, I would find it hard to believe that you CAN'T swim...

Just an friendly observation...

I probably should qualify this somewhat.

I can swim. I just can't swim fast. I don't think I ever will be able to.

Now, I could swim MORE efficiently, I'm sure. However, even based on the limited drills I've done, I don't swim any appreciably faster when focusing on efficiency. I'm less TIRED when I get out of the water, and I suppose that's something.

But, it still stinks in a race situation to be so bad in the water that you're not going to make up the time on the bike or the run, no matter what.

Why does it matter?  When I swam a 4min/100 open water my first time, I didn't care what my time was...I FINISHED.  My bike was great and my run was mediocre, but I FINISHED.  I NEVER worry about the competition.  Usually what matters to me is that I beat a previous PR...even if it is by a second or two.  It always means improvement...

It KILLS me to see people who are grossly overweight kick my azz in the water. It kills me, man.

More buoyancy.  The grass is always greener...you wish you had more bouyancy, they wish they had less body fat...

Maybe a musical allegory will make sense here. I played clarinet in addition to guitar in high school, and at the time, to be in jazz band - and play guitar, which is what I wanted to do - you were required to be in band. Which I hated - HATED marching band. Also, in cold weather, which was most of what marching band was about, reed instruments like the clarinet and sax lose their volume as they get colder.

So, the summer before my senior year, I took home a baritone and attempted to teach myself the instrument, figuring we needed baritones in the band worse than clarinets (which we had plenty of). I screwed with that thing for 6 weeks, and I got where I could play a B flat one octave scale - but that was IT. I didn't have the amature to play a brass instrument. Simply didn't have the talent - this happens.

Talent comes from a combination of things: genetics...and hard work...I was blessed with a musical ear (played saxaphone in a college jazz band), but if I were to play a brass instrument, I would suck...give me 4 years, and I would be awesome...I think you're wanting some instant improvement without putting in the work...

I'm a good musician; I'm good enough I could have easily made a career of it. I can play a drum kit competently, if I spent any time at it, I'd be damn good. I can play a little piano; again, if I had one and spent the time practicing, it would be interesting to see how good I could become. I can play electric bass in addition to guitar.

BINGO!!!

But I can't play a brass instrument worth a damn (I had an antique trumpet I screwed with as well for a while). Swimming is much the same way - I can *do* it, but I'll never do it well.  You either have the talent/ability, or you don't.

WRONGO!!!  You also said you'd never be able to run a marathon...

I'm willing to be there are lots of people who complete one triathlon but quit after a while because there's one discipline they don't do well - so they go back to being a single sport athlete to stay in shape (and there's nothing wrong with that).[/QUOTE]

Bingo again...

And following up on my swim post, this article from the NY Times was posted on my tri club email list this morning:

For Peak Performance, 3 Is Not Better Than 1

edited to provide a link to the article

Thanks

Great article...

I'm not out to qualify for the Olympic marathon/cycling/swimming team, so a little bit of slow due to cross-training is fine with me...besides, I've had less running injuries since I've started cross-training...

I've actually had opposite results...my running/endurance has actually improved since cross-training...

Beth - that's great news! Sorry about the article. I forgot the BT Rulez on that.

Sal - my problem is simply finishing isn't good enough for me. I like to do well, if not win. That's the reason I avoid doing another tri - because I can't do well. Plus issues related to my X, her uberfast BF, and the hell I went through in my divorce, but I won't repeat those here. I'm still hurting on those counts, and a wise person would probably just walk away from all racing and ride my bike and collect butterflies and never race again, but that would be admitting defeat to people I can't admit defeat to (even though, unlike them, I graduated from college, and that's a much bigger accomplishment than winning any triathlon, IMHO).

Crap, I've already said too much.

Fair enough Scott.  I just didn't want you trying to convince the Nibbs clan here that good swimmers are ONLY the result of talent and genetics.

I was a poor swimmer.  After 4 years I'm a mediocre swimmer who does lots of yards to have a MOP tri swim experience...

I was just defending my peeps/Nibbs.  Didn't want anyone to become discouraged thinking that they will never be good swimmers because they weren't born with the right genes.  I was terrified of open water and couldn't swim 50 yards.  I think I'm proof that with a little bit of confidence (self-psychoanalysis) and A LOT of hard work, someone can do an Ironman swim...I'm halfway there...

I can't find my car remote.  It's not attached to my keys because the connecting piece broke.  I know I had it yesterday because I locked my car when I got home, but I don't know what happened after that.  Not in the purse, not in the house (that I can see).  Maybe the cats took it somewhere?  Maybe I dropped it in the street?  It's really frustrating.

That stinks. I lost my car remote within the first year we had the car...Sugar Daddy still has his - and we still have the car after almost 8 years. I always have to use my key to get in & stuff...but he did "loan" me his remote when I took the car to Atlanta.

We have 2 floating around the house somewhere.  One disappeared when we moved and I haven't found it yet because we still haven't unpacked everything.

I'm more concerned that I dropped it outside.  It would suck to have someone steal the car.  I guess I should start taking everything out of the car at night now.

I'm of half a mind just to walk away from tris entirely and only race duathlons and run races, but there's no point in me staying here as this is - despite what people say - a triathlon site that really isn't that friendly to people who Do Other Things. I'm thinking that when my current paid membership expires of having marma delete my account and moving on.

I don't think BT is *that* unfriendly to people who don't do tris.  Yes, there is some amount of teasing and questioning why you don't do tris, but I think that's kind of to be expected.  You could always walk away for awhile and see if you still feel the same way in 3 months.  Deleting your account seems a little drastic.  Is it possible you're just overwhelmed right now and you'd feel differently later?

Um, I've never even done a Tri. But I've never found this site to be "unfriendly" to me.

Do what's best for you. If you don't want to do Tri's, then don't. You're a very good runner and biker. So concentrate on biking and running, if you want.

It's all good.
