johnkav - 2009-01-18 10:50 AM Susan, Great race recap-very encouraging to us who are a "little" older. It looks like you guys will not be in Wilmington this year. That makes me sad. Maybe some other manatees will consider it. John

That is true.  We will be in Augusta Ga for the Augusta 70.3.  I would any of the other Manatees that are looking for a late season sprint to look at the Wilmington (N.C.) YMCA Race.  The race is super (about 1200 people I think), the course is very cool and the area is beautiful...and John will be there...how much better can it get    It really is a great race that I will do again.

joeseal - 2009-01-18 5:30 PM With all the great tips I have received from this group, I have made some great improvements in all three disciplines.

Joel,

Leveraging others' experience is a great way to make shortcuts and save pain, frustration and time. Keep looking at yourself while training and always ask questions. It actually helps a lot.

To all,

My question today is, how would you know that you need  a bike fit? What is the criteria? time you can spend on the aero-bars? Total time you can ride?

Thanks in advance.

I know that I need a bike fit because (well, "need" is relative... lol) my body is smaller than it was last year. I still have ugly R trap pain after 30 mins or so on the bike. I know that I am ready to be a bit more aggressive on the bike. Hopefully it will help! We'll see!! Saturday 10:30am here I come!!

The surefire sign is any discomfort, numbness or pain when you ride ... certainly anything that jumps out over the short distance is going to be magnified by the thousands of pedal strokes you'll take in a longer ride.

If you have aerobars (either on a roadie or tri) and you can't spend MOST of your time in them, it's probably time to get your fit tweaked (or get a fit if you never have). If you're popping up and down a lot when you have aerobars, you're essentially negating the benefits of having them.

There is an initial adjustment period when you first get aerobars in terms of neck position/strength, but that will be true even if you get a pro fit.

I had a good morning run today. I was going to do a long run, but it did not work out. I decided to do a speed day. I ran my personal best for 6 miles at a 7.5 average. The first mile was a warm up and I felt very good and relaxed. I picked up the pace on the second mile, and after the third I thought myself I should stride out a little more. I held the pace from there on out with not too much difficulty. My goal for this year is 8 miles in 60 minutes. Hopefully my swim later today goes equally as good. I hope everyone has a great training day today!

Since Steve already stole the Hear Ye, Hear ye line, I'll have to settle for

Hey Manatees -

Our own Ronen also has a very big race on Sunday - he is running a full Mary!!

With the 3 hr time difference, he'll probably be starting just about as I'm finishing

Ronen you have trained well and hard and are going to ROCK in the race.  I did read in your blog that the conditions may be rainy.

Any insights or tips for Ronen for the rainy race conditions?

NO COTTON anywhere.

Wear a hat (hopefully you have trained with one at least occasionally)  If not I would start with one and discard it if it bothers you...otherwise it is awesome keeping the rain from directly hitting you in the face.

Tuck a small chamois in the back of your shorts (that sounds naughty   ) but it is great to wipe off your face etc. during water stops etc. and it wrings right out when it's wet.

Lastly....ROCK THE RACE.  You are ready and you are a STUD.

Hydrate.  Many people do not hydrate properly when it is rainy or colder.  It will not only help you finish but your recovery will be much easier.

Thanks all for the great advice!

Yanti,

Given what you wrote about bike fitting - I think that I need to get fitted on mine. I cannot stay more than 10-15 minutes in the aero-position. My arms and neck start hurting. That's was one of the reasons that I asked this question.

Erin, Steve, Suzie, and the rest,

Thanks for your advice and best wishes. I will carry a small tube of "Aquaphor" with me, I wear a hat all the time - so that would not be an issue, I will take a small towel with me and will stick to my nutrition/hydration plan. When I checked on the weather forecast this morning, I noticed a change from yesterday - which now reads: " A few Showers" - sounds way better than rain to me...

Beth,

Good luck to you on your first 1/2 marathon. You will never forget this race, regardless of how many will follow.

SUPER GOOD LUCK TO BETHIE LOVE AND RONEN THIS WEEKEND!!!

I am so very excited for both of you.

Oh, and rain tips ... if you wish, carry one of those dollar-store, folds-into-a-teeny-tiny packet rain ponchos with you. Or cut a headhole and armholes out of a lightweight large trash bag. It'll keep you warm while you're waiting to start and dry during the race.

Scotch-Gard your shoes. I kid you not. It'll help the rain bead up off your shoes instead of getting inside and soaking them.

I did a short run in the rain tonight and thought of antoher tip for you, Ronen: Be careful! Even if it doesn't rain much, or it's just wet, it can get super slippery. Make sure you avoid things like metal grates and painted areas and soggy leaves. Be extra cautious early in the run when it might still be a little dark out and hard to see, especially with so many people around (and in all the excitement, you're probably less likely to be watching where you're going). Oh, and puddles! Avoid those like crazy. I've found that even in long-ish runs my shoes won't get too wet from the rain, but one misstep in a puddle and I'm screwed. I can't imagine running a marathon with soaked shoes.

Good luck Ronen and Beth!  Keep moving and enjoy the race.

I'm sorry that I've been mia lately.  I've been recovering from a muscle strain that really took me out of commission for the past week.  I'm ready to train again but my work schedule has been ridiculous the past few days.  Yesterday, I started work at 7:00 a.m and did not get home until 11:00 p.m. and I have to do it all over again today.  I'm hoping to at least get off work at a more reasonable time today!

I hope everyone is doing well.

I managed to get very little done in terms of training today. I thought I was going to run 10 miles, but I felt so fatigued and flat I stopped at 3 miles. I went straight to the pool and felt the same. My tummy hurt so I bagged the swim at 600 yards.  I really don’t like not being able to get done what I planned. I really wanted to get in some good training this week as I will be traveling to Tennessee next week and I may not have a chance to train much.  I was looking at next week as being my recovery days. But it looks like this week will be recovery as well.
I Hope everyone has a good training day today.

(Go RONEN and BETH!!!!)
