mdfahy - 2010-02-15 6:51 PM I am considering buying a bike trainer at some point and wanted to start researching them.  Any recommendations or tips on bike trainers would be appreciated.  What to look for? Brands?  Place to buy?  Thanks.

I recently purchased the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine (Fluid) from REI.  I had a 15% off coupon for REI.  My wife has the CycleOps Magnetic and she is happy with that one.   When I did the research ALL of the reviews for the Kurt Kinetic were great!  I don't think it is necessary to buy the front wheel holder though, I just put a 2x4 piece of wood under the front wheel.

I recently bought a new CycleOps Fluid 2 trainer off eBay and I think I paid about $200 for it.  And I must say that I LOVE it.  It's quiet and the resistance increases automatically as you go to the lower gears (you don't have to change the resistance on the trainer.  I saved $25-30 by not buying the riser ring.  I just screwed 2 2x4's together and then screwed them onto a piece of plywood.  does the same thing.  This is my first trainer, so I don't have a point of reference, but like I said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE it.  And all the reviews I've read on it have been very positive.

billsorg - 2010-02-16 8:48 AM Just curious... what did it cost to rent the Zipps?

$60? for the weekend. Maybe $70. Neat to try. Maybe $50. Somewhere in that range. I would do it again for a big race, but not something small.

I paid something like $200 locally a couple years back for my Cycleops Fluid 2. Awesome deal and I just recently paid $13 to get a new resistance unit. They will all breakdown after so much time. Would highly recommend.

I think I may give it a try for my "A" race at the end of the season - Syracuse IM 70.3.

I got a nice 6.6 mile run in this morning.  Felt great.  Bottom of the feet feel a little irritated, but I don't think there are any blisters.  May be time for a new set of running shoes.

What is the theory behind the zipp wheels?  We usually have some kind of wind here, so does that make it more compelling or less?

More. Aero trumps weigh in most cases. Weight is a big factor when riding hills. Wind can make a disc or H3 more difficult to control, but the Zipps may help. But again your body accounts for something like 80% of wind resistance.

Being a clydesdale, my weight probably accounts for more like 98%! Wink

I was going to ask Aaron what he was implying!  If you've seen my aero position, I'm sure my number is actually even higher!

Darren,

I heard that the Ada cycling club was going to come to P.V. and ride the Valley Rally the first weekend in May.  Just curious if you were coming with them.  My wife is the coordinator for the ride, so I will be there bright and early "volunteering".  I think, I may actually get to ride it this year after helping set up.

Ray

I need to find out and call those dudes.  I'm actually not in the club as of yet but have been on their mountain bike trails (they're pretty good), several times.  Want to if it works out.

I rode a lot of miles on a Puegeot several years ago and never had any problems with the seat.  But upgraded to another bike last year and this seat is crap.  To all the guys, any seat suggestions?

I've had a lot of issues with numbness, so I've searched for a saddle since I started riding.  I've tried many, many models, including the most expensive to the most bizarre, and I have settled on an Adamo.  No numbness at all, it's a little wide but for me by far the most comfortable.

Saddles tend to be very a individual preference.

Mine is something like this.  http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/controls/saddles/specialized/PRD_331250_2509crx.aspx
To help with numbness, I skew my seat to the side.  This may be TMI, but.......  I hang naturally to the left, so my saddle points a few degrees to the right.  A club member told me about this technique several years ago.  Since then, I have had no problems.  Maybe I can take a picture of my saddle from the top view so you can see how much it's skewed.

I also have an Adamo Race. If it is too wide try using tie wraps on the front of the rails to pull it a bit closer.

I would highly caution against this and speak with a fitter. twisting your saddle to one side or another can throw off your entire bodies geometry and make 'wierd' use of muscles. BAsically things will not be even. However if it works, it works.

Awesome idea on the tie wraps Aaron, I'll be trying that this weekend.

And I have that same issue Ray.  If you try skewing your seat a little one way or the other and it's what you need, the difference isn't subtle.  It's worth trying.

I am also in the market for a new saddle.  I forget the name of the saddle I have (San Marco, I think), but it's like sitting on the thin end of a 2x4.  It came with the bike and I've been using it for 2 years, but I'm through with it.  Just too much discomfort.  I'm looking for something shaped like the one Ray had a link for.  Next month, I'm going to take my bike to the LBS and get an overall tune-up, get my big chain-ring shifter fixed and get a new saddle.

Here's a question to the group.  I've been reading some IM and HIM race reports and some of the people are putting body glide on their feet prior to putting their shoes on.  I understand the hole body glide thing with the wetsuit, but I've never heard of putting it on your feet.  I would think that it would just cause your foot to slip around inside your shoe.  What's the deal?  I've been having some issues with rawness and some blistering on my feet lately and am willing to try anything, but this sounds suspect to me.  Thoughts?

Have a great weekend team!!!!

Just re-read my post and maybe I wasn't clear... they're putting the body glide on their feet prior to putting their RUNNING shoes on.

I usually put some form of lubricant (vaseline or what not) on the "hot" points of my feet before my long runs.  Seems to help a lot.  I guess the body glide is used the same way but is specifcally made for the purpose - it eliminates the hot spots and therefore lessens blisters and soreness.  I know tons of people use it all the time for swimming and biking; I'm thinking one the weather heats up I'll be trying some to help with chafing.

After reading Aaron's response about saddle shifting I didn't mean to steer anyone to an unsafe position and I totally agree with him - get the bike fitting.  The fitter is actually the one who tried moving my saddle a bit to the side - and it's a VERY small angle, but it made a big difference for me.  My cycling buddies convinced me that a professional fitting is one of the non-negotiables about cycling more and faster.

The Adamo has two noses rather than one, and from outside to outside of the two of them is a bit wider than a "normal" performance saddle.

I'm assuming he means to individually tie wrap the two nose fronts and pull them a little closer together so the total width is smaller across the front.  I have a very small amount of rubbing at the front (due to my massive thighs!  Smile ) so if I could pull them in even just a tiny bit it might help a lot.  It's not really an issue for these 1 hours rides on the trainer, but I'm thinking when I get outside and start going longer it might add up to a problem if I'm rubbing at all.

ok, thanks that makes sense on the saddle.

My sister-in-law put's body glide on her feet to prevent blisters and she says it helps. I told her to stop buying cheap socks...but then I can be a jack...er...donkey sometimes. ;-)

On a side note...clip-on aero bars arrived today. Should make for some fun installation and learning to ride again. If I fall, I blame you guys for making me think it was necessary ;-)
