Veteran 279![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() South Suburb of Chicago, IL | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED!I think I am somewhat caught up with everything in this thread. The last week or so have been busy and hectic with training, school, working part time, coaching swimming, and training lifeguards for the summer at my pool and organizing the swim lesson program there. I am somewhat stressed out, but relieve that stress with my workouts! Today is my swim team's first meet and since we moved up to a harder conference, I don't expect to as well overall as a team, but individual wise, we should have many kids hit some of there personal best times! Hopefully everybody has been having an entertaining and enjoyable week!!! I can't wait till we consistently get some nice warm weather in the mornings here! |

I was leaning slighty to the left on my saddle. My saddle was a little more compressed on that side. Do you have a leg length discrepancy? Shims on your bike shoe might help if that is the case. Another swimming issue for me is timing of the pull. When does the pull with each arm start during a stroke cycle? I want to make sure I am gliding on each side but I don't think I am on the left. Congrats on the 5K hardware! Happy Monday everyone! In reality, you should never be gliding in freestyle. If you try and glide in freestyle, you create a dead spot or down time in your stroke where you start to sink and make it harder for yourself to create the lift necessary to stay towards the surface of the water. Your arms should be consistently opposite each other and never stopping. The second they enter the water they immediately start the catch phase of your next stroke. Catch phase is simply how the hand enters and catches the water to start your next pull. Your hand should never enter the water close to your head. When your hand enters the water, your arm should be as fully extended forward as possible. These reduces how much your hand has to try and push through the water, which creates drag, to get it fully extended. Your arms should be entering directly in front of your shoulder and not crossing the imaginary line that splits you in half. You fixed all the issues I had swimming with this post, why did I shell out money for private lessons? |

Will get up to date soon with everyone's progress. First race was a scratch down in Knoxville because of the knee and shoulder pain. Knee feels alot better (lots of rest the last few weeks and doing some strength training at home) and still working on the shoulder. Haven't worked out much lately, so should be pretty fresh when I get back in there. Injuries and work stress and certainly demotivated me lately. I just need to get in 1 or 2 workouts and I will be back on the horse, just hard to force yourself . . . HELP I know the feeling.....not the injury part, but the work taking all the time. Just got back to regular training, and a little BT time (just joined the group...) and it feels soooooo good. Just remember how good it feels when your train and race, it will help on the motivation side... |

I thought I was too far out in front but I guess not. Anyone else done a marathon? If so, what training plan did you use and did you like your results? I am following a plan but I think I could be using something with a little more mileage. |

I thought I was too far out in front but I guess not. Anyone else done a marathon? If so, what training plan did you use and did you like your results? I am following a plan but I think I could be using something with a little more mileage. I followed the FIRST plan which had me only running 3 days a week, but you're supposed to either cross-train or do easy runs the other days of the week, with one day completely off. http://www.furman.edu/first/fmtp.htm I liked it because it allowed me to do other things besides running and still be following my program. Plus, if you just do easy/recovery runs for your "cross-training" then the program becomes more similar to a regular Hal Higdon plan that incorporates speedwork. I felt pretty prepared for my marathon, besides being beaten by the hills, but that was mostly because I didn't think to train on hills. I'm actually planning on using a more advanced version of the same program for my second marathon this year. Since the training overlaps with the tail end of my HIM training, I'm definitely using swimming and biking as my cross-training activities. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-244-255-8257-0,00.html Edited by yogachic 2010-05-19 1:36 PM |

Expert 885![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: Disturbed275's Mentor Group - CLOSED!I've done several marathons, but they have all been as part of a Team in Training group so the plans were ones the coach developed. I've done best when running 4-5 days a week and including hill repeats and/or speedwork at least once a week. I plan to use a Pfitz plan for the next marathon, which I won't even think about until AFTER my Ironman in November. |

I am following a plan but I think I could be using something with a little more mileage. I've run two. For the first one I don't remember what the plan was. All I know is that I battled a foot injury didn't get in nearly the miles I should have. The last one I believe I used Higdon's intermediate plan. It called for running 5 days a week, but I thought it was lacking in mid-distance runs. I still finished with a 20 minute PR so I was happy with that. Higdon has several plans available from novice to advanced so can look through them to see what fits your needs and time commitments. With the right plan I should be able to qualify for Boston. I am looking at using the Pfitzinger-Douglas plan next go around to take a serious crack at the BQ attempt. |

Knee still hurts a little, so taking it easy. Decided to start working out in the morning to replicate races more. First of all is sucks getting up early and actually have to exert that much effort. Second, I totally forgot that if you haven't don't it for awhile, you stomach hate you for the first week or two before getting used to it. Plus, I always have to go to the bathroom in the morning so hopefully this will help with my bathrom issues and running. Not this monring, but hopefully. A friend told me to try drinking some caffeine before runs to spur the bathroom break quicker. How long before you run should you do that? Hope everyone else is doing well. |

Carrie, glad to hear you are back training a little. Take things easy as you build back up. As for your caffeine question, it is a natural diuretic, but I have no clue as to a time line for its effects. It might take a little trial and error. |

It'll be nice to see what the course is like, I'm from Milwaukee area originally and I know that it is much flatter than what I've been riding, but I'm looking forward to testing my speed on a truly flat course. |

Had my fun duathlon this morning and it went very well considering the limited training I was able to do over the last few months. I should be OK for the "official" duathlon on June 6. |

Humidity, hills and lots of wind. After a crash last year, I'm very hesitant in high winds, so the ride was mentally challenging for me. After almost getting blown over twice, I decided I had had enough. Still got in more than my training plan called for though. Hope everyone else's weekend was better. |
