Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread

This is my first triathlon and first IM. I started Oct 15 to do some weight training and mild running/swimming/biking to get aerobic up and start creating a base. Early november had a run in with Patellar tendinitis so didn't run for a month and barely got on the bike so I was a fish for 4-5 weeks which was great. I am strong swimmer but good to already see technique improving and see where my times are at.

Just started running past week and feeling great so hopefully my tendinitis is behind me. My coach has started our build 1/1/11 and excited about it. Looking to finish strong with strong time. He is balancing intensity with time and making steps bc want to do everything to prevent injuries. I am confident in my coach that I will be very prepared for IMLOU.

Just enjoying the journey and this whole process.

Ran the Rocket City Marathon then took a 2 1/2 week vacation and brought back several extra pounds to work away.  Santa brought me an Ironman Muncie Entry to go along with Louisville.  Looking forward to starting some base workouts and reading these posts sure does help build the excitement of my first Ironman year!

marathongirl11 - 2011-01-03 5:08 PM I am still battling plantar fasciitis and haven't been able to run one step since IMFL (Nov 6th).....ugh!  Will this ever get better!?!  Soooo frustrating.

Swimming 2 or 3 days per week with my Masters group.  Spin class once or twice per week and lots of time on the 'ole bike trainer (boring!).  Bright side ~ maybe my bike split will improve this year

Happy Training!

It took me a while to get over mine.  I'm sure you've tried everything.  Mine was from tight calf muscles.  What helped me the most was the splint I could put my foot in and watch TV.  Like the strassberg sock (which didn't work well for me), but made of plastic.  It kept my foot dorsiflexed for a couple hours a night.  You're supposed to sleep w/ them, but I couldn't make that work.

Also the golf ball massage on your foot and toe crunches.

Good luck.

The Cube - 2011-01-03 8:46 PM Way to eairly to start "formal" training guys. Im looking to work my running thru Jan/Feb leading into March and the Publix/Georgia 1/2 mary. After that, I will start my "formal" IM training April 1 with my coach. Just doing "base" maintinance workouts now....trainer 1-1.5hrs, 2000 yrd swims, 10k runs. Remember its a long road and starting to eairly can lead to burnout!!

totally agree!!

Nancy and The Cube have good points about not getting too formal too soon. I guess I call this "preseason" training as I slowly work on my base fitness and form which enable me to begin my "formal training" in good condition. However, if your "traning plan" basically serves you to this end and you need structure because you are unclear on what else to do...rock on, but don't be afraid to freelance to meet your needs if they are not being met.

Bottom of the foot pain is also a pain in the a**. It does take a long time to get over, but the suggestions given earlier worked well for me when I had it. Keep streched, roll a tennis ball or the like, and keep your foot straight as much as possible during resting times (as suggested earlier).

Reasonable swim today followed by a decent run. I gues I had two reasonably decent workouts.

Peace,
~Sam

I did Rocket City too!  Got stomach cramps and didn't do as well as I had hoped.  Nice race though.

Yep, I've tried everything.  I have been sleeping in the night splint, almost every single night, since Thanksgiving.  Now, I'm sick and run down from lack of sleep....lol.  Unfortunately, my doctor (who is an avid Triathlete and multiple Ironman finisher) says mine is really, really bad and traditional methods (icing, stretching, etc.) are probably not going to work anymore.  Its my own fault; I've been battling it since July and refused to give up my run training for IMFL.  I was a DNF at IMWI '09 (bike mechanical issues) and just absolutely refused to let my dream come to an end....again.  I'm still holding out hope though.  There is a new method that we may be trying.  It's where you take blood from your arm, centrifuge it and then inject it back into the fascia.  Anyone heard of this? I'm looking into the option, checking insurance info, etc....hopefully, we can get this figured out soon.  In the meantime, I will just keep swimming and biking

Marathongirl11, a colleague of mine had planter fasciitis, not sure of severity but he used active reflex therapy as a treatment.  Although quite painful it did the trick, he’s back running pain free.  A father from my youngest sons’ hockey team had the blood transfusion procedure done, after complete knee replacement, to help stimulate tissue growth and repair.  He’s not sure it helped or not.   Good luck

Chris,

Thanks for the info.  I am back to the Dr on the 11th, I will ask about the active reflex therapy.  I'd be willing to try just about anything to get me running again!

Thanks again.

Adam- Look at it this way, I did IMLOU in 2009, which was probably a record cool day for the event, which followed a very mild (aka not hot) summer and the event was not wetsuit leagal.
Do not plan on having your wetsuit.
Believe me I am a huge fan of my wetsuit, but it felt great to have accomplished IM without one.

I never say never, but there is almost zero chance Louisville will ever be wetsuit legal.  On that note, I think this is the last year of the contract to hold the race in Louisville.  Any word on a contract renewal?

Yeah...until they move the race to March, bring your skinsuit!  Wetsuits won't be legal.

I think technically you're allowed to wear one, but will be disqualified.  You can still finish the race though.

Newbie question - what's the advantage of a skin suit?  I saw many people wear them last year.  Do they really increase your speed?  Enough so that they're worth the time in T1 taking them off or changing (can they be worn over what you want to wear the rest of the day)?  And worth the cost?  If so, short skin suit versus long.

Thanks all, I was reading past race reports and was looking for some clarification. Well, one more thing to work on, open water without a suit. I interested also if anyone has an opinion either way on the skin suit question.Adam

Speed suit will reduce drag and provides more of a hydrodynamic benefit over just wearing your  tri suit. It is said that it is also supposed to keep your cloths from absorbing water. However, note that there are a lot of them out there. TriSports has a ton and most are "on sale" because they are no longer USAT Legal and can not be used outside a race that is not wetsuit legal.

That said, I have a TYR Torque. It is USAT compliant.

I won't be wearing a skinsuit. However, if the swim were wetsuit legal (which it won't be) I would be all over that.  A skinsuit does not provide the ease of mind through bouyancy that a wetsuit does, and I won't be in contention enough to concern myself with the possible minor time savings a skinsuit may provide. The skinsuit does not hide swim inefficiencies like a wetsuit can, so I'm hoping improving my swim efficiency will be a solid alternative.

your welcome.  I spoke with my today,  I got the name wring it's Active Release Technique.  He also said the type of work done on him invloved scrapping a tool down the length of the ligaments,  to strech them and breakdown the scar tissue.  When that was done the issues healed themselves.  He was at about a 6-7 in terms of how bad it was, he had a treatment a week for 6 weeks.  I'd offer the name of the place but we're in Canada so it won't help.

All the Best,

Chris
