wow....
NO clue what all of those numbers mean (except for the cadence!)
one of these days (when i'm feeling less cheap), i'll bite the bullet & see where i stand (numbers-wise!)
would be interesting to know....
(especially as i move into HIM training next year!)

today, my mind has completely wandered over to compression tights....
i'm intrigued...
might splurge a LITTLE before payday next week & buy a pair

Just wonderin' - when is everyone's season start?
For me (Toronto suburbs) the first Duathlon will be late may and first Tri will be early June.
a few running races and bike race earlier in the spring.

----------------------------------------------
last week training:
Swim 2:30 (~7000m)
Bike 5:30 (all indoors)
Run 2:50  (~30km)
Weight: down about ~8lbs since Christmas. Another 15lbs to go before May. Last week I increased my caloric intake as I was strating to run low on steam.

Paris Island Triathlon March 19th.
I have done this over the previous 2 years. It is a great location and Beaufort is a nice little town to visit. There is a great little seafood restaurant downtown that is almost worth the drive in itself.

Tri-Charleston HIM April 30.

Oceanside 70.3, d-day is 9 weeks away. Swam last night at the Y. It was only 1300 yds but it was good. Then I took a chance and ran this morning, 2.5 mi just to test out the ITB. Nothing there. So I'm feeling good. Took the girls to Disneyland for about 4hours, rebuilt a lawnmower carb, and now reaping the rewards of Daddy's day off(couch- sitting).Have a great day all!

I'm jelous! Its such beautiful area.
I lived in Greenville, SC for several years as a kid - my familly would vacation at Fripp Island (just north of Parris).

But where do you swim? Isn't oacean is full of sharks and the fresh water is full of gators and snakes?

The swim is in the Marine Recruit training station pool. The pool is huge. They only  use half the pool and it is still not crowded. The one with gators is Tri-Charleston

I spent 3-4 months in Toronto working at "Sick Kids" Lived off Younge St. Great memories. I loved the town. It was very clean and the people were friendly. Unfortunately the weather sucked so I left.

My first tri of the season is March 27: SuperSeal Oly in San Diego.  I'm unofficially starting the season with the Mardi Gras half-marathon on February 13.  I say unofficially because I will be with my best friend from high school, my best friend from college and we will be partaking in some of the city's revelry...it's about fun, not racing.  We will wear tutus and tiaras and we will be debaucherous. After that, it's time to get extra serious.  Racing every month.

LOL!
you should see toronto NOW!
(not pretty)
darn this snow!!!

for me, the first tri will be in June with running events scattered throughout (& 1 cycling event)

how do you guys plan your race schedules/plans?
i'm struggling with that right now.

i know what my goal races are: marathon in May & the Oly tri in Sept

I just have a problem pacing myself (so to speak) as far as the number of events go in between...
(& yet i like entering them!)
i enjoy them... and i figure it's a good way to keep track of progress & things i need to work on...

I am really excited to watch all of you have great race seasons this year! Bring it bitchez!

I happen to really like high cadence spinning. I think that really helped upped my cadence average last year which was key IMO to being more economical/efficient on the bike. I used to flat out mash all the time and would come out of most rides with a 78 cadence and beat for the run. Now I am more of a mix between mash and spin and my cadence is in the mid 80s mostly and I usually feel better coming into the run even though my tri-run times went up.

Shanks said not to worry about the tri-run times going up because the IM split was what we targeted and it came down by about 20 mins.

As to the 30 mins run test, all I can say is good luck! Those things suuuuuuck! For some reason Shanks is letting me do it as a 5k this week. That means 20 mins or less of hell. 30 mins of all out is just sheer abuse.

Hope you all are having a great day! Lets get the party started. We still have about 7-8 mentor threads to catch. What are you a bunch of sissies?

I want to read the "how to plan your season".  I haven't signed up for anything, but my goal is the Cranberry Olympic in August.  Did it as a sprint last year and it's a great course.

glad to be in good company working towards the olympic goal!!

i was poking around some local tri event websites, and i found an event that's approx 1.5 months before the Oly & it has the following distances:
1k swim, 30k bike, 7k run

could be a good way to transition from the more classic sprint distances into the longer stuff?
that POTENTIALLY could become tri #3 on my schedule....

Nic,
Tri #1 I believe is Binbrook - its a very nice course with a bit of off-road running - I found it to be a challenging sprint.
Tri #2 I believe is the Welland Sprint. I did it last year and it was my favorite race of the past 4 years. Great, fast, flat course.
Tri #3 I beleive is Cobourg Sprint - I did Cobourg 2 or 3 times. This one can be tough: its in lake Ontario so depending on the weather you can have calm, crystal clear water or 2 foot swells. The bike course has a lot of rolling hills.
#4 is Wasaga -  I haven't done this one.

But basically all the HSBC Multisport Canada races are top notch. John Salt (the race director) really does a great job making them fun and friendly.

YIKES!
tempted....

digression.... (i love digressing when i'm at work) Tongue out

my on-going tri shoe hunt.
i tried on a pair i LOVE at my LBS which (even though they're 2009) are still nearly full price
(they took..... $20 off)

so i found a pair of shoes that are the 2008 model online for $90-- $110 + change including shipping....

$259.99 in store for the 2009 model... or $90 for the 2008s online...
think it's worth the risk??

yes Mark....
you speak my language
those are exactly the events.
binbrook would possibly be my comfort zone (since that's where i did my 1st ever try a tri)
welland would be to get a feel for the course in advance of tackling the HIM in 2012
#3 would be to guage my progress heading into #4
and #4 (or Wasaga) would be the goal for this year!

but now... i might swap Belwood for Cobourg!

but i've never done a trisport canada event...
they seem to be a slightly more hardcore & competitive crowd... (or maybe i'm wrong on that??)
Embarassed

Nic - You are bang on in your assessment. I find the Subaru Trisport series far more hardcore. At many of their events there will be a handful of professionals competing. At my age, with a wife and 2 kids in tow I prefer the smaller, friendlier Multisport Canada races and venues. But I still get my butt kicked there. I also highly recommend the HSBC Lakeside races in mid-September – great location if you are bringing family and friends.

As for the shoes, you should be fine ordering on-line as long as they did not change the size/shape of the model.  I bought a pair of Specialized Tri Vents over the internet because I already had a similar pair of Specialized shoes in the same size.

*** Warninig - I'm about to gripe and whine ***

I came down with Strep Throat today. These will be the first workouts I'm going to miss since I started my IM training plan 6 weeks ago. Oh, woe is me! Cry  And I'm travelling on business so getting to a doctor is tricky.

(i ordered them)
i CAN'T resist that kind of a deal!

sorry my LBS lost some of that business... but there's no way they'd come down in price THAT much!

& good to know....
Belwood would be an expiermental sort of "just to complete" event...
the slightly increased swim, bike & run distances intrigued me....

(multisport canada offers the slightly extended sprint courses, but those events seem to be SUPER flat!)

still lots of time to decide though!

I switched things around a bit today.  Woke up with a headache and I've been a bit more tired than usual.  Everyone in my lab is sick, except me, and I'd like to keep it that way.  I interpreted the tiredness as my immune system fighting something off, so I slept in and skipped my swim.  I'll still have a total of 3 swims this week, though, so I'm okay with that.  Did a 45 min bike, 2.5 mile run brick and followed it up with 15 min of core work.  Here's my new vow: I will do core work 3x/week.  Really must start doing this!
