Good morning, everyone!

How long does it take to recover from a half marathon (this is my first time racing this distance)?  Not long; right?  My oly training plan calls for a run focused week following the half marathon, but I'm going to switch it with the week following - a bike focused week.  Will I be good to increase mileage again 1 week post-half marathon?

I'm really having some anxiety about swimming in open water.  I've never done it before in a race scenario.  I'm sure the learning curve is huge here.  It's way too cold to practice right now.  I guess I'm hoping that by June 1 the water will warm up a bit, so I can get a couple swims in before my June 12 race.

Also, does anyone here use a tempo trainer in the pool?  I pulled mine out of the dust bin and used it again last night, and it really helped me to focus on form v. speed only.  How do you use your tempo trainer in your training (if you use one)?

Sorry...full of questions today

My first OWS race was very scary until I got into a rthym. I just put that little mantra that Dori from Finding Nemo says"-just keep swimming, just keep swimming" in my head and just like that it was over. I had very little OWS practice before and the practices seemed to just make my anxiety worse so I just reminded myself that I could do it and plunged in when my wave started and kept going.

Speaking of characters and using mental images in races -- My mental image for racing is pikachu.  I even have bright yellow racing shoes (my "pika-shoes").  Round little thunder rat that can create some serious damage.

I need to find something motivating like that.  Something small I can tape to the top tube on the bike, so when you are not feeling so motivated, you can look down and find some inspiration.  That's cool Kelly.

Anyone else do this?

My first tri, I wrote the initials of two people I was racing "for" on my arms. They were one of the reasons I got started anyway and I was raising some money to fight cancer.

I probably shouldn't have gone on this long ride today, with a race Sunday, but the weather was too nice.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/83707865

Headed out for a 38 miler and enjoyed almost every minute of it. Hadn't planned to go that far, so I didn't bring a lot of water with me, but it was fun.

umm...ok, are wetsuits supposed to feel like they're choking you?  I got mine in the mail, and I'm certain I ordered the right size.  One size up would be a large (I'm a medium long), and that would be much too big.  Anyone?  I felt like I couldn't breathe when I tried it on.

Chances are you haven't put it on correctly. You really need to work it up your legs and give yourself a neoprene wedgie, if you get my drift. If it's too low on, it will pull at the neck.

Wetsuits are going to feel tight around the neck (and it should feel tight all over when you put it on on dry land).  Once you get wet and get horizontal (that sounds a little strange) the fit should be better.  However, some wetsuits have higher necks than others and some people dont do well with the high neck.  Also some, generally speaking the more expensive the wetsuit, the more flexible the neoprene, so a less expensive wetsuit is going to feel more restrictive.

What kind of wetsuit did you get?

X2 on Brian's point as well.  Its like pulling on a pair of pantyhose (or as Shaun says, there's no ball room in a wetsuit).

Also when you get in the water before the race to warm up dunk down and pull the neck to let the water inside-it will decrease the pressure. It is cold for a minute, but you warm up just fine.

Nice on the 38 miles.  i hope to do close to that tomorrow.  It's been an off week for me with kids sports and work.

I ended up getting an Xterra, as 3 out of 4 of my races will not be wetsuit legal.  I'll probably fork out more for a better suit next year.  My husband drew the line here.  I figure he's been pretty patient thus far....

Thank you for all the responses.  I've never worn a wetsuit before, and it just felt so tight.  I hate it.  LOL

If I hike it up more, then it will come up higher on the calf.  Is that how it's supposed to be worn?

**edited to ask - what type/brand of wetsuit do you all wear?**

I have an Xterra too, and I also hate it!  It was too good of a deal to pass up.  And honestly I don't think it would matter which one I bought, I don't think I would like any wetsuit.  I've only used it once, but plan to use it in two week for a race.  It does feel very tight and restrictive.  But as already said, it will feel better once you get in the water.  And yes, when I '"hike" mine up  I do have to pull the bottom further up my shin/calves.

I bought an Xterra this year after getting a code for filling out a survey on here. Went with the Vortex 3 full suit.

I haven't been able to swim in it yet (our lakes/rivers are snow-melt fed and VERY cold). Hoping to get in an OWS sometime this month to try it out.

When I tried it on, it fit pretty good, although it is a chore to put on.

Last year in my first tri I suffered miserably on the run so I thought of my uncle and his and others fight with cancer. My thoughts were that I could not suffer nearly as much as the effort they put in fighting the disease so I refused to let myself walk!!!

I have an xterra vector pro I got last year that I am getting rid of. Bad fit for me, pull on the shoulders too much. I just today got my DeSoto black pearl (2 piece). Many wetsuits in the beginning will feel like they are choking. Part of it is getting used to wearing it. My very first time wearing a wetsuit I tried to drown myself yanking and pulling the whole time. I am sure the lifeguards were a little freaked out, but at least they were watching.

So it is likely to rain Saturday --- as much as I hope against it. What do I do different? Never run in rain, much less 13 miles.

jsklarz - 2011-05-05 8:18 PM also = once you are in the lake or ocean, dont forget to pee in your wetsuit.  that makes everything better.

Unlike peeing on the bike, which only some people do, most people pee in their wetsuits.
