scout142 - 2011-05-22 8:31 PM Did a 40 min tempo run yesterday. 10 min in Z1/2, then kicked up to mid Z3 with peaks to the top of my Z4, then 10 mins in Z2. Felt good to speed it up some. I was ready to stop at the end, but felt like I could have kept going. Don't know how far I went because I didn't buy the GARMIN . I know I finished a 5k, hilly, cross country race route, then maybe another mile or so. Then I replaced the French doors on the back of my house and knocked some other "honey-do's" off the list, yay!Did a whopping 3.4 mile bike ride this am. I overslept and that's all I had time for befor church and family stuff! New week starts tomorrow: weights in the am, bike in the pm - looking forward to trying a road bike my brother lent me....man those tires are skinny . Wish ya'll a good week!

Good for you, sounds like you are making some progress on the run. Great job! Biking, wow a whole 3.4 miles.. But at least you got out there.  Remember, my coach always tells me if I have an appointment or something in which I can't make. To always make the volume up in the Bike, not the run. So, keep that in mind. Have a great day/week of training

Scott

I'll have to keep that in mind - the part about making up volume on the bike.  Got all my planned swim and run volume in last week, but was way short on the bike; had to skip my "short" ride altogether, and  my "long" ride was, uh....well, short.

This is a recovery week for me, maybe I'll try to squeeze in a little extra bike volume to 1. make up for last week, and 2. get used to the road bike.

jimyak - 2011-05-20 6:15 AM I am able to start working out now, I'll just start slow and easy for a week or so.

Good to hear that Jimyak!  What are your workout plans for this weekend? =)

~Roland

Startng today (Mon) with a short run. I have the garmin 305 with HRM which I got from Ebay a few months ago. I paid about $90. I have been afraid of the HRM because I am sure I am overtraining for my age and fitness level but I will have more information of just where I am in my training.

Jim

Go get 'em Jim! I too was paranoid about the HRM, and a bit humbled when I finally got one and started using it. I've only used it for about 2 weeks now. Just stay positive and remember the strategy about building up your base.  Speed will come later!  Good luck getting back in the training saddle today!

What an awesome run Linda!  Congratulations.

Keep that up and you'll definitely smoke me in the run.

Today is my day of rest.  I actually had a party (for my boyfriend's birthday) last night and it was my first time drinking in over a month (since I had quit smoking) and I made it, I didn't have a cigarette.  So I was definitely happy with that.

Nice!!

Ran 9.53 this morning @9:31/mi pace and 146 average heart rate. Ran a little harder than I had planned after having two days off in a row for the first time in two months so I felt fresh. First half of the run was downhill or flat. Second half you payback the altitude and it was also more in the open with a headwind and it started raining. So although my splits were not negative it sure felt like they were and there was a reason for it. A little tight in the calves after that so I'll have to do some extra stretching tonight.

Well glad to hear that you are fine. Missed a great weekend, I think you are the 3rd Scott on the team, you're SH, There is a SF, and me SG...  I was watching out for the saabs while biking over to Plympton.

Get better soon! You're first is coming up.

Ya it was killing me not being there. I was still worried about my shoulder and made the right call but it wasn't easy. I did some side delt raises this morning to test the should and that went well. So then I did a few stroke motions with the weights as well and that was fine too. So I should be in good shape for tomorrow in masters.

yeah you were the safety topic. I'm glad it wasn't bad. You should contact John, on the BSTT forum, he's a great guy and a lawyer and seems to believe you might be able to get something out of that.

Talk about not wanting to be the center of attention for something.

I'd love to shove it up the Saab wazoo but I'm not sure if it would be worth it. I had zero medical bills, no lost wages, didn't miss work and the bike only suffered a minor fray on the back of the seat and on one of the gear levers. I don't know how the hell I made the decision in mid air to keep the bike off of the ground but I literally manipulated my body so that the bike was above my head when I rolled.

If I had hit tilted forward just a little more I would have broken my shoulder blade or collar bone for certain. If I was tilted backwards any more I hit head first and who knows.

My wife's an attorney as well I'll ask her opinion on it. If she thinks it's worth it I'll contact John and donate anything I get to charity. It would be more for bicycle safety awareness than personal profit. Oh and revenge! Yell

"be the water" Roland! I've tried flip turns, but only when I know nobody is watching . Tried one on Friday when I was doing my sprints and I bounced off the bottom, and was thinking some very colorful language as I finished that lap, LOL!

Did your butt hit the bottom??? hehehe!

I found myself doing that a few times and I think it was because I was practicing in in the 4ft depth as all the other lanes were taken.  I'm gonna try the 5ft lane next and see what happens!  Have you tried using your HRM watch while swimimng yet?  What's your average HR during your sprints? =)

Stupid question but are you allowed to do tumbleturns in swimming??

Yep!  I think so but I think our races are all in open water (OW) so we won't be using them.  As for me, I wanna learn them to better my rhythm in the pool.  I can't wait for my backordered wetsuit to come so I can get some OW practice!

I don't think you asked a stupid question btw, I believe stupid questions is the ones you don't ask.  =)

Hi Jim!  You got your Garmin 305 from eBay???  Some of my friends were telling me about trying that but I was concerned about their reliability.  I'd like to follow up with you later this week and see how well it's been working for you.  I might get one myself from eBay hehehe!

Ha, no it was my shoulder, and yes - I was in the shallow end.  When I do them in the deep end, i'm starving for air cause I dive too deep - i feel (and probably look) a little silly grasping for the surface as i resume my crawl!  I think I'll just stick to the grab the edge turn for a while!   Haven't used the HRM in the water yet, but I usually check my pulse at the end of every other sprint or so; I'm usually at 150-155 bpm.

Best

Long sprint triathlon this past weekend! Here are my results:

1000 m swim: 18:46 (woot!)

17 mile bike: 1:05:20

5k run: 33:20 (usually faster, but my legs were tired)

Overall 2 hours flat!

2nd place Athena division!

Swimming is getting better and better for me exponentially, and I see improvements in the bike and run coming. It will be about 1 month before I race again.

hell of a job! How are you feeling?  Today, I'd either go biking very high cadence or swim for 25 mins. Both will help heel the muscles and the scar tissue. Don't take the day off though...

charminchick - way to go on the tri, especially the swim.  I have a couple of extra days off this week so I'm going to the pool more to pull things together.  Keep plugging away and it will all pull together eventually.

Joy - I think you will be so far ahead of me after the swim and bike that I'll be lucky to get close enough to catch a glimpse of the back of you.  But that's ok with me.  Only goals are to NOT be rescued and to finish.

Spent the morning at the car dealership, but will be done with the old loaner.  And it has that new car smell (deep inhale).  So missed the morning bike.  Will catch up later this week.  Swimming tonight.

Just remember, someone's not going to win a sprint by the swim. But they can definitely lose it. With that being said you've made great progress. I hope you both finish within seconds of each other. Then you can have bragging rights

Click it Click it...

One thing man. On your swim, why are you wearing  your HRM? Next time, do this. Go all out for an 800 yard swim then take the time and divide by 10 which will give your time per 100 yards. When you stop swimming, just watch the swim clock, check your pulse, and count how many beats in 6 seconds and then multiply by 10, that will give you per min.  Leave everything out there. This will be your TT swim.

Now, for endurance swim's take your TT swim / 100 yards and add 10 seconds to it. This is usually your z2-z3 pace. Check your HR here as well and cross check. Same thing for recovery, take your TT Swim/ 100 yards + 15 seconds again check your HR I'm very avid in wearing a HRM you all should know that but with it sliding down on you, I feel it's more of a distraction.  let me know how it goes
