In addition to season long goals, I like to have smaller goals that are building blocks to the bigger goals.  For January, I have 4 goals for January.

1. Return to healthy eating and lose the first 10 pounds.
2. Drop body fat % by 2 - 3 %
3. Hit my training plan 100% other than workouts missed due to my travel schedule.
4. Get the run fitness back to where it was pre-injury.

Anyone else want to share their goals for the first month of the year?

1.  Eat Plant Based Foods for 85% Daily Meals
2.  Lose 1 - 2 lbs per week
3.  Execute my training program *As Written*
4.  Connect with "Upwardly Mobile" people 2x per month
5.  Get quality sleep, turn  in early, rise early
6.  Create a "Success Book" (Photos, Quotes to anchor my success)
7.  Really watch my self talk and how I speak about others
8.  Live from a place of "Possibility"
9.  Eliminate "Chatter" from my life (Live simply... streamline my life)

I have many "Mini" Goals... these are just a few that I can think of off the top of my head.  Looking forward to applying these tools for a successful and amazing 2012! ~Carla

gator22 - 2012-01-01 7:01 PM First day of paleo in the books. I feel a bit of withdrawal but not bad. Tomorrow I am starting the 5x5 strong lifts program and continuing to up the swim and bike. My starting weight is 248. I would love to see 198 by July.

Gator22 - I, too, have a weight loss goal.  On November 16th, I weighed 222.6lbs.  My goal is to lose 1 - 2 lbs per week.  My goal weight is 165lbs.  I stand 6'0".  Let's lose together! ~Carla

... my ride this morning the temp was 37.  Nearly froze before I got home.  But that's the great thing about living in the lowcountry of SC; tomorrow afternoon my ride will probably be in the high to mid 60s.  What does everyone wear for colder weather on the bike?

Living in Colorado, I feel like I can answer that question!  I wear Pearl-Izumi anfib insulated tights:

http://shop.pearlizumi.com/product.php?mode=view&pc_id=47&product_id=1578594&outlet=

Amazing warmth in 32 degree weather.  Comfortable... breathable... wind and water proof!  You can NOT go wrong with these cycling tights.

I also own a pair of Battery Operated Heated Gloves.  They are thin and can go under a cycling glove or "Lobster Glove".   This company also sells heated inner soles for your shoes.  Of course Gortex booties are a must.

Great goals posted!  There seems to be a few recurring themes.  Weight loss and training consistancy being the biggest 2.  We will just have to keep each other on track and held accountable!

Heading to the basement for a bike ride before flying to San Diego this afternoon.  I am bringing my bike gear so hopefully I can find a rental for next weekend.

Love these goals, may I steal a few of them?

My goals are pretty similar to the common theme --- stick to the training schedule and lose weight. One thing new that I'm trying this year is an Xterra triathlon, so last night I signed up for the Midwest Women's Mountain Bike Clinic in June.

Still fighting the sinus crud that so insidiously hit right after Christmas, but things seem to be improving and I was able to get a decent trainer ride and short strength session in yesterday. It's crazy windy outside (sustained winds of 30 mph) with temps in the 20s, so running outside is not in the cards. We have a couple of Christmas trees in our yard that blew in from up the street.

Looks like I'll have to fight the resolutionaries at the gym for a dreadmill.

Happy New Year, fellow mentees & mentor!

Great lists for 2012 goals.

My goals for January are centred around managing my injuries.  Will build from there.  Last year I never really got going.

So I am going to continue to cycle & try & build my run mileage for about a km/run per week & hopefully be at 10k by end January.  If OK then will extend my long runs.

Being injured also affects the "training routine" & I need to get mine back.  It used to be part of the day, it was a given.  It became  something that I hoped to get done.  This is the wrong attitude.  Hopefully will get back in the swing of it.

That's it for me!!

Goal 1 - get over my plantar fasciitis!

I have been thinking about this a lot and I have tried almost everything.  I have decided (sadly, trying not to cry) to stop all weight bearing exercises and minimize any weight on that foot (i.e. standing, walking).  I am cautiously optimistic as I decided this a few days ago and my pf seems better, also may be the stretching 17 times a day! (at least the best it has been to date). I go to the foot doc tomorrow and I know he is going to want to put me in a boot. I am thinking about just making the sacrifice and suck it up for the next 3 weeks.  If I can get over it this next month I may still be able to eek out a season this summer.  If I can't... the  last step would be surgery.

Also going to look into some ART sessions as PT is not working.

Goal 2 - Lose 15-20 pounds by September.  STARTING TODAY - WEIGHT: 156.2

Also going to look into some ART sessions as PT is not working.

What are your symptoms and what are they doing in therapy?  Have you looked at your shoes lately?  Inserts?   Have you tried a boot at night or the strassburg sock? sorry if you have answered these questions previously, I havent been good about checking in as much

I am a PT and deal with PF a lot  Let me know if I can help.  The boot isnt a bad thing- better than being casted!!

1c. Focus on technique. Focus on technique. Focus on technique, etc.

1d. Start doing group swims with tri club.

2. Increase long bike rides to 50+ miles.

Back with the coach so LT testing on the bike today.  90 mins with 2 X 20 mins all out.  Tested at 90% of my peak LT at IM time.  I'm good with that after two surgeries and about 4 weeks off and 6 weeks self coached since then.  The point is to relax late in the year and let my body heal.  I did.

Also did 1 hour of kettlebells with the personal trainer who is helping me learn.  I LOVE them.  Fast efficient strength work.

Started Paleo yesterday.  Feeling grand.  Plenty of energy so far.  Reading up on Intermittent Fasting too.  The theory is lots of good things come from fasting once in a while.  And also reducing the eating/not eating window from 12 hours/12hours to 8/16.  Looking into it as a way of boosting my fat burning machine.  Fun stuff!

Paula - I have had PF since early September.  I have orthotics and the sock. Currently doing PT, stretching, rolling, icing, ibuprofen. stopped running for good around 5 weeks ago. Every time I feel progress is being made I get set back (usually due to overexertion). I have heard that ART, Rolfing and accunpuncture help some people so that is what I am thinking of doing next. Any thoughts advice would definately be welcome!

My humble suggestion - do what the doc asks.  I've learned giving in to injuries in the short run so you can heal pays off huge dividends in the long run.  I also focused on doing what I could do with the IT which was easy spinning and swimming.  The swim got better with more time to it.

What about those things you strap on to the foot to stretch it as you sleep.  I started feeling a hint of tightness during the IM training and got one, wore it a week or so and never had more trouble.

awesome job Iceman!

The strasburg sock is awesome if you start feeling tightness in your calfs (feet) and I have noticed that my PF is better in the morning than it used to be.  However it does take about a week to get used to - I would wake up and tear the thing off for the first few nights as it felt suffocating.

Went on a training ride with my wife for our Bike Ride Across Nebraska in June. The long day of the trip will be about 80 miles, so we rode 81 miles for the first time today. Due to the distance and a 10-15 mph wind from the East, it was a tough ride with head or side winds most of the way. More details are in my training log. My wife drafts off of me, so I was pulling the entire ride. We are exhausted, but I think we did good (something I rarely say about myself)! I will say, I ran out of steam at 70 miles. Fortunately, the hills were completed and it was just a flat ride home. So, today I learned I can do a long ride and when I think my tank is empty, I am wrong! I hope your workouts have been great so far this year!

Robin, have you talked to your doc about a cortisone shot?

I was all about the ART for my ITB issues, but starting to lose some enthusiasm there.  But I know for some it has worked so it is worth a try!

Ice, I am glad that Jorge and BT's testing protocol is 1 X 20' and 1 X 5'! 2 X 20' would be extreme!  Nice work holding onto 90%!  Considering the surgery, IM recovery, etc. that is impressive!

Training Goals for 2012:

I too have similar goals as everyone else.

1) Improve my swim. 2x wk for Jan.

2) Run more frequently at least 3-4x wk  Only missing days when family or work require - not from being lazy.

3) Eat healthy.

4) Continue to log my workouts

5) Spin class or trainer.

Lose at least 5lb by end of Jan.

I cannot complain about the weather...at least no snow and 30 degrees is much better than 15, I have to credit Russ for his goals were very similar.

Ken - Very jealous of you being in San Diego, enjoy!

Yes, my wife was just griping about that.  She normally comes with me on these trips, but she has jury duty that she had already gotten out of so she decided not to make this trip.  I am actually about 45 minutes northeast of San Diego so it is usually warmer than San Diego.  Temecula is the name of the city.  Sunny and in the 80's is the forcast here for the next few days.  Hopefully I can find a bike and the good weather continues this weekend.  I think today I will run inside though, need to hit the weights first and it will still be dark.  I normally don't mind a dark run here, but I usually like to do a drive around to make sure there isn't any new construction or other obstacles.  I will do that later on.

Stay warm!

I stepped on the scale before leaving yesterday, I haven't been on them in a month or so.  Decided I wasn't going to worry about it during the holidays.  Wow!  I have a bit more work to do.  I read The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf on the way out here.  Stuck to the concept for yesterday, shouldn't be too bad while traveling, but it does take some planning.  I have done Atkins before, but Paleo isn't as close to that as I thought it would be.

Good job everyone with your goals, just one acheivable step towards accomplishing those goals each day!

Good goals Scott!

For those of you swimming, or looking to improve your swim, how have the pools been?   The last 2 or 3 weeks my pool at the Y were all but empty.  I suspect that will change or already has changed with the resolutionist!  Be patient and remember we were all there once, we just made it through!
