laser beam - 2012-01-23 8:20 AM Today marks the start day of my 20 week HIM training. I really looking forward to the challenge but still trying to figure out how to make all those trainer hours more fun. Kind of weird to think that my big/longest race of the year will be my first one. Well i guess it will make all the sprints and olympic distance races that much easier later in the summer.

When grinding out the miles on the trainer it helps to have a focus, i.e. form or cadence.  But what do I know I skipped my trainer ride last night!  I have to squeeze all the HIM swims into the weekend and I am exhausted by Sunday for my long ride.

first 20 mile week to a close.  next week i am looking at 22 and i need to add in some hiking and some biking.

Monday (work)  3 mile run

Tuesday (work) 4 mile run

Wed (work) -     hour trainer ride

Thurs                6 mile run

Friday               2 mile run and hike 5 miles

Sat                   4 mile run and trainer

Sunday             3 mile run and trainer

22 miles running (wogging)

5 mile hike (gotta get ready for the ozarks)

and 3 trainer rides... maybe 2.5 hours total.

hopefully that will bust me down a pound or so lol.... cant seem to get my weight loss in high gear.

Thing I found about running and endurance sports is they aren't great initially at helping you lose weight. Start running 60 mile weeks and through in some 10k tempos and you won't be fat. I suppose everyone has their own line with that. Unfortunately you can't start at 60 miles a week. If you want to get your weight loss go here note: may not be considered safe for work for all http://www.bodyrock.tv/Don't let the flashy pictures fool you, them are some hard workouts.

I checked out the bodyrock 30 day challenge... that looks pretty cool.  I'm going to try to get my brother on board (who's a firefighter) and who can keep up with the challenge.  It'll be good to mix in with tri training.

I got in a 2400 yd swim this morning.  Then I hit the post office and mailed my official transcripts to UT so I can officially accept the offer!

THe workout out was

2x200 warm-up

6 x (50 drill, 50 swim) with fins

3x200 free (even pace; 2 with paddles, 1 w/o)
3x200 back (build to fast by 200, all with fins)

200 warm down

Tomorrow's plan is a 45 min ride and 20 min walk

After reading the awesome swim workouts, I was inspired to try.

1x100wu at easy pace

2x100 drills (count, and catch up)

10x100.  I kept it between 1:51-2:00 for every one but #9 (2:14).  I had :30- 1:00 of rest as the set went on

Scheduled 10x50, but only did 5x50 at :53-1:00.  I threw in the towell after 5 of these.

5.5 mile run.

I feel like the speed workouts in pool will pay off over time to lower my distance swim time.  Up till now, I've always just got in and swam a moderate to low pace, but this morning could REALLY feel the diference between swimming at hard effort vs. moderate distance effort.

Hockey game tonight.  trying to limit to 3 barley pops after and early bed time.  As the years go on, I just don't recover like I used to!

I chose not to weigh in after this weekend, I'm trending in the right direction, that's good enough for now.

Thanks for posting workouts, they're very motivating to read.

Finally feeling better after 4 days of antibiotics.  I'm heading to the pool this afternoon with my sister.  I'm still working on a schedule for the rest of the week.  I just want to ease back into training this week.

Well after a hectic week, it is good to be back at it! My wife's grandmother passed away Tuesday, my wallet was stolen Wednesday and my training stalled out.

Back on the spin bike this morning. Felt great!

My half marathon is Feb. 5 in California. Actually looking forward to it! Never thought I would ever say that. Hoping my new license and credit cards show up before I leave as it is difficult to rent cars without them...

Good to see everyone getting their training in!

So I am taking a day off running. First day in 3 weeks. I had a solid 3 weeks of training with a lot of killer runs. I finished it up with a 27k run last thursday with 18k at 5:21 per km pace, which is my hoped for marathon pace. Anyways, 4 so so runs from fri-mon have convinced me I was pushing it a little hard. Got to get back to more slow and easy.

Relaxing day home with the kids as my wife decided to take a break and go to work for a day. ha. Thankfully the frigid weather has broken around here.

Of course with my wife running the half marathon with me, it is difficult to for both of us to work, train AND look after the kids. Apparently it is frowned upon to leave your kids locked in a closet with a bottle of water and a itouch...just kidding!

700yd swim complete!  It was a bit of a struggle... I could definitely tell I've been sick for a while.  I just picked up my puppy from the vet.  He was neutered and microchipped today.  Everything went well but he's exhausted.  He's curled up in my lap sleeping now.

Here's my tentative schedule for this week.

Wednesday: bike 30-45 min

Thursday: strength training

Friday: Bike 30min-1 hour

Saturday: Run 30 min

Sunday: Run and Swim

Yeah. It is a touchy topic around here. At the end of the day I spend 9-12 hours running a week. Most of that during work hours or early mornings on the weekend. It has taken a lot of persistence and selfishness on my part to make it work. I am lucky that she accepts it now. She understands better when she takes the time to do her own thing though as well, I think.

I find the 6-8 hour bike rides during IM training to be by far the biggest test that training puts on a relationship though.

Sounds like a brutal week - There are few things more nerve racking than losing your wallet.  Sounds like you could use some medicinal barley pops as well!

Two weeks to the HM - hope you are enjoying every minute of the taper!

After reading a thread about time comittment for Long course training on this site, I took the advice of posters and asked wife what she felt about me doing full IM next year.

After a good conversation, we agreed that it would be wiser to wait until my schooling (MA in Spec. ED.) is completed.  With School, work, training, hockey coaching and playing rec. league, and wife and 2 kids, life is busy.

We decided that it would be good to continue to train HIM's this year and next, and go for IM in 2014.  There are a lot of benefits I see to this as it will give me ample time to get better at Swim, Bike and Run.

Tough loss by Ravens today.  Hope to see big Blue pull it out in evening game.

Had a great time celebrating wifes B-Day.  She is my inspiration and best friend.  105 lbs. lost so far.  She's 15 lbs. away from her goal.

Kevin - You and I seem to be very similar in the goals we set for ourselves - we think big.  For me - the bigger the challenge - the greater reward.  So I get the desire to do an IM and I;ve even had thoughts of doing one in the next three years myself.  But, it sounds like you have a ton of other important things going on in your life right now... Big DH gave some good advice about the fact that no race is more impressive then another - and I think that true.  But getting your priorities right is an even bigger challenge that ultimately will yield greater rewards.  Being a great husband, father, coach, student, and teacher and balancing that with a demanding exercise schedule - now there is the real challenge.  Good luck!  Iron Man in 2014 or bust!

I was the best wife ever! Haha...My husband was in the military AND a competitive body builder for years.  He was Mr. San Diego and 2nd in the Armed Forces. We lived by the flight schedule and if he wasn't flying he was lifting!  Ok so I wasn't the best wife and fussed..only a time or two I am sure.  But now he totally gets what I am doing so my time paid off on the supportive side.  But then again I am not nearly as obsessive oops dedicated as my husband was during his training years.  Plus, it helps that he works nights and weekends, so I can train all night.  And, we have no kids at home anymore!  HUGE difference there.

Best Wife Ever - Loved reading your post/what an interesting life you lead... The whole balance thing between husband and wife is so key and I'm glad you guys get each other.  My wife and I seem to be in a different place right now.  While she is supportive in the fact that she takes our three kids to school in the morning and lets me go to the gym (and this is a daunting task on her part), she is not verbally supportive or willing to join me as I work towards a fitter life.  In January - I asked her to join me and to start working out on her own.  I did so because I not only wanted her to be healthy but also wanted her to be in a real position to hold me accountable.  We are both overweight and its hard to tell someone to go to the gym and that being 90 pounds overweight is a bad thing when you are in the same boat.  So, last night - she was upset because she felt as if I was forcing her to go to the gym, which is not what I wanted to do at all. So, I backed off and told her to only work out if she wanted to.  It's too bad because I wish we were on this journey together...  So I'm really happy for your and your hubby that you are both on the same page (and the fact that your enjoying your freedom now that the kids are gone Laughing )

David, I get what you are saying as I was the other side of the coin. I was very athletic growing up but life caught up(laziness/poor eating/drinking) and the next thing you know I was 300 lbs. My wife on the other hand was not so athletic growing up. She took up running, then she became a group fitness intstructor and now she is the group fitness coordinator at our local gym. It took a trip to the dr. and borderline cholesterol etc. and a long look at my kids who are the center of my universe to wake me up. I dropped 90+/- lbs after my brother wanted to have a 6 wk weight loss challenge May, 2010. Well I won that and decided to keep going. Spring of 2011 a friend was doing an sprint tri and I decided to tri it as well to force myself to keep on chuggin'. Did an 8k run, 3 sprint and 2 oly. I am 44 and my kids are 4 and 9. I want to stay healthy so I can be around them when they grow up. Oh yeah, I also like beer, steak and pizza so this allows me to have them in moderation...of course the beers are strictly medicinal!

Subject: RE: bigDH's accountability training -- closed -- good luck out there!

Not a great run, pretty sure lack of fuel. Last night, went from hockey practice to spin and missed supper...bad idea! Going for a long run tomorrow afternoon then it will taper next week. Looking forward to this trip. Going to find a microbrewery to celebrate my run!
