I passed the International Triathlon Coaching Association certification test yesterday. Hard test. Lots of particular anatomy questions. But got through it. Need to do a CPR course and I'm a coach. I have so much to learn. My plan is to work with my coach the rest of the year learning how he does my plan and then take on a couple of friends for free in winter to make an annual plan for them. Meanwhile I'm going to do some more courses....working with the plus sized people like I was and the older folks and see if I can help some people find the joy I've found in this lifestyle. Not doing Racine. Saved the money for the new bike. I expect that today or tomorrow. Good things happening here. Ice. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great job Deb! Finishing a marathon is a science and is very difficult to get right the first time - hell I have done 5 and still haven't figured it out. There is a such a fine balance that has to take place between, weather, nutrition, training etc... Finishing is a great accomplishment and like you said you now have a goal time to beat for the next one. I find that every marathon as I am running I curse to myslef "I WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN" but then after I finish I immediatley start thinking about what I could have done different and what I will do for the next one haha. WELCOME TO THE MARATHON CLUB!!! cheekymonkeys1 - 2012-06-11 9:31 PM Jenny - nice job on the race, well done! Now get that hip taken care of so you can kick some more butt :-) KC - glad the fall was it was not too serious. Lets hope the bike store gives the bike a clean bill of health too! My marathon went ok until I hit the issue I was most worried about - nutrition. I started flaking around mile 16/17 ish. I couldn't stand the thought of eating anything at all. Even Gatorade tasted disgusting and way too sweet. I tried some pretzels and a bite of banana, eventually I was on the move again and found a guy to run with. He was struggling too and somehow we got through the next 4 miles together at a somewhat decent pace, then we seperated. Miles 23 -26 were awful. A mix of shuffle/run/walk I wanted to run, would take a few steps and then just flake to a walk. Considering I started in the steady 10:20 range I was a bit bummed to end with an average pace of 12:23 and a time of 5:25 :-( I guess it gives me a time to beat though, right? |

There is no way to train for those distances until you do them. Now you have something to gauge things by. Did I eat enough the night before? Did I eat enough that morning? Too much? Should I hasve been eating sooner? What was I eating? Would liquid calories work better? (They do for me.) But we do this stuff and see what happens and then fine tune. Armstrong was complaining about nutrition issues since he started this year and finally got dialed in and won two. Experience is the best teacher. You finished! That is awesome! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Cheekymonkey - Congratulations on the marathon! Time doesn't matter all that matters is that you finished. Ditto to what everyone has said about it being a trial and error because it is soo true. Jenny - If I had an Aussie male pace leader I too would be following him no matter what! Scott - aka.......Coach! Congratulations! |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone! This week has been crazy at work so I haven't had much time to log on here. Jenny & Deb - awesome job on the races! Way to push through, Deb! KC - how is your hip doing?? Scott - congrats on the certification? Guess we know who to direct all questions to now Tim - good luck at the race this weekend! I'll be in WI doing the High Cliff HIM this Sat. I'm a little nervous though b/c I bought the Brooks Pure Connect (Brian - are those the same ones you got? I remember you getting one of the PureProject series but couldn't remember which?) I've used them for my last 2 'short' runs...3-4 miles yesterday and Friday...and they felt great! A little getting used to but no left knee pain during or after. Then this morning, I had an easy 30min run and used my old shoes and my knee started hurting and is still bothering me even now. So my dilemma is: do I run in my new or my old shoes for the race? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Team! I am almost done with my BDT (Big Day Training). I swam this AM, took a break to eat (and a quick nap); biked just under 70 miles; and now getting ready to try running. The ART worked GREAT on the the hip flexor, no pain there whatsoever, however now the glut hurts. Feels better after riding for the long ride, so here goes nothing! I am going to a race day nutrition seminar tonight, excited to hear about some strategies for nutrition to try. On the bike today, I did water every 5 min, perform every 15, a chomp every 30, and half of a honey stinger waffle on the hour. Seemed to go well... Happy Training! Jenny

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sounds like everyone has had some good stuff going on. Since I missed a bunch of days, I feel like I will miss something. KC (crash) seems to be dong well with training. I may get to see you in Muncie again. Cheeky finished her 1st marathon - great job! Jennifer did a great job in her race. Ice Man is an official coach now, and is sporting a new ride - fun. I am registered for a sprint tri this weekend. Same one I did last year in my 1st open water swim. I plan on killing the swim, but losing ground on the bike. With all the riding I did last year, I was pretty fast. Not anymore. Next week I am heading up to Milwaukee for the Rock N Sole 1/2. Hey Tim - is your band playing at Summerfest? Any Wisconsin RFPers running the Rock N Sole? Would be fun to see you up there. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Enjoy the Rock N Sole- did the 10k last year! I am going to Madison that day though for the WIBA (Wisconsin Brick Adventure) to preview the IMWI swim and bike courses, then Pleasant Prairie Olympic Tri the next day. Run didn't go so well...very gimpy, and felt a pulling feeling in my quad. Hip was better, seems to have moved to the quad again.

So my dilemma is: do I run in my new or my old shoes for the race? I have the Pure Connect as well. I broke them in by rotating with my regular running shoes for the first 3 times. Then, i just started wearing them for everything. I have had no negative issues with this, aas some have had from using the barefoot style shoes too quickly. I can only offer that though. i don't want to reccommend without knowing more about how you are feeling. Sorry to not have a more decisive answer for you. Good luck! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good Friday Morning Team. 1st - just in case any of you do not know - DaDooRunRun is Brian's better half and he sometimes checks in under her name Tim - Keep up the great work my friend - you are one busy boy! Jenn - nice training day - way to RFP it. Sarah - hip is fine and more importantly so is the bike Scott - just read on facebook you now own a Shiv - awesome, let me know if you love it as much as I am loving mine. OK - looks like there are a few of us racing this weekend - my count says - Tim, Sarah, Brian and myself - did I miss anyone? Stay safe and good luck this weekend everyone. New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! I know I'll need it! I didn't get out of work until 6:30 last night and had to run a few errands. By the time I got home I was so exhausted I couldn't even begin to think about packing. "Working" from home this morning to get everything packed and will be heading up to WI sometime this afternoon. It's my first race since Lake Geneva last year so I hope I remember how to transition, ha! I'm going to do some visualization exercises in the car on the way up to help. I forgot how exciting and nerve wracking these can be...I already can't find my compression sleeves! Good thing I still have the compression socks as a backup though |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good luck to Tim, KC, Sarah and Brian! Sarah, i was going to suggest that if you know the shoes you were wearing will give you issues within just a few miles, but have done a few runs in the new ones and they felt good that I personally would go with the new ones. Thats exactly the dilema i had before the marathon and i went with the new ones and am glad I did. However, is the new shoe a minimalist shoe? I know they say to go gradually with them. Thats a tricky one. Its going in knowing you 'will' be in pain from the old ones that now give you problems after just a few miles, or going in knowing that you 'might' have issues. I think id still be inclined to go with the might over the 'will'. Good luck either way. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everyone! So it's official- I have a triathlon bike!!! I decided to buy it and somewhat convinced my husband. I will post pictures when it is done- it needs new cables, cable housing, and a new crank- but when it is done, it will be sweet!! Cheekymonkey- The nutrition seminar was cool. They talked about different strategies to figure out your nutrition, including sweat rate testing. Helped me figure out that I need to change a couple things for IMWI, including getting more protein in. Today is an off day- I am looking forward to watching the Euro Cup games and heading to Polish Fest downtown- a plate full of pierogi, kielbasa, & potato pancakes sounds AMAZING right now! Happy Training and good luck to everyone racing this weekend! Jenny |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Team. Jenn - congrats on the new bike, can't wait to see it. OK - Good News from today for me 2012 Leamington Ontario Sprint Triathlon 750 Meter Swim = 17:40 20 Km bike = 36:08 5 Km run = 25:25 Total Time 1:21:57 Now are you ready for this - that is 18 minutes faster than last year Times from last year 2011 Swim 20:50 Bike 49:26 Run 29:35 Total Time 2011 1:39:50 NOW - I was not that competitive in my age group but just an FYI - very competitive race because it is the Ontario Provincial Sprint Triathlon as well as a 2013 World Sprint Triathlon Qualifying Race. Therefore, it has some amazing and competitive athletes in all categories. So - overall - I am very happy with my results. Hope everyone else had a great weekend - Tim, nice job in your event - Sarah how was your event? Brian, how did you do? Have a safe week everyone - I am up bright and early for a 3km OWS (if my ear is ok, it hurts a bit right now and I am hoping it is not getting infected.) KC Edited by kcgolf 2012-06-17 8:20 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jenny - congrats on the new bike! Very exciting. KC - awesome job on the race this weekend. Great to see how you have improved so much. Not sure if you guys saw or not but there was a Chicago area man that dies at the High Cliff triathlon that Sarah did this weekend. Midwest Sports Events puts the race on and I have done a few of their races since my place in Wisconsin is up there and I think this makes 3 people now that have died during their swims in triathlon. Really makes you wonder if it is something with the race or just really bad luck. I would assume their insurance is gonna go through the roof after. I am interested to hear from Sarah and get here thoughts on what the swim was like? I had my Olympic race in Rockford on Saturday and it went really well. I decided to race it instead of doing my Ironman pacing rehearsal and ended up taking 2nd in the 35-39AG (there was only 5 so not that big of a deal haha). In my race report I had written that I was passed at the end but the guys number must have been distorted becasue the 1st place guy beat my by about 10 minutes. Anyways I felt really strong the entire race. Here is my race report: |

New user ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey guys! Congrats on the new bike, Jenny! Can't wait to see pictures Tim/KC - awesome job on the races! Although I cut some time from my HIM last year, it was a worse race by far. I heard about the man that drowned when I got back home Saturday night. I had just started my bike when they pulled him from the water. He was only 42 years old. So sad. The articles I've read said the investigation is still ongoing but I have to think that he must've had an underlying condition that caused the incident? IDK, I'm only guessing. The swim course was a triangle shape and the water was choppy but I didn't think it was extremely terrible...until the final turn. Once I turned the final buoy, holy crap! Swimming back to shore was the worst. I had to stop a few times b/c I swallowed water. I felt like I was out there forever. I've swam in Lake Michigan when there were white caps so I've swam in worse conditions (but was able to turn around after 10 min since it wasn't a race.) I don't think Lake Winnebago was SO bad though that it should've been cancelled but that's just me. A few people in the later waves mentioned how bad the current and undertow was so the conditions may have worsened as the later waves started. There were some strong head & crosswinds during the bike and I thought there could've been 1 or 2 more aid stations. Then there was a thunderstorm during the run, which was mostly trail. At one point I think I got pelted with hail. The storm lasted no more than 5-10 minutes but I thought I'd heard emergency storm sirens far off in the distance. It seemed to pass quickly. The mosquitos came out after which really sucked. The miles were marked very poorly on the course (ie. every 2 miles or so) but the aid stations were spaced apart well and had enough gatorade, water, and ice at each one. Overall, I think it was organized just ok and leaves a lot of room for improvement. It is a 'cheaper' race so that may be a factor. I'm just finishing up my race report and should have it posted by the end of the day. Bottom line, I think I ate/drank too much before the start of the race. It doesn't seem like much but it just didn't work well with my body. It was so frustrating though b/c I'd done so well in my training, including the race rehearsals, and really thought I had the nutrition part nailed down. Another lesson learned. |

Sarah, you too did a great job it sounded like the weather conditions were not idea, among other issues but you managed to get through it. That is a big accomplishment in it own right. I am impressed with your swim time! |
