Who else is doing SOMA on Sunday? I just looked at the course map and the bike course SUCKS. Wish they could incorporate the Beeline but I'm sure they ran into permit issues with the reservation.

It's the same SOMA bike course as usual. It's the Marquee race in April that used to incorporate the Beeline. I've actually enjoyed the technical SOMA course. It's a fast course! Definately not boring...

Ill be there... Bike course is fine. It will still be fast because it is a pancake. The only issue you get is some congestion on the third lap but if you are a faster rider then you wont have any issues. The U Turns will require a little slow down but all the other turns we have done a million times with the other races and can be taken fully aero and as fast as u wanna go. From what i understand the issue with the beeline is the chevron station that has to be shut down completely for the whole race... Huge money for them to do that... so it ends up being the turn tour of tempe!

Lifetime (Red Rock) has tried to secure the Beeline as often as possible, but their negotiations with the native american tribe have not been successful. I have never heard the exact reason, but whatever it is forces the urban course that SOMA has been (and Leadman/MaRquee now is).

I am surprised at how fast SOMA is due to the number of turns, but for anyone who is racing it, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the pace you will keep.

Personally, I will be pulling people out of the water, cheering people on throughout the race, and enjoying myself laid back with my ONE peeps. That's my version of triathlon this weekend. If Elliot is not racing and shows up, I look forward to hearing all about Kona.

I've been thinking a lot about bike setup as race day nears. For the IM vets here, did you take any of your bottle cages off prior to your IM? I currently have 4 bottle cages - aero, down tube, and two behind the seat (X-Lab setup). Since there's so many aid stations on the bike course, I'm thinking of removing the rear X-Lab setup that holds two bike cages. Figure the easiest way to gain speed at this point is to ditch weight and I should be fine with two bottles on the bike (one for Infinit, other for water). Thoughts?

Been thinking the same thing Devilfan but i also want one more i think to hold a spare water for just in case cause i run hot and use a lot to keep cool by dumping it on me...but i also have the X-lab set-up and would like to shed that weight. where will you put spare tubes, CO2's etc?

On a flat course like this, weight is "almost" meaningless.

Now, the dual behind the seat hydration (which I use) is generally an aero penalty, so switching from that to a single behind the seat might be a better idea.

I keep my flat kit in one of the bottle holders in the rear setup. However, I've seen people be able to tape the entire thing under the seat. Using the aero helmet tail is another hidden storage spot.

I will be running between the bars and a single bottle behind the seat... even as a slow rider you will have water like every 45 min on the course. Flat kit is in a darkspeedworks bento and one extra tube under the seat. 2 co2 on bottle behind the seat also. never thought about the aero helmet... interesting

As of now, I'm planning on using a similar spare tube/C02 setup as Tryrn - Spare tube and CO2 in my bento box, and possibly tape an additional tube and CO2 under my seat.

Still leaning towards removing my dual X-Lab rear setup for IMAZ. I just won't need those bottles back there with all the water available on the course.

I've got the same set up. But I'm sticking with it. I will drop my 2,empty, rear bottles in my special needs bag half way through. Then jut pick up perform and water at the aid stations on the 2nd half.

I'm using the same X-Lab rear setup....Just a thought...My last couple of HIMs,I used the Gatorade twist top bottles(put my own sports drink in them, of course) so when I'm done with them, I can toss them @ an aid station. Would help with time by not not using the SN bag unless you really needed to...

Seems like a lot of us have the Aero Bottle, down Tube cage, and XLAB rear system.  I plan on loading up all four at the start of the race and utilizing the rear cages for the exact same thing you talked about in bold.  I won't worry about the weight.  I would rather be over prepared and can dump some throw away bottles if I don't think I need them.

Oh, and I'm #365!!!  (I believe they gave me a low number because I donated so much to the Ironman Foundation..... yup, frickn foundation spot).

Is it too early to start packing?
