Champion 23360 Taser-World | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread AmbulanceDriver - 2007-10-16 5:41 PM I'll try the challenge within a challenge but no promises because of bad news below.... Hi Kelley, My "challenge within the challenge" is meant to motivate people who are ready to push themselves just a bit harder. BUT, do NOT push yourself to the point of injury!!! If your calf is bothering you, by all means, just stay within your limits. It's not worth doing damage to your leg. (Believe me, I'm having a tough time taking my own advice. I WANT to swim. But I'm pretty sure that I've overstressed my rotator cuff. Even so, I still WANT to get in the pool though, and push myself through the pain. *sigh*) (And congratuluations on that previous weight loss! That's a substantial amount of weight that you took off!) Dee |

Veteran 122 Michigan | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread You guys-- I wanted to share this with you-- I started jogging/running about 4 years ago-- never stuck with it consistently but trained for various races up to 1/2 mary length-- got injured, then started in with sprint tris. Anyhow, running always felt really hard to me-- I even lost 30 lbs and my per mile time really never got better than 11 min miles. I'd get discouraged and quit, or slack off or whatever. Well..... the last few runs I took (still 11 min/mile jogs really) I figured out my gait. I tried smaller steps, consistently keeping my landing foot under my hips, rather than landing way out in front. I must have read about this about 100 times on the tri talk forum here, and never really got it. This weekend, I got it. It was so much less of a struggle, so much less discomfort. Plus, I actually felt the running in my lower abdomen and in my glutes-- when I let my hammys/glutes do the work (god knows they ought to start pulling their weight around here) they propelled me forward. So natural. Totally different than trying to grab road up front, and then expect my leg to pull the rest of me up to my landing foot. I don't know if any of this makes sense but it has made a huge difference in my last two runs. Hopefully, these kinds of changes come naturally (or at least a lot quicker!) to you all! Thanks for reading! |

I tend to take big, long steps, and I think it puts a lot of stress on my knee. Hmmmm. Thanks! I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to running..... I'm going to think about how to do this some more, and then try working on accomplishing this tomorrow. Definitely worth giving it a try.... Dee Edited by D001 2007-10-16 5:37 PM |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread If you look under the first tri section there is a link to video clips on how to run. Basically you stay fairly vertical looking at the horizon and your foot should land with a straight line between foot hip and shoulder. Heal kisses the ground roll through balls of feet. For hills slight lowering of chin but, as with biking, you are looking for faster cadence and not longer stride. Is what I got out of it still working on putting it into practice. The shoe shop I went to actually videotaped the running and gave me a shoe to promote my heal landing not being too hard and to add support so my heal to ball of foot roll is not sideways one way or the other with slight arch support. Anyway watch the video lots and it may make more sence than my rambling I'll try to find the linc a bit later. |

Expert 973 Berkeley, Calif. | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread I can't focus on my form when I'm running -- it's too distracting. I'm not knocking it, of course, and if folks are in pain then absolutely it's best to make sure they aren't doing any damage with their technique. Actually, yesterday I felt sore for the very first time from running, but I suspect that's because I ran about a half mile longer than ever before on Sunday night. It was weird because the run actually felt great. I'm not too worried because I'm just a little stiff and achy today. I'm going to run again tonight (shorter distance, though) and hope that works out some of the soreness. Hey, I had a question about the rules of this challenge. Is the winner determined by the number of participants who reach their goal, or by the totals for the group? Like, let's say the total mileage goal for our team was 200 miles. If as a group we ran 210 miles, but one of our members didn't hit his goal and another member went way over her goal, would we still be winners? It looks like that's the way it works, since we seem to be in third place based on the percentage of our total team mileage goal. But then I saw that folks aren't really allowed to "take" miles from team members who aren't hitting their targets, so I'm a little confused. (I hope this question makes sense!) |

Ok... let me try and make it simple... - No one can achieve more than 100% on this challenge so if you pledge 50 miles and run 60... you still only get credited with 100% (or 50 miles) - Team progress is calculated by the team average towards goal so the team with the highest average percentage at the end of the challenge wins

Expert 1580 Ankeny, Iowa | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Hey everyone, Well I am getting weather that is rolling in (big black clouds) with chance of severe weather again tomorrow morning and tomorrow (rain is 50-60% chance from 3am tomorrow through 8pm tomorrow night) so I ran instead of walked tonight. I got in 1.4 before it got dark (I couldn't get out to almost dark **blah**) but it was better than nothing. My lovely friend AF (sorry guys) came to visit and apparently she is ticked off about something (it is that bad ladies) but I forced out there. Dee - I would love your challenge but I am not sure if I am going to make it - hubby and I leave for Vegas on Friday through Wed of next week. While we are running two days we are there and hiking (I'm counting that for this challenge since I declared walk/run at the beginning but haven't been counting flat walks) I am not sure how much I am going to get in. That sad - you probably won't see the spreadsheet posted daily after friday afternoon until probably Monday and then probably wed next week (monday only to give our progress to Cat).
Anyway - we are doing a great job. Leaders so far: Dee - 86.2% of goal, Jason and Lyssa tied with 80% and klgray with 71.86%. Everyone is close over over 50% except Husker. I hope she posts some mileage this week - thanks to those who went to inspire her. Overall we are currently at 62.69% and another team checked in (Vampires with 51%) so we are still in third-ish place. GREAT Job Team... Keep up the good work. Stacie Well, send some of that rain this way. (Not the severe weather. Just the rain!) We could certainly use it.... "The Challenge within the challenge" is just for people who could use a little extra motivation. Some people are already maxed out on their efforts. Or maxed out with their time. But I figured that some people might enjoy that little "extra incentive." So I threw it out there. I left another inspires for Husker_Tri_Girl earlier today. I also sent her a private post, too. Like you, I hope she logs some mileage this week. Everyone on the team is doing GREAT, but she's pulling our average down. I think we should take a road trip to her house, knock on her door, and chase her around the neighborhood until she hits her run goal. (I guess that would be one way to do it!) Have a GREAT time in Vegas! Dee |

Thanks for reading! Jenna, from the bottom of my heart...THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for posting this tidbit of information!!! I ran farther today than I have in years and it felt good!!! I didn't feel like I was going to die, well maybe going uphill once I was pretty taxed, but overall this piece of advice proved to be priceless for me. I didn't think I would be able to run(okay, jog) a 5k until sometime next year, but I exceeded that today and Iam actually under the 12 min mile now and I can't even begin to tell you how good I'm feeling about myself right now. My shins don't hurt, my kness don't hurt and I finally feel like it might actually be doing my rear end some good. Again, thanks. This helped so much! For the rest of you, you may want to give this a try. I believe I can attribute the shortening of the strideand keeping my feet under my hips, instead of way out in front, is directly linked to my absence of pain tonight. You are all doing great and I'm so glad to be a part of this team! Go APPLES!!! |
