Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() barkncat - 2012-03-07 12:57 PM I had a few days off last week so decided to go up north to visit a girlfriend for a couple days. All started out good. She had a class on Fri morning so I looked up a gym near her school and she dropped me off and I did treadmill and weights while she was in class. We had a big snow storm in northern Michigan and on Sunday morning when I'm getting ready to leave for my 4 hour drive home, I get a call from the hubby saying that on Sat night while he was at work (at a hospital emergency room) he had a "cardiac event". 4 days of fussing with that is enough to make anyone rethink their eating habits. Thing is the poor guy quit smoking 12 years ago, lost 40 lbs in the last 18 months, got off most of his diabetic medications and then, has a heart attack with one artery being 90% blocked and requiring a stent to be put in. Doesn't seem fair. Today he checked out of the hospital, I took the bike off the hook in the garage, filled the tires with air and went on a 7.25 mile bike ride. I rode right past Dairy Queen and didn't even stop. Patricia Sorry to read about your husband. It sounds like he recognized some habits that needed changing and has even more motivation now I suppose. I hope he recovers well. I've read about people who alter their diets and successfully reverse cardiovascular disease. One personal example is a co-worker (young guy, late 30's) was diagnosed with a blocked artery. He's turned vegetarian overnight and is on a good track to change things for the better. Lost 20 lbs in 2 months. He's got a baby boy and I think is motivated to see him grow up. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() oak73 - 2012-03-12 4:42 PM Ok I need some advice or help, which ever you want to call it. Today was the second time I ran out side with my club, the third time I have ran not on a treadmill since I started training. Well today I am experincing some horrible pains above my ankle region, right under the tounge of the shoe all the way around the rim of the shoe. It was so bad, I had to walk most of my run today. Is this because I am not use to running on a hard surface or is this an issue with not having the proper shoe? What ever this is it has to stop. Hi, sorry to hear about the pains. Don't get discouraged. In my opinion, these things happen to all runners. The pain may be in a different area for different people, but it's like a rite of passage that you must go through. Some people figure it out and go on to bigger and better running levels and some people don't make it through. It could be shoe fit, running volume, running form, running frequency, etc, etc. The causes are so varied that it is hard to diagnose without more information, but there is always an action to take to resolve the problem. I think the key is to follow some common-sense advice about injuries and pain. I recently found this short blurb about running and pain. Maybe you'll find it useful. I did. http://running.about.com/od/injuryrecovery/f/runpain.htm Other things to consider are shoe fit. If you haven't, find a shoe store that will do a free running gait analysis to make sure you have the right kind of shoe for your personal running gait. It could also be that your shoes are tied on too tight. Or just the wrong size (too small). Experimentation over the years has been a big thing for me personally. I've gradually found what works and I do more of that and what to avoid which I do less of or eliminate. Pain is a good thing. It tells us we need to modify something. Stay after it and you'll figure out the problem. EP |

The 2 miler that became a 5k? I did the same thing. Stop running, ice, and have someone check your gait. Make sure you are taking small steps and landing on your mid-foot. Especially with heavier runners, YOU NEED TO REST MORE BETWEEN RUNS. Maximum 3 days a week and work on form and cadence. Meanwhile, swim. Swimming makes a lot of things feel better. |

New user ![]() | ![]() So, I won't say exactly that Ive fallen OFF the bandwagon...but its definately been a kinda off few weeks. I was hoping that once I got to Utah my workouts would kinda kick into full, awesome mode. I finally have access to a gym, my bike is outta storage, and hubby is home from to korea to help watch the babe... BUT...the gym with the pool is closed for renovations, Im adjusting to the high altitude, I still dont have a bike trailer, so I havent been biking, and when running the other day, something weird happened in my knee AND my jogging stroller got a flat I mean, I know these are all excuses, and I still am confident I'll get there, but it has been discouraging. So ...yea.
Plus...I love cookies way to much to go paleo lol. |

First, i went swimming yesterday instead of taking a rest day as suggested in the weekly workout. then i did 500 yds worth of kicking. When I started the TT, my glutes let me know they had gotten a bit of a workout, but it wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, a bit over a mile into it, my left glute/high hamstring started hurting and being an idiot I kept running. By mile 2 my form started to go south as a result of the hurt and my pace dropped. At 2.6 miles I had to stop. I am now limping as a result. I'm not very smart |

I took your advice and am taking a few days off to rest up my ankle problem. I am going to a running store this weekend to have a gait test done. When I bought my running shoes, I went to our local sporting goods store, told them about my knee and he recommended the shoe I bought (Asics Gell 1140). My run club director told me that was a stupid way to buy my running shoe. So hopefully this might solve the problem. |

I actually blew my first one of the season back in January. You can use a recent race result to get your VDOT for the run workouts. You probably don't need to do another 5K TT. That's what I did. I used a 5K race result from November to get my VDOT which I used for all my run workouts up until I did another 5K TT. |

But if you put your stats in the Runners World shoe finder... you'll see that we have fewer options because of weight. We wear our shoes harder and they need some more cushion. That's why trail shoes work so well for me. I use Brooks Cascadias. I still have 30lbs to lose so I know it will be a few months before I can wear lighter/normal shoes. Are you icing and stretching and being nice to yourself? foam roller? Sit on the floor and roll a tennis ball under your calf too. Ankle problems can come from above or below, front or back (shin or calf) or both! I love how you stick with this and roll with the punches... can't wait to see how you are doing in a few months!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last year, before I started all this, I did that responsible thing and got a heart/circulation work-up with the ultra-sound of the aorta etc. All good mechanically. Started feeling way too tired a few months ago and thought...what the hell I'm almost 48... so Monday I got the blood draw (passed out, threw up...my usual thing) and got the results yesterday. Blood sugar is a bit high (wtf?) and my white cell count is very low. More than one count is low. Dang. I also have some hormonal shortages. So...wake-up call. Gotta drop this weight, watch my beer/wine intake, and get some hormone creams. Also changing a few dietary things to help the white cell count. I look forward to sleeping again, regaining my strength, and being alert during the day. I'm sure everyone around me will be happier too! Maybe I'll stop recommending violence against people like 'running boy'... ok, probably not. ![]() |

New user ![]() ![]() | ![]() With a month to go till my tri I'm just trying to keep my head down and stick with my training plan. Some mornings it's tough to roll out of bed at 5 am to spin, but I'm always so glad everytime I get done with that class. It's true that the only workout you regret is the one you don't do. Now I need to get my bike out of the garage and tuned up so I can start riding "for reals". The weather here in Virginia has been gorgeous, so it's time to get outside with the workouts. We had a high of 79 (SEVENTY-NINE!) degrees yesterday. Global Warming, if loving you is wrong, I don't wanna be right... |

Swim lessons have been absolutely fantastic. I may run Saturday a bit. I've been running really well lately. - faster than ever with the run club on Wednesday night for a 10K. Nice form. 2X a week at least. Bike coach cut down from 3 runs when we started our lactate threshold work. Weight loss continues with Paleo. Strength exercises with kettlebells have been great. No complaints. |

Into week 2 of my tri program and feeling much more "in control" now that I have a schedule to follow each day. The weather is beautilful in Minnesota, broke out the bikes this week. What a difference the wind and actual hills play into your workout-I love it! Also doing the 100 pushup challenge, one week left until I take my final test to see if I can complete 100 consecutive pushups (I started at 16 pushups 5 weeks ago). Hope everyone is dong well. |

So we'll see how it goes. It's a really nice course starting in Sausalito then crossing over the Golden Gate Bridge and into SF. We run through the Marina and then over to Aquatic Park. Really nice course.... Have a nice weekend Everyone! |

Im sticking with this...Im going to cross the finish line at the tri in August even if that means using a hover-round! Failure is not an option. |
