So I was finally able to swim in my new wetsuit.  I don't know where to start - first I have to say that I was completely shocked at how easy swimming in a tri wetsuit is and how much it helps w/ bouancy and decreased drag.  I felt like I'd go 15 feet with each stroke and that I was just flying through the water.  Another surprise was the warmth created by the suit (and no, I didn't warm it myself if you know what I mean).  I knew it would help some, but I actually had to let some fresh water in a couple times to cool down.  Lastly I was surprised at how straight I was swimming without the line on the bottom of the pool.  I'd sight every third breath on the left, breathing bilaterally and only had to make adjustments a couple times - granted we didn't swim super far, but still.

I guestimated the time/distance (conservatively) as I forgot my watch and I was swimming w/ a friend who is not as strong a swimmer and needed some coaching.

I'm stoked on the wetsuit and am now feeling very confident about my first race on the 12th.

Very cool.  I plan on buying one over the winter as all the swims I have left this year will either be too warm for them or in a pool.

swbkrun - 2008-07-02 11:16 PM I to am sign up...  I  think if over estimated my goal... W/ a 1/2 Ironman in 2 weeks there will be some taper time (not much), and some recovery time (also not much)... The 1/2 Iron is training for the full....

Which 1/2 are you doing?  My wife and I are looking for one to do next year, probably going to make a trip out of it.

I am doing a race called Chelanman!

www.chelanman.com

It is a really neat area.... The lake is 55 miles long, second deepest in the US, surrounded by mountains (all the way around it), and warm as heck this time of year..... It is the perfect training for me (heat wise) for Ironman Canada... I don't do well in the heat, and have been working on it the last 3 years...

Matt,

I'm sure you've told us this before, but what kind of wetsuit did you get?  I too want to get one in the fall/winter.  Maybe Santa will be good to me.  Let's see, Doug (my husband) wants some ZIPPS and I want a wetsuit........... I think I have a much better chance of having my stocking filled with what I am asking for.  Doug's a good boy and all but......................................... $1800 for a pair of wheels is not what I had in mind.  Maybe Santa will lend him Rudolph instead

I picked up a Neosport fullsuit on ebay.  It was new, just last year's model and only cost $119 + shipping.  The reatailer was ebikediscount and they had several options for suits in each size.  Their sizing chart was spot on and they shipped really quickly.

Steve,

Chelanman loooks like a cool multisport weekend, I'm thinking that will be on the calendar for next year.  You'll definitely get some work in the heat over there.  I was in Spokane last week and it was 85* by 10am.

Yeah but you both get the benefit of using the wheels, if you both have Shimano, Campy, etc... So that may be a good gift for you as well?!!!

Hush Steve, my husband reads these as well    He's now running around the house saying, "I like this Steve guy, that is a great idea." The problem is we both race at the same time, so who gets them on race day?  Me of course!!!  Standing rule of wives, IF THERE IS ONE OF ANYTHING GOOD, WE GET IT!

Hey I know that rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It works in our house to. Actually its if my wife likes it she gets it. If my daughter likes it she gets it. If my grandaughter likes it she trunps everyone and she gets it. I just hide stuff in the garage. No one but me will go out there.

Had a good work out today. 10.7 miels on the bike 35 minutes followed by 5k run in 26.53. I did the first 2.5 K in 13:52 so the second 2.5 was in 13:01.

Yeah, we went through the same situation.... All you do is each have your own "A" race!! Then they get the wheels for that particular race... Then wifey get's them at all others!

They are super easy to interchange however, so it is not a big deal!

ON A SIDE NOTE---- EVERYONE HAVE A GREAT LONG WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!!

Pretty much the same order of priority in our house, minus the grandchildren.

Nice workout there, Mr. Knight.

Saturday I'm hoping to ride the course of my race next weekend.  Might be tough, given that we have family coming into town for my daughter's birthday tomorrow.

Have a fun, safe long weekend everyone!

Well I hope you all have a great 4th of July Long weekend this weekend. We had our Canada day on the 1st so it has been a short week as I took monday off and tomorrow is the start of the Calgary Stampede and our company gave us the day off to watch the stampede parade (a tradition with most companies in Calgary). however I am partaking in none of it as I am starting 20 days of long over due holidays and the family and I are headed to cottage country in nothern saskatchewan to hang out at the lake, do some beaching, some fishing and maybe some waterskiing, oh and some OWS. I can't wait. I am taking all my gear including my wetsuit and bike so hopefully I can still get all my training in. There are a few long rides I would like to do while I am there.

Anyway I'll be in and out of contact for the next couple of weeks so you all have fun!

Just got back from a 4 mile race with the DC Road Runner Club.

I ran an 8:49 pace, I can't believe it.  I usually run on my workouts maybe 9:45 at best which also tends to be my pace in Triathlons as well.

I felt really good the whole time, funny though for me that was 1 minute faster than my normal pace but I got completely dusted.  There were some people out there that were flying.

Maybe some of this run training is finally paying off.

Training is already paying off... You were able to run a faster pace the normal.....And if I recall a few months back you were running 10+ minute miles.... So in my eyes you have come a long way!  Congrats!

That's wonderful.  I am working my butt off to break a ten minute mile.  I'll start off my runs close, and then I fall apart. Glad to hear there is hope in the future. You are an inspiration. Great job!!!

I have been through a few training plans so far, and like the running portion of this sprint -> olympic plan.

Good mix of speed, tempo and recovery runs.  From everything I have read though you should do most of your runs slower than you would run in a race.  I am much more sore this morning than I would normally be from a 4 mile run.  I ran most of the race in Zone 4 and a bit in Zone 5.  I try to keep most of my training runs in Zone 1 & 2 since I usually try to work out 2x day 6 days a week.

I took Saturday off from training and went to the Italian Canadian Festival here in town. Had a few too many wobbly pops. Woke up with a small headache today so I thought a quick wokout would clear the cobwebs. Went to the local club and proceeded to do a 40 Km bike ride. I don't have the headache any more but I'm sure I lost a few pounds sweating.

Always nice to sweat out some alcohol.

Busy weekend for me, Race Friday 75 minute ride and 50 minute swim yesterday and 60 minute ride/20 minute run (brick) today.

Now I am off to go see Wall-e with the kids and gain some weight back eating popcorn!

I did a 40 K bike on Sunday and a 1000 meter swim yesterday. Hoping to be able to put together an oly distance effort before the end of the year even if I can't get into a race.
