Good morning all.  Glad to hear so many of you are getting to spend time with your families!  It seems it would be more relaxing with the hustle and bustle of the holidays over.  I work with my Mom at our travel agency and with my Dad and brother at our Dive Shop, so we do lots of family time around here.

Not much going on for training.  I need so badly to run to get ready for my 1/2 mary in March, but just can't seem to find the time.  Work is crazy busy, so I don't get outta here til the sun's gone down.

Anywho, hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Dive shop in Arkansas?  Where do people dive around there?  Forgive me, I don't know too much about Arkansas!

It's a beautifu state!  We have lots of fresh water lakes that have pretty good viz.  Many are in the mountians and just beautiful!  Spear fishing is still legal here, so that generates some business.  Greers Freey Lake is where we do our open waters.  The NW part of the state is mountains and the SE portion of the state is delta.  Lots of cotton, rice and beans.  We have it all

Oh, I forgot! So, I had this conference this weekend and we had one 2 hour lecture called "The Healthy Aging Brain"...it was my favorite lecture and it reiterated with true scientific data what I have been espousing to patients for the past 14 years!

Thought I'd share with you since we have quite the age range here in our group.
The five important elements to keeping the aging brain healthy are:

1) Nutrition
2) Exercise
3) Challenge
4) New things (stimuli)
5) Love

This lecture was given by a neurophysiologist named Marian Diamond at UC Berkeley and she is AMAZING! 87 years old and still teaching, sharp, witty and super healthy. She is an avid swimmer and I wish I can be like her when I'm 87 years old. Anyhow, it seems like all of us here are getting all 5 by being involved in triathlon and part of this "loving" group, so that's a big plus!

Kudos to us!!!

hey all!

Life has kept me away from being active in the group lately, but things seem to have settled down into routine now. Which is kind of nice!

Just read through the last dozen or so pages, such a  great group, it's inspiring to see what everyone is doing, and I love reading through the logs! Plus, even though I've been absent, I'm still getting inspires from people, which is great! Thanks guys.

I registered a few days ago for my leg in the Canadian Death Race!! I'm a bit worried about what I've got myself into, but its got me motivated to get back into hardcore training again instead of being wishy-washy! I'm doing the fourth leg of the race which is 38km, with one mountain summit in it (mtn is 6900 ft ish)... That'll be the biggest challenge I've faced so far, but I'm feeling pretty pumped about it!

I'm going back and forth on whether or not to do a half iron this year, but I think due to travel distance req I'll probably stick to doing some olympic distance and do a half and/or a full marathon (Which I can do in town, instead of driving 5 hours!!)

I'm in a serious weather rut though!! Help! It's been solidly stuck between minus 25C (-13F)and minus 35C(-31F) for the last few weeks.. I feel like I might go crazy! It happens every year, the downfall of living so far North.. but I need to moan about it a bit. The rest of the country goes into a freeze for a few days and it make national news... we sit like this for months and no ones notices lol :-) Sob story over!! On a positive note, it's sunny.

Anyone have suggestions for somewhere warm in the states to visit for a few days?!

Happy training!

Steve...sounds like an awesome trip.  I thought you just got back from playing.  Sounds like fun though.

Stanley...great job on the brick.  I wouldn't know anything about those yet, but I am sure I will before long.

I had good intentions of running today, but Mexican food with a few adult beverages seem to have gotten in the way.  I got busy today and didn't do it this morning, and afternoons are hard to pull off.  I thought about doing a quickie when I got back from the restaurant, but figured all the jalopenos and cheese sauce might not work well, so I am taking the day off and hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

I WILL PUT IN A HARD DAY TOMORROW!

so I thought the Canadian Death race was pretty bad a@@.... but I was doing a search for races and check this bad boy out!

http://www.arcticultra.de/

This is just insanity! Races are marathon, 100MILE, 300 MILE and 430 MILES!! In the Yukon!! In the middle of winter. I mean.. I feel like I'm up for a lot of crazy races, but this... this will not be one of them!

happy new years.

this morning i did my first bike and run this year and i was barely able to finish..  I forgot how hard these are.  I've been running and then biking before this but the reverse is so much more difficult for me..  I biked for 55min and then ran 3.5miles and during the first mile running i almost fell flat on my face twice!  My legs were so wobbly and quads were pretty stiff.  I slowed down after the first 1.5 miles and felt much better but during my cool down/walk my quads started to cramp..  now i remember why i hate bike/runs more than any other combo..

I HATE BRICKS!!!!! Laughing CHEERS!

wow gone for a day and you guys have gone nuts on the posts. Was there a full moon?.
Lex and Stanley: Good to have you back and in training.
Good couple of days training. 2 hours hockey yesterday. I love hockey and hope I can play until I'm in my 80's. ( yeah yeah I know not that far away )
60 Km bike ride today and feeling great except my butt. That seat is very uncomfortable. I am beginning totally hate the stationary bike. After almost 2hours of sitting pedalling with nothing to really look at except myself in the mirror it gets boring. Thankfully I have good music. I saw the exercise room completely turnover people twice while I was riding.
Long swim comming up tomorrow.

So i've got aquestion for you guys...I've got a NEW used bike(2005 Cervelo p2). Which looks totally cool by the way. As a Newbie, I'm sure people will look at me and think I'm a ringer.Wait til they see me fall over 'cause I can't clip out!@@! Anyhow, When i get on that baby in the basement, and go down on the Aero's, it is very uncomfortable. Maybe only the gentlemen can help me out on this, if you know what i mean. I have a pretty padded seat, and i pulled off the Cervelo seat which was a brick, and put on my specialized. My seat isn't to high,'cause if i lowered it, my leg length would be too short. Thoughts??

Just "suck em' up" !!  I am teasing.... This is definitely a different feeling, and not knowing what you were riding in the past makes a difference.  It TAKES some getting use to.  Keep in mind that now you are riding a TRI specific bike and this changes your positioning dramatically.  I was finding that I was having to use the bathroom 2x on the bike in a 1/2 Ironman.  Come to find out it was just due to my saddle pushing on my "system."

Take some time see if you can't get used it to... Try out SEVERAL saddles!  Get a Proper Bike Fitting.  Invest in some REALLY GOOD bike shorts.... One's that you will use primarily on your long rides! When riding at home try and ride in your aero position as much as possible.... AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SHOW US A PICTURE OF YOUR NEW BIKE!!! Your holding out on us!

Hi Everyone

Want to come over to my house?  It is -17F without the windchill.  I was thinking of serving drinks on our patio.

I was all set to order my new bike and found out I picked a custom color, Candy Apple Red (very sweel  metallic red)! Crap, the upcharge is $815!  Do it? or apply the savings to a computrainer?  Of course, my husband would say it isn't really savings, but what does he know?

Suzy

Ah Suzy i know your pain well....Except a chinook has blown in here now...And its up to 5C or 41 F right now.  Outdoors running now!!!

And Steve, I am going to get the bike fitted properly. $100 or so seems to be the going rate. And then we'll see what type of saddle feels gooood.

Ouch!  It got all the way down to 20 here last night, but was about 40 when I went out to run this morning, so I had to put some sleeves on.

Will metallic red make you faster or just look faster??  Although there is something to be said for looking good.  If the other paint schemes are acceptable, I would probably go for the trainer, especially as much as you have to ride inside...OR GET BOTH!

We're having weird weather here too - it's 36* right now, down here at sea level.  Up at the mountain (3500 ft) it is 47* and they've lost about 2 ft of base this week.

A computrainer will make me faster and that is a good point.  Damn logic.  Anyway this is the design with the less than loveable red.  Not the right wheels or aero set up, but it is the right frame (made much smaller).

That is one sweet bike Suzie.....I'm the wrong person to ask about should you spend the extra $$$.

It's one of those things- will it make you go faster? Umm theoretically no.  But depending on how good you feel on it, maybe it will.

Colour is not really that important, but it is. Before I bought my bike,I looked at the model and saw it was available in blue and in red. I was hoping that one I was going to buy was blue. And it was. Would I have bought the red one? Probably.

Is it what you really want or need ? If you can afford it, I say do it. You can't take it with you when you go. That is how I justify my spending.
