mtntrainer - 2009-01-15 9:19 PM was having alot of anxiety last night just thinking of getting in the open water...It's silly really, I've never had a problem in the water before, especially as a child you couldn't get me out of it! Rough ocean surf and all! So what gives? Ok gotta go play with the kiddos, have a nice evening

This reads like me when I'm white water kayaking - psyching yourself out before you're even there. I'm fine if I don't think about it; just go do! Even if it's just someone taking the time to explain a good line through a rapid, it gives the "grown up" bit of my brain time to get in a tiz (Oooh, yer gonna die!" etc etc)

My advice - don't think about it - just go do it and follow someone who's been and done it before - mostly just don't think!Cool (except for cool, calm, zen thoughts!)

OWS is the best... just think that all those other people are doing it and they are fine.... think of all the laps you have swam at the pool and you will be fine.

think of ME at IMWI a mass start of 2400 people- and I swim like crap and I was fine!!   You can do it

Tammy, that sounds like a great job. I love my job in summer, hate it in winter. I grew up on my grandparents farm. Well, not really but spent as much time out there as possible. I love animals.

I got on my bike today. Gave her hell! I had a bad day at work.

Take it one song at a time.  It's suppose to be colder tomorrow than today.  Guess where I get to run 1 hour and 35 minutes?  One song at a time, one song at a time.

Yes, love the treadmill. The treadmill is a place to zone out on your run. No worries about attack dogs, crazy drivers, tripping on cracked pavement, etc. Just ... run.

Once I get into the routine of running on it, I don't mind it. In summer, I can't imagine running on the mill. In winter, I can't imagine running on the pavement.

Good luck on that run Terri!

Let me put it to you this way group....

if I can learn how to swim in open water and complete an IM swim, anyone can.  I am not fast but swim very comfortably in open water, even with 2200 of my closest friends!

Stay warm everyone!

For OWS, this may sound silly but...One of the most common panics about OWS is putting your face in the dark water.  I found that if I start about 3-4 weeks out from the OWS and close my eyes when my face is in the pool water while swimming several laps in training, that panic totally fades for me.   I also open my eyes on each breath so I can get used to seeing dark to light as I swim.  I also use this to practice sighting and open my eyes while I look up to see the end of the lane.  I practice sighting about every 4-6 strokes but keep my eyes closed while my face is in the water.  I know this sounds like it might be difficult, but strangely enough, after a lap or 2 it just comes naturally.  Of course you need to peek once in a while to see where the end of the blue line is so you don't end up with a head injury.  But most people can get a good 10-12 strokes or more in a row for each length by doing this.  It works well for me.

Another tip for OWS that works for me...before I put my face in the water, and before I put goggles on, I splash my face with the water.  This helps my face get used to the water temp before I submerge.  I found out that if I put my face in without doing that the cool water can take the wind right out of my lungs and it takes me 10-20 min to recover back to relaxed breathing.

Lastly, if panic sets in, go to your back.  Float if you can, but slow back stroke is ok too.  The main thing with all of these is to help relax your breathing and your mind for the swim.

Hope this helps somebody.

The only time I had panic set in was at the Door County tri last year. I didn't have a wetsuit on, first mistake. Then as I entered the course I was hit repeatedly by big rolling waves. I literally was gasping for air as I got pummeled by the waves.

Had I had my wetsuit on I would have been fine. You CAN NOT sink in a wetsuit. It will flip you on your back. It is like wearing a big life preserver.

It also gives you bouyance which puts you in perfect horizontal body position to swim through the water. I liken it to being like a seal. I am working on getting better horizontal body position in the water this winter and my catch. I tend to swim with straight arms and feet and legs dragging. Embarassed At least that is what the video tape showed on Tuesday. I have a lot to work on!

Yep.  It's the BT plan.  I have revised it a bit to add some swimming and biking in there and only do weights once a week.

I can TOTALLY relate... I grew up in the bayous of S La.   One winter when I was four or five I fell in the water without a life jacket, dad had to pull me out by my pigtails.  After that I was deathly afraid of water. I'd still get in the water to knee board, but ALWAYS had lifevest on, it NEVER came off (even in the boat)  Didn't really learn to swim until I took job teaching water aerobics in college (I was desperate to get foot in door for land aerobics position).  And even then I couldn't swim all the way across the pool without freaking.  So needless to say last summer was an interesting time for me.
I get through my swims by singing (usu Somewhere Over the Rainbow when I'm really nervous)  it slows my breathing down and spaces my breaths adequately.  It also gets me focused on something other than the water.
However, soemtimes I get spooked... a rock will create a "shadow" and I immediately think it's an alligator or snapping turtle (even though I live in Utah now )  Or I'll see a piece of grass swaying and think it's a snake.  My worse scenario was doing a swim with a group of ladies, my asthma was causing me to cough up phlegm and I could tell the current was picking up.  I flipped over to rest and saw the sky growing dark, storm rolling in, and a bird (which I immediately thought was a Raven, though it wasn't) circling above me.  Lucky one of the ladies that was a stronger swimmer kept circling back to pck me up and "drive" me in.

Bottomline, if scaredy cat here that jut barely learned how to really swim last Dec ('07) can do it... I'm convinced ANYONE can.

Hi Gang!!!
So Sorry I haven't been around too much.
Life is busy for me this time of year.  Works keeps me going in circles, the kids keep me going back and forth, and when I'm lucky to find the time I go up (up the mtn )

I've derailled off of my plan a little this week.  Hopefully, tomorrow I can try and get back on track.

Hi all,
Thanks for checking in on me. I am sick as a dog right now. Bronchitis is in full effect. No training going on at the moment. Between looking for a job and being sick, I need to figure out what I'm going to do and how I am going to do it. Keep training y'all and I'll be back with you soon. Spin, Spin, Swim, Swim, Kick, Kick.
