Did a bike ride today, have a short run in the morning with weights to follow. But the biggest news ever is...I registered for my very first ever race. It is called Bloomsday, and it is 7.46 miles. Not far, and some kids do it. There are even mothers with strollers. However, there are different levels. This is a run that I have always wanted to do, but usually wait until the last minute and chicken out before I register. I NOW HAVE A NUMBER!! I was really jacked at first but now I am nervous, I signed up before I thought it through----or talked to my HB.

It does NOT matter!! You are here and that is what counts....truth be told I HATE to race and would prefer not to. I only race because I feel like I "should". For me its all about the training.....

I think others are training for their first event...quite a few folks are training for their first tri.

It is an exciting time to be training for their first event. Have you selected yours?

Maybe share your thoughts about s/b/r.

Now that we are all getting to know each other better it might be insightful and helpful to others.

Good idea - I'll have to think about it more but one of the most important thing about training that I enjoy is it's time for me. I'm proud of myself for doing something to keep me healthy and provide a good role model for my girls - and students too when I was teaching.
More to follow - have a great day everyone

Congrats for signing up for your first race!  You must be sooo excited!  When is it?  And 12k is definitely FAR! My longest is 10k.  That race will be a significant accomplishment-- no need to downplay it!

Wow, one down already!  Well, since we're at about the 1/2way point, here's my update:

January's totals:
Bike:3h 29m 27s  - 50.32 Mi
Run:3h 52m 47s  - 20.75 Mi
Swim:40m  - 1800 Yd

Muscles are too fatigued from the past couple days to do anything other than swim today, but I may be able to complete another mile or *maybe* finish the swim portion today.  Looks like I'm a little behind in the biking, not too much, and the running I'm not quite halfway to the Double IM portion I want to do but my long runs will be increasing in length so it's probably on the mark if I can follow my 10k plan.  If.

I've got a 6mile run on tap for Saturday, but the projected temperatures in the Boston area for this weekend are making me weepy at the thought!  I'm going to see if the indoor track is available (usually reserved for MIT athletic teams in the eves during the week), but otherwise it'll end up being my longest dreadmill run ever!

Great job training!!!

I have two runs each 3 miles on tap Sunday for total of six as well. I've only run on the treadmill for last two weeks...annoying. Indoor track would be a great option if track isn't to small...2 Y's I go to have indoor tracks but at 12 or 17 loops per mile it hurts my knees turning so much...plus it is hot.

Thanks!  Although I had to delete your table from my post so I didn't feel belittled next to your workout times and distances Tongue out Wow - you are just amazing!

The indoor track is unfortunately only 200M (the outdoor one is fanTAStic - 400M and recently redone, but not much use now!) so 8 laps which is not great, but ok.  Everyone seems to use the outside in the opposite direction for recovery runs... and being that my regular moderate pace is about that of everyone else's recovery pace, I can get away with a lot doing *nearly* normal pace in both directions to even out.

Almost 1/2 way except for the swim...I've got a huge blister on my right foot and I'll try the 2 sock trick tomorrow and see how I feel. Off to visit family this weekend in frigid Ma. I'll bring the running stuff but we'll see. Do people have different running shoes for snow or do you just wear your regular ones? My relatives live in a rural area w/ out plow service so the roads will probably be snowy...

I'm there in the pool. Getting close on the bike and run I'll be there by next week. Nearing the half way mark. Next week is run specific so I should log lots of miles, week after is bike specific, I hope to be set for double Ironman length by the end of the month.

97.6 miles on the bike

21.3 miles on the run

13139.11 yards in the pool

I'm getting there!  Figured I'd also better shoot for double IM distance since that's the goal.  Got it in the pool, getting there on the run....long ways to go on the bike.  Guess where my limiter is!?!   Been thinking of all you folks on the east coast.....this weather must stink.  We're facing bad drought conditions, but the upside is that it's gorgeous outside.....72 already.  We won't have anything to drink come May, but we may as well enjoy the sunshine!

Legs are still real sore after 2 hard runs in 3 days, may just have to admit to hubby that he was right.  Arg.  Did a short swimand a short spin today, if they feel better tomorrow I'll get on the bike and try to go longer.  This weekend is a bust.....big, long swim meet for kids.

January's totals:
Bike:3h 23m 15s  - 51.44 Mi
Run:6h 22m 17s  - 40.05 Mi
Swim:3h 45m  - 12900 Yd
Bike Trainer:1h 00m
Skiing:11h 30m
Stair Running:20m

I’m looking for some advice. My first HIM is April 4th and I have the opportunity to do a sprint on Feb 21 and an Olympic distance race March 8th. Is this too much before my A race. Should I just race one of them? None of them?

Hey!  I'm FAR from an expert.  My first race in 10 years was 4 months ago....and I'm going from 0-IM in less than a year.  So, I'm probably a negative-expert.  However, I LOVE to compete. SO much more FUN than training.   If you are the same way, I think that either, maybe both, depending on how much effort you intend to put into them, is a good idea.  You'd have the sprint, then 2 weeks later the Olympic, then 4 weeks to recover and get ready.  I'd do it.....but you probably want to hear from someone with more sense.  GOOD LUCK!!!

I'm with Linda on this one - both on not being an expert and YEAH GO FOR IT if you like being in the field!

I've got two 10ks scheduled in the same month!  First is 2/1 and the other is two weeks later on 2/22.  And I'm really looking forward to both.  I'm sort of looking at the first one as a "dress rehearsal" for the second, but it doesn't mean I'm not going to push myself any less hard once I get out there, but if it's not feeling great I can always take it easy and just get a feel for the next one.

No matter how many times I train alone or in a group, I don't quite feel the same intensity as I do when I'm pushed by the pack and see everyone else around me that energized.  It usually gives me a little kick start to upping my training, too.  Really... it's all just training, anyhow.

I was wondering if you guys would share what you enjoy most about training and what you find hardest?

Maybe share your thoughts about s/b/r.

Now that we are all getting to know each other better it might be insightful and helpful to others.

Training for me, is MY time, if I am in my home gym, my family knows not to open the door unless they are bleeding. It is a time to clear my head because of my high stress job, and it almost becomes a healthy addiction. Training not only boosts me mentally, but physically also. Even if I do not lose gobbs of weight like I would like to, I feel better, almost thinner. What really impressess me is what our bodies are capable of doing, your head says no, but the body is able to keep going. The hardest thing for me mentally is swimming...I really hate getting wet! I can not answer the s/b/r, I can not think of what it means.
