phillybarb - 2009-02-09 8:54 AM I just got back from my doctor's appointment.  He also believes I have a torn meniscus.  I have an MRI scheduled for tomorrow morning, so I am hoping I will have a complete diagnosis by the end of the week.  The doctor did say that if I have a torn meniscus then I will have to have surgery to repair it.

Sorry to hear that Barb.  Good luck with the MRI tomorrow.

Happy monday everyone.

Yesterday I got outside for what should have been a great run... 40 degrees at 6:30AM, sun rising, etc.  Only, boy did I feel like crap for basically the entire run (started getting it together on abot muile 5), couldn't get loose HR all over the place.  Sort of annoying, such is life (I'll blame saturday's LT intervals on the treadmill).  Also got 3000 yards in the pool, so it was  a good training day albeit mentally painful.

Today I did an awesome 1/2 miler with my 5 year old daughter! I think we were doing about a 12' pace, which is pretty good when your a shade over 3 feet tall.  Of course, we needed to get ice cream after, so I guess I need to hit the trainer tonight.

Hand paddle report:  First week using hand paddles.  At Bob's suggestion I have been using them with the wrist straps off to help with hand placement.  I think where I get he most help with them is in the recovery (reseting my hand//elbow after the pull).  I am not sure if the is useful but the sets I do after paddle sets, my stroke does feel smoother.

Hope everyone else had a nice day.

I got to take advantage of some pretty nice weather too.  Upper 30's and since I waited until the afternoon, the wind here died down.  & miler outside which felt great at the time.  Today my shin muscles hurt (not shin splints, just muscle soreness on the front of my shin).  The distance wasn't excessive but was the first time running outside for about 2 months and the first time with a new pair of sneakers--so a lot of first times probably makes for sore shins.

Today's short swim I did 5 x 100's on 2:00 targeting to come in at 1:50.  The first one I went way too fast at 1:42.  Got the next two slowed to 1:48 and then the last two at 1:52.  Other then the first one, they felt pretty consistent.  Will try that again later in the week with a longer set.

I just found out that a Sprint I was planning on doing was backed up a week, and now it is 1 week before the Savageman 1/2 that I've already registered for.

Anyone have any thoughts on if I should go ahead and do the sprint anyway or bag it?  I would certainly be recovered for the race, but I'm not sure what effect it would have on my training for that week.

How do the sprint distances compare with your taper distances that week?  If the 1/2 is an important race for you, it might not be worth it.  Not so much from a recovery standpoint but from a risk of injury standpoint.

That's coming from someone who has never done any tri's so take it for what its worthSmile!

Bob - If it were me I would go ahead and do the sprint if it's a race that has a good venue and you want to do it. The last two years I have done a local sprint 1 week before the Musselman 1/2 IM and both times I said I was going to "go easy" on the sprint and both years I ended up placing 1st in AG and 3rd and 4th overall. (So much for going easy )

Did it affect my 1/2 IM? In 2007 it was my first HIM and placed 2nd in my AG and 8th overall AND pr'd my 1/2 marathon at the end of the HIM! It didn't affect my HIM in 2008 either, ended up with a PR and 1st in AG.

It probably drives Kevin (my coach) nuts but I sign up for a lot of races without really planning things out. I think I did 19 races last year. I like to race though. I enjoy the feeling of race day and seeing all the people on the course. I never put a lot of weight or pressure on one race. It's wasted energy and what matters most is that you enjoy yourself out there.

I know that's a lot of babble to say do the race if it's a race you want to do. There is always a risk of injury, whether it's training or racing so I don't believe that's a factor. I don't think it will affect your performance in the HIM as long as you convince yourself it won't.

Indeed! And note Rockin' Bob Stocks's sig line!

Sorry, can't help stalking you once in a while--especially when there's such good stuff going on in here

Thanks! Now I think I'll go ahead and do a sprintie too, at the end of the month.

My weight is down to 163, so somehow I lost weight while not exercising.

I don't have any news yet on my knee.  I had the MRI on Tuesday morning.  I took the films to the doctor's office for him to review.   Also, the MRI people said that they would send the report to the doctor later that afternoon.  I had hoped to hear something yesterday, so I better hear something today or I am going to have to call.  I am really starting to go crazy from the waiting.  My theory is that if I know, I can plan; if I don't know, I can't plan, and I really hate not having a plan!

Nice job on the weight loss Barb. I hope you hear something today about the MRI results. Sometimes you have to  press the health care system to get answers. It shouldn't take being a PITA but sometimes it just does.

Kristen - Congrats on your weight loss as well. You have been a great role model to follow for rehab. Keep up the great work and you are going to have a great season!!

Speaking of weight loss, I got an e-mail from the owner of NeverReach and she is sending out a complimentary system for me to award the weight loss winner!

Bob, you can knock me down another pound to 166 (since you put the incentive out there!)

Barb--hope you get your info from the docs today.  Good luck!

Thanks for the advice on that Sprint/Half combo.  I think I'll go ahead with the sprint.  I've done it the last two years, and since there aren't too many races that are driveable from here in the morning, I'll still take advantage of it.

Barb, definitely give the doc a call.  We don't seem to get any news from doctors unless we call them.  Hope you hear something good.

I finally heard back from the doctor.  He said that there was no definite sign of a tear.  He wants me to take it easy for 2-3 weeks (low impact, no squatting, ice often, etc.).  If it still hurts after that time, I have to go see him.  So, basically, he is saying that my knee is bruised but not visibly injured.

Since there is nothing torn, I don't think I have to worry too much about doing more damage.  At least I know I can swim and bike through the pain, which is something that I have been afraid to do for the last two weeks.  It looks like I have a bike workout tonight that I will be doing!

I have a question.  I have a road bike, but not a tri bike.  I am thinking about adding aerobars to my road bike, but have never used aerobars before.  How much harder is it to ride with aerobars than regular bars?  Is the steering harder?

Barb,

It does take a little getting used to but after a ride or two you'll have no problem. One thing that I would suggest is to change the stem to a shorter one. When I added aero bars to my road bike it had me stretched out really far when I was in aero position. Going with a shorter stem alleviated the problem.

BTW - I gained 2 mph on my average speed just by adding the aero bars!!
