Hello Manatees!

We may have a new member joining us soon--this is a special request, and a very special person who is a beginner at triathlons and that's ultimately what the Mentor program centers around

Just talked to Beth...and that part about it being COLD.....well hows about 160 but it will feel like 80.  OMG.  Should be around 25-30 when they finish.

Ronen...You have much better weather but both of you are going to do GREAT.

Hello Everyone,

Yanti was nice enough to invite me to join the group.

First, A little about myself:

I am 39 about to be 40 in April. I am married to a wonderful lady and have a great son that is 10 years old. I work in a hospital as computer support. I was in the Navy for about 6 years in the late 80’s early 90’s. So, I have traveled the pacific rim and I lived in Hawaii for 4 ½ years. (God I miss it!)

I am a total beginner to Triathlons. I live in Kentucky and have run (slowly) the Bluegrass 10k two of the last 3 years. I was active and fairly athletic when I was in high school and the Navy but never competitive. Last year I was up to 251.8 lbs and did weight watchers and started getting ready for the BG 10k and lost down to 225. After the Race I backed off and now am back up to around 240lbs. So, I have been lurking in this site for several years and I have been interested in Triathlons since I first saw them on TV thinking those were crazy people!

I guess I want to join the CRAZY people now.

I have a mountain bike and an old hybrid bike, I have a HR monitor. I know to get fitted for some running shoes, other than that any other suggestions will be most appreciated.

I will be looking at the most economically viable option for swimming in town in the next week.

I think since I really am starting from scratch again that I should begin with the couch to sprint program or something like it? Any suggestions?

Again thank you Yanti for letting me join!

Welcome, Kelly! You've joined the very best mentor group.

Since you've already got a good running background and you own a bike, then sure, the couch-to-sprint plan would be a great place to start (there's a good one on this site, as you're probably well aware).

Of course, the very first thing you should do is start using the training logs here. Then we can all follow along with your training and give you lots of support.

You'll be an official member of the CRAZY club soon enough!

Hey Kelly.  If by joining the crazies you mean starting to do triathlons then you are going to do just fine....but if you mean CRAZIES as in joining the the New Manatees....well...that is a whole 'nother level of Insane.

Welcome and we are proud to have you on board.

Quick update - and I'll have more to tell later

I finished in 2:43:21, so I was really pleased

it was beyond frigid! it was 14 when we started the race and 15 when we finished - my hair even froze!

I'm still thawing out so I probably won't post my RR until sometime tomorrow

thank you for all your warm wishes!

Congratulations Ronen and Beth....Welcome Kelly!

I just was wondering what people are finding works for them when it comes to Pre-reace.. in race... and post race nutrition/recovery
I know it can be different from one person to the next, but I thought it would be good to hear what people like

I know it can be different from one person to the next, but I thought it would be good to hear what people like

Pre-race: for a 5k or 10k, either a Clif Bar (chocolate chip or peanut butter) or a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat is my preference, plus some water and maybe Gatorade. For a half mary, the same, but I might also add a banana and I'll have a gel about 15 minutes before the start. For my marathon I had one and a half Clif Bars and some water and Gatorade, but I need to figure something else out to get more calories, I think.

In-race: For a 5k, nothing. For a 10k, usually nothing, maybe one water stop on a hot day. For a half mary, I'll switch between water and whatever energy drink is on course, plus maybe Sports Beans or a gel (I'm still figuring out what works best for me -- I suspect I'm better off just sticking with water and energy drink). For a marathon, man, I don't know. I used Sport Beans and Honey Stingers, along with water at most aid stations, but that wasn't nearly enough calories.

Post-race: Whatever the hell I want! Seriously. I usually grab a bottle of water at the finish but I don't have any appetite for 30 minutes to an hour after a race. Then I'm famished and will eat like crazy -- usually really greasy bad food. YUM.

Welcome to the crazy manatee club, Kelly. I look forward to getting to know you. Don't forget to set your training logs to public (instead of private) so we can leave you inspiring messages. That's something I didn't do when I first joined BT. *blush*
