wakehr - 2009-04-01 1:48 PM Strippers? I did find out YES there will be strippers of both genders as soon as you exit the water. One less thing to worry about.....the wetsuit of course. I definintely need to look into perscription goggles !!

Wow, I have never seen them at a race less than a HIM, and a lot of those don't have them either!  That is a huge benefit!  Last year at Lake Placid I swear that when I went to sit down my suit was off before I hit the ground!

And welcome to page 26!

In the "For What It's Worth" department:

I mentioned that I've been shanghi'd into running a leg of a marathon relay.  Based on earlier posts I went out today to see if I could actually run 6+ miles without throwing up or passing out.  I decided to go with the Galloway method of running/walking/running.  I decided to run 10 minutes, walk 1 minute, then run 10 minutes.  As it turns out, the walking worked out pretty well with the hills on the course I ran.  I had 1,719' of climb in 6.28 miles (that's 273' of climb per mile which is a BUNCH).

I ran the 6.28 miles in 51:10, for a split of 8:08/mile - including the walking.  That's after 2,000 yards of swimming.  I have no doubt I would have been much slower if I hadn't taken the walk breaks up the hills.

YMMV.  I just thought I'd pass it along.  The Hogeye Marathon is a hillly race.  From the web site:  "The marathon itself is known as one of the top 10 most difficult races because of the many rolling and steep hills the course runs through."  I don't know who rates these things but I'm a bit worried.

There's also a duathlon the following Saturday I think I'll enter.  Run 3/Ride 18/Run 3.  We'll see how it goes.  Hope everyone's training is going well.  I, for one, am having a good time at the moment.

Thanks for reminding me of what the method is called or named after!
That is a nice pace for that distance!  Especially with that much elevation gain!

Hills will always be tough, but if you are going to race on a hilly course, training on a hilly course is the best method of preperation!

Good luck with the relay!

KEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you see this...http://senecaepic.com/ ??

Let's do it and racewalk the last 13 miles!

I guess he was really working overtime, as this turned out to be an April Fools joke!!!  What a hoot! I fell for it, and didn't even give April Fools a thought until some of the cynics in Tri Talk brought up some good points!

I have a cheaper pair of cycling glasses I got from Nashbar and a pair of Oakleys.  The biggest differance is that I am always worried about losing or breaking the Oakleys and the cheaper pair, not so much.  The biggest benefit to the more expensive ones that I have noticed is that they are polarized which helps in some conditions.

I have opted after having regular sunglasses fog once during an early morning damp ride and another generic style fog last year coming out of T1 to upgrade to Native eyewear purchased at REI. I used my membership points and the outlet for a reduced price. They have been great: three different style interchangeable lenses, vented for antifogging, temple grips and they stay on your snoz without sliding. Life time warranty. I only wish it didn't have bar frame that sometimes gets in way in aero position. I understand Specialized has new one Arc II with adaptalite, no multi lenses needed that has received good reviews. Oakley and Rudy are also good choices.

Update on racewalking

I spent this last wknd at a Dave McGovern racewalking clinic. He's a competitive racewalker/coach (his PB marathon (racewalking) is 3:38). I signed up for it when I was having more knee problems, and was wondering if I would ever be able to run long distances. It was very interesting. Racewalking kind of reminds me of swimming -- you have to get the technique down first (OK, not nearly as much technique as swimming, but more to it than running). So he showed us some basics, then video'd us. Then it was back to the classroom to watch the video and have him point out mistakes and talk about how to correct them. Then back to the track to work on it. We did another video on the second day and you could see some improvement in almost everyone. He also did a test to estimate lactate threshold, and talked about training. He did convince me that racewalking has definite crosstraining benefit with running, but with MUCH less wear and tear (esp for someone my size).

I'm prob not ever going to pursue competitive racewalking, but I definitely plan to incorporate it in my training to help reduce joint wear and tear. I can't see racewalking in a sprint or Oly, but if I eventually decide to do 1/2 IM or a full IM, I could see using racewalking as an alternative to running.

I agree, the run/walk method has many followers and I use it for half and full Marys and have watched racewalkers go by me. You think hey I'll see you later but I usually never do. Jeff Galloway was our featured speaker last year at our premarathon pasta party. He had some great stories to tell about running with Pre and how much little time you lose incorporating walking into a run/walk training program....10-15 seconds for a 5:1.

Last night went out for a quick 5k run.  Started out FAST (too fast, 7:50 first mile) but decided to see how fast I could push it.

Everything was good until about a 1/2 mile from the finish when I got a horrible side cramp.  I think I did not wait long enough after eating.  Slowed down but pushed through the pain and finished a 5k in 26:59.

A training PR (heck even a race PR) for me since high school !!!

My new breathing technique seems to be working well.  I'm psyched...Without the cramp I think I might have been able to do sub 26...

Awesome!!!

I think that sometimes, especially in training, that it is tough to work hard enough to be uncomfortable or on the edge!  More mental than physical, but still difficult.  You obviously overcame that last night.  Not that I recommend doing every run at that level, but I think that every couple of weeks it helps.

Great job!

I was thinking that if you want a good deal on an expensive pair, try going to the USAT website if you are a member.  I beleive that Rudy Project has a link and occasionally they have a deal where you buy the glasses and they throw in a helmet, shirt, and a couple of other goodies.

Just a thought!

I survived my first half marathon!  1:59:50.  Yesterday my legs were tight, but today there is a nasty pain from my knee up to my inner thigh.  Not like "Oh, I need to stretch more" pain, but "something is irritated/inflamed" pain.

Anyone have a Celebrex prescription??  Aleve BURNS going down and once it's in my stomach and I've heard good things about Celebrex.

That is too bad about the pain!  Hopefully it is short term!

Congratulations on your half marathon. You ran a very good time despite your injury!  Take some rest, massage, a little stretching and tissue care.  All the best.

Very nice time for your first half mary. Congratualtions !! I've heard that "Pain is speed entering body " but why doesn't it leave after you've finished? I'm a fan of Aleve, works better for me than Ibuprofen or Tylenol...only in moderation.
