Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Glad your race went so well, Kate. As far as signing up for IMAZ, it will sell out within a day or so of registration opening and registration will open the day after the race. I too would like to see how Cali 70.3 goes before committing to an IM, but the likelihood of getting into one in 2010 is slim to nonexistent if we wait that long. The European ones don't sell out as quickly as the US ones. And that's what I remember about Cali 70.3 in 2003 - that the bike was very, very tough. I hear people talk about the race and they seem to always say that the bike is tough, but not too bad, but that isn't my recollection. But then again, if I thought the bike was brutal, but most people just think it is a tough course, I have to reassess my ability. That's why I wanted to get a bike coach to make sure that I could do it and do it well enough to have something left for the run. Chuck was pretty much OK with me doing IMAZ. At least more favorably inclined than doing an IM in Europe where you have to deal with massive logistics and jet lag and all that stuff. Plus with IMAZ there is the additional five months to train over IM Nice. I checked and it is only a six-hour drive from here to Tempe and conceivably I could go there once or twice in the upcoming year and practice on the course. How far away are you from Tempe? I think these things are harder to do than it looks like at the beginning. I have to hand it to Debb to be working on an IM and if she can do it, so can we. (Probably. Maybe.) If we have our training down solid and have a decent race in March, that gives us eight months to build on that to be able to do the IM. I feel like I could do it, but I don't have little kids at home. But you are young and you have a good cycling base and I think that helps enormously. Not trying to talk you into it, because I am not convinced yet for myself. Anyway, things to think about. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow. I kind of feel like the stars are aligning if Chuck and my man are both ok with it. That is pretty big. I work in Tempe and live 15 miles from there. (I actually live in Gilbert, Az.) Tempe is where many of the races are that I am doing now. For example, this Saturday I am doing a 2000m OWS in Tempe Town Lake. Tempe Town Lake is where the Ironman swim takes place. There would be lots of opportunities for you to come out and get some practice in on the course. My IMAZ friend just did the SOMA HIM a couple weeks ago as practice for the full. There are also a ton of Tri folks who do training rides on the bike course before the event and the run course is 3 laps around the lake. (Boring but spectator friendly) This will be interesting! I must admit that I'm more excited now then I was a few hours ago. I have my lunch with my IMAZ friend this week. I'll get some info and see what I learn. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Ladies! I do have internet access here in Aruba, but it's painfully slow unless I want to pay and we are busy sunning. swimming, walking, working out and eating that I don't have much time to check in and read up. From my quick reads it looks as if many of you are already moving on to IM training. I'm sticking to my HIM training for now. Congrats again Kate on you race, lucky you, most of us are done with out tri season and you have one every week. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning Ladies!!! Sorry I haven't been on! Apparently I've either spaced out a lot or was really busy...Ok, it was a lot of spacing out!!! Didn't do much this weekend. Got my hair cut Saturday. I had hair down to just above my shoulders and now I've got it to just below my ears! I LOVE IT! I haven't had a shorter style in over 2 years and usually I keep short style. But for the past couple of years I've kept it long just to keep it in a ponytail while I train and keep it out of my face. This is a nice change! Went to a Greek Festival Saturday night and had a gyro and split a Baklava Sundae with my friend...we didn't finish it either (thankfully...too too much!) and I washed it down with a STRONG greek coffee! No exercise this weekend and I'm cutting back on my junk consumption so I'm feeling better about that at least! Next week I see my surgeon to FINALLY get my release to start running again! I can't wait! I think I might inquire about a few private lessons at the pool to work on my swim stroke. I already know I don't rotate my body enough because at a tri-clinic I went to last winter the coach told me I "swim like a barge"..LOL. She meant that I push through the water rather than rotate or cut like a fish does...OK..thanks for THAT visual! So I think if I got someone at my gym to give me some instructions..work on that for awhile then go back for a follow up and maybe get some drills to help me out I'm hoping that will help my swim time in the HIM. Ya think? Glad to see everyone had a fun weekend! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Long time no hear Keely! Sounds like you had a good weekend. Nice hair cut and a sunday. Double treat! Go for the swim lessons. They make you feel so much more confident in the water! I think I'm going to continue mine too. Form is key and I need a lot of help. Excited to hear you are going to have an appointment soon. Hopefully you get the greenlight. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I second the swim lesson vote. I'm enjoying my classes and I think although I'm not getting much faster (yet) I can tell it's helping my technique. Most people can use swim classes IMO unless your an old pro. If I can swing one on one lessons after the new year I might take some too. Pampering yourself is good too, so yeay for the hair! I need to re-dye mine the pool does a number on it. I try and keep it sorta a red color most of the time which doesn't last long. I restarted the bike plan today now that I am set up properly It's going to be easier to tell how well I'm making progress. Moved it to the basement where it's cool and I can sweat all I want. Had an OK swim today. Run tomorrow I guess! Congrats on starting the official training plan Kate. You and Leah are going to rock the CA race! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree. Invest in swim lessons. I am thinking about taking a clinic from these people: http://www.aquaticedge.org It costs $135, but to do Total Immersion costs about $500. Granted, TI is a whole weekend rather than one night, but who really wants to spend an entire weekend on a swim clinic? I'm sick and tired of being the second slowest person in the pool. I don't know how to put a picture inside this post. I was going to show my new bathing suits. I got that Koi one like Debb posted earlier, plus a green Santa suit. I also got a swim cap that has a turtle on it and says SLOW. Can't say that I didn't give my lanemates fair warning of my speed or lack of. Splish has a lot of really cute bathing suits, but I decided that I was too old for most of them. I still managed to spend $100. I have the next two days off and am planning to get in swimming, trail running, and biking. I should have made up any missed Turkey workouts by the end of tomorrow. My cold is more or less gone and life is good. Happy training everyone. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() IT IS OFFICIAL! Ladies - I'm going to do it. I'm going to sign up for IMAZ. Leah got me fired up yesterday, so I really hashed it out today. I spoke to my husband again, my mom and some of my closest friends. Everyone thinks I have my best chance to do it in 2010. (My mom is a little worried) I will see how the 70.3 goes the end of March and work out the kinks in the following 8 months. I am going to tackle this challenge. The biggest factors that are pushing me this direction are (1) It is on my life list, (2) I will be in top shape after the HIM, (3) I have a strong support group, (4) The race will be on my home turf, and (5) I will turn 40 in 2010. What a way to bring in the big 4-0! My bro-in-law is not in . . . yet. He still has about 12 days to consider it. He has some other things on his plate so it might not be the wisest thing to do. I do think my little 25 year old tri buddy might do it. She so wants an mdot tattoo. I think she is ready to join me. Poor thing is a starving law student though. She needs a sponsor! Leah?? What you think? According to the AZ posts, the IMAZ sold out in about 2-5 hours last year. It would be quite an adventure if we could do it together. Debb, if we are Nutso to do a Half IM, what are we now???? Nutso group? Anyone else in? There is strength in numbers. We would have a year to train. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wowzooks! You ladies are way braver than I. Don't think i'll be going for the IM games just yet. I told myself 3 years of solid training/racing before even thinking about IM. So that means late 2011 at the earliest. HOWEVER... I'm totally willing to try an iron level aquavelo/bike next year - or a relay if I can find one and the timing is right. The swim/bike is not the problem, but I need an extra year or two to get up to snuff on the run... I would like to volunteer at an IM next year though! hope you all are having fun out there! kiri |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm pretty sure I'm in. But there's always the chance that I won't GET in. I think a year is enough time. At least I hope it is. |
![]() ![]() |
Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone I'll definitely take a look at lessons once I get the medical "OK"..LOL I've looked at the Total Immersion too and was like, "HOLY CRAP! That's a lot of money for swimming!" I've thought about buying the DVDs but think hands on training will be the most effective. I've seen some one day clinics that use the total immersion technique for an inexpensive fee but the drive is like 2 hours away in the Virginia area and never close to Baltimore. So if another one comes up and my schedule permits I might make the drive. At this year's Irongirl I was still a slow swimmer but in the beginning I WAS passing a few girls but I ended up getting a little off course a few times so that slowed me down when I would sight properly...duh. I was sighting off my right using the land (not smart) and when I'd get a chance to sight out my left at the buoyies I'd realize I was a little off...LOL. BUT I swam the entire 0.6 miles freestyle and only rolled on my back to adjust my goggles twice. I was very excited about that..so I felt like I was stronger just need to work on the technique then my speed! I'll have to take a look at that website and I definitely want to check out those bathing suits, they sound so cute! I may have to invest in the "Turtle" swim cap! I always wear a swim cap in the pool because of my red hair. Red dyes always have a tendency to fade and I try to savor it for as long as possible. Tonight I'll wash it and use a little bit of white vinegar because that's supposed to help keep the color, don't know if it really works but I know I've added it to laundry to prevent new jeans from bleeding..LOL!! As for a full IM I'm not looking until 2011 because I want to finish my first HIM first and in 2011 I'll turn 40 so if I'm in the shape I hope to be next year and think it's feasible I'll definitely plan for 2011!! I'll have to ask "Ironman" at my running group what he thinks. He did IM Wisconsin last year I believe, he's had too many injuries this year so I'm not sure if he has hopes to do another one or not. I just found out I've got Project Officer Training all next week...kind of excited because I'll be learning something new and taking on a new responsibility at my job..but yikes!! that also means I'll be "taking on a new responsibility" at my job!! LOL |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Congrats on making the decision Kate. I know how hard it is... I was really flipping out before IMOO registration trying to figure out if it was right or not. I think as long as you really focus on it all year you'll do awesome. I think we are just the "mixed" nuts group now. Lol. Crazy and Crazier. ![]() |

I told myself 3 years of solid training/racing before even thinking about IM. So that means late 2011 at the earliest. HOWEVER... The swim/bike is not the problem, but I need an extra year or two to get up to snuff on the run... I would like to volunteer at an IM next year though! hope you all are having fun out there! kiri I understand that volunteering at the IM you want to do is the way to guarantee that you get in. So that isn't a bad plan. I'm not sure it is bravery. There are other words that come to mind .... I did my running time trial again. Can't really compare the two times because they were done on different courses. The first time I was in San Luis Obispo by the ocean and I am pretty sure that it was flat. I did the mile in 10:32 and was quite happy with that. Last night I did the mile in 8:45, but the street tends downhill. Still, I was pleased with the time. Now, if I could only string 13 of those together, I would have my February half marathon (Surf City in Huntington Beach) nailed down. Not to mention the run portion of the HIM. My bike coach, who also gives me running workouts, doesn't seem to do strides and other types of running workouts designed to develop speed. That might be because we are still in base-building or it might be because he is primarily a bike coach. I think I will go along with the base-building strategy through the end of November and if he doesn't start doing speed workouts by then, I will. As you might recall, he is on that cross-country bike trip and will get back near the end of November. After that I will get to go on actual rides with him and think that then I will get more actual benefit from this "coaching." |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey ladies - I am still tired today but I went on a run anyway. I want to get some miles in b/c I have a 10 mile run on Sunday and I know I have to keep moving. My body feels strong and good, but I know I have to drop some more weight before the race. It will be interesting to see my weigh in tomorrow. I keep thinking about the man saying "5 pounds is like a month of training." I believe it. I'm excited about the decision to do the race but it is a little overwhelming to think about. My BIL thinks if I do the race I should find a tri training team or coach. (like Debb) I think he is right. If I spend all this time training I should do if efficently. This will be a wild year! I'm so glad Leah is going to do it with me. Leah - My AZ group said that they think the race sold out so fast was b/c they sold spots in April and November for this year's race. They think the double sales made the slots go fast after race day. Hopefully that means you won't have a problem getting a spot. Debb - This is going to be crazy!! I'm glad we will be able to watch your training. It sounds like you are going about it the right way. Kiri & Losta - We will train in 2010 and we'll root for you both when you train in 2011. Deal?? Keely - Congrats on the new job responsibility! Hopefully that means more money for fun gear! I think I am in need of the "turtle" cap too! We can all wear them with pride. I'm sleepy tonight. I'll catch you with you all later. Kate |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Deal. And I'm going to try to volunteer at one of the IMs y'all are doing - either WI or AZ - maybe AZ so I can get some sunshine in the dreary ides of november... Will have to see how the schedule plays out... I finally chatted a bit with my friend who is interested in biking this summer - looks like she won't have the time to fully commit to cross country, so I'm suggesting doing either half or round the whole of lake michigan sometime in mid-july/august. I think it would be a great substitute ride. She's doing RAGBRAI (ride across iowa) in late july, so we are still working on logistics. I've created a partial race plan for 2010 - hopefully I can sneak one more Oly in July/Aug. I'm either going to end the season with Black Diamond Half which is around Mt. Rainier in Washington or Grand Columbian which is at Grand Coulee dam in WA. If i'm ready to tackle a half by july I will consider Chelanman - also in WA - the swim is supposed to be fantastic. Also considered the closest halfs - hulaman and pacific crest - but they are RIDICULOUSLY hilly (i know i know I said embrace the hills, but...), and pac crest is both hilly, at altitude, and notoriously HOT (although the scenary is supposed to be spectacular, and it also has a 14 mile downhill - into T2) - but this is yuckville... 8 mile climb then 3 mile climb ELEVATIONS: The first climb begins just past Elk Lake resort, approximately 27 miles into the bike. Just north of Elk Lake you will begin to climb for approximately 650 ft, passing Devils Lake before reaching a flat spot, then climb again to Todd Lake (elev. 6,150 ft). You will experience another flat spot, at about the 35-mile mark, before the final climb to the entrance of Mt. Bachelor (6,500 ft, about 38 miles into the ride). You will then enjoy a 14 mile + downhill ride, the first 2.5 miles being steep with a sharp 90 degree turn onto FS Hwy 45 (*see caution note below)." ![]() ![]() ![]() 2010 tentative schedule 1. HFAC Sprint (april) 2. Wildflower Oly (may) ? 3. Hagg Lake OWS 2000m - maybe 4000m (may) 4. Blue Lake Oly (june) 5. jul/aug TBD; bike across us? 6. Black Diamond Half (sep) As of this morning I was 224 which is -45 pounds! yay. Let's see if i'm still there tomorrow morning... kiri ~ AZ Sunshine ~ - 2009-11-10 11:04 PM Kiri & Losta - We will train in 2010 and we'll root for you both when you train in 2011. Deal?? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a doctor's appointment this morning for my "Well Woman Exam." I will get to find out if a year of no sugar and no processed foods and this very pure way I have been eating has paid off in lower cholesterol and the rest of the numbers. And I will get chewed out because I didn't get in my colonoscopy. Oh well. She will give me another referral and I suppose I ought to call and make the appointment today. And I will go on a bike ride after. I have the day off for Veteran's Day. I do intend to try to register for IMAZ the very second registration opens. Along with everyone else that wants to get in. Have a good day. Now I am off to Crossfit. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Leah and Kate - As long as your online registering when it opens you'll probably get in fine. All the races this year have been open at least 2 hours online. Mine was 24hrs. "Debb - This is going to be crazy!! I'm glad we will be able to watch your training. It sounds like you are going about it the right way" Yeah and maybe being the guinea pig you can learn from my mistakes. Hehe. That's cool though... because I can learn from you guys w/ your half IMs. Kir - I've heard of ragbri. My group coach did it last year and a handful of years before that. Going round Lake M. sounds cool but makes me wonder what roads would be safe enough to do that? Is there a known route? If you guys do end up doing 2011 maybe some of us will be racing that year too. Either for revenge on IM or just cause we loved it in 2010. Keel - Hows it going? Did you start running yet? Do you plan on using the workout logs here so we can leave you messages? Wonder when Joblin gets back? Oh yeah and weigh in. 193. Mostly due to my lower activity last week post-15k and the fact that several days I didn't write it all down. Writing it down is pretty essential! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WEIGH DAY!! I'm 190.8. I like it!! If I could get my eating under control I could do so much better. Leah - Good luck at your appointment. I hope you get good news and don't get chewed out too bad. You can't miss tests Leah! You need to take care of yourself! Can you believe we are going to do this?? Kiri - HOORAY! I love race planning. I'll check out your races later today. Sounds like you have some good options. There is also a HIM in Arizona the end of October called SOMA. I'm going to see if Leah wants to do that as training for the full IM. Yes, sound like we all need to Embrace the Hills! It would be nice to have you at one of our Ironman races. I think we will need all the support we can get. I have a full day with my mom and kids. We are working on some organization projects for all of our sports gear. I'm going to do a 90 minute bike ride later in the day as well. Check in with you all later. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Joblin doesn't get back for another couple weeks. She has left Florida and is now on a 2-week crusie with no internet access. I weighed myself this morning at 137.9. Outrageous. I know it won't be that at the doctor's office, but I sure wish it would. Just remember ladies, I was once where you are and I do understand. Run more and eat less. And eat less processed food. I am convinced, absolutely convinced, that what is wrong with the health care system in this country has to do with the food we eat, not so much how much food we eat, but WHAT we are eating. If we fixed that, I think the health care system would fix itself. I have zippo interest in spending billions and trillions of dollars to fix the wrong thing. I read that we (the United States) spend a lot less on food than other industrialized nations, but more on health care. Is that screwy or what? If we quit subsidizing corn and other grains and had the price of our food reflect its actual cost, that would be a start in the right direction. OK. I am stepping off the soapbox and finishing up a bit of laundry and then off to the doctor. |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 224 still today - -2 from last week! yay! and -45 pounds since I started. Upping the protein % of my diet last week really helped kick start something. Also weirdly connected something in my brain so i'm looking at what goes into my mouth differently - don't know exactly how to describe it as I've been a pretty clean eater for a while now... Now let's see what adding a day or two of weights does. Great job ladies, keep it up! |
![]() ![]() |
Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So, I've been to the doctor. She kept looking at last year's blood panel and this year's and saying, "Wow, look at that. Wow, look at that." Etc. Last Year This Year weight 158 139 cholesterol 217 201 good cholesterol 62 91 bad cholesterol 137 99 (she was particularly pleased about this and the triglycerides) triglycerides 91 54 So, this was an excellent result. A tribute to clean living, good eating, and lots of exercise. There was one funny thing - my potassium level was high. She asked me if I ate a lot of bananas. I don't. I eat some bananas, but not excessive. The doctor didn't get too excited about my high potassium. I've been having lots of cramps, mostly in my feet, some in my calves and some in my hamstrings, so I asked about it. She told me that she had heard that if you put a bar of soap in you bed, this will cure camps. She acknowledged that it makes no sense, but that she had at least six patients who swore that it worked. So, I guess I will also give that a try, but please don't let it get out in my professional community as I think I would be a laughingstock. The doctor also mentioned zinc and I am also going to try that, so if my cramps go away, we will never REALLY know whether it was the soap in the bed or the zinc. |
