Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Marianne... So sorry to read about your back and I'm sending tons of healing vibes your way for a speedy recovery. Kevin... I feel for you as my achille's is also not up to par. I hope it gets better and that you will not have to wait another couple of months... I swam 1750m last night and I'm kind of paying for it this morning. My lungs, chest and airways are constricted and this hurts my mid torso, from the chest to the back. I was planning on a 30 minute dreadmill run today but I will put that one on hold until tomorrow if my body doesn't cooperate by mid-afternoon. I also went for physio this morning, haven't been in for the past two weeks. Felt good to have heat, current and massage done on my foot! As I mentioned before, the Strassburg sock helps aleviate the stiffness and soreness in foot and calf a great deal but that alone won't do it. I still stretch my calf and foot muscles extensively, have contrast baths, and use ice and the foam roller regularly. Helen, Kevin... Are you two thinking of doing the Rideau Lakes tour? I am definitely in for the 2 x 100km ride. I have some friends who will be joining me for that one as well as some others who will do the 2 x 177km ride. Edited by Nats 2010-01-05 10:26 AM |

I will probably due some easy stretching yoga tonight, then I'll hit the chlorine puddle for a bit tonight too. My achilles is giving me H-E-Double Hockey sticks today for that spin yesterday. I'm hoping some cold therapy and yoga will calm it down... other wise, I'm s-o-l for another couple months. Sorry to hear that the achilles has flared up. I agree with Helen. Why no MRI? Ok... this is Canada... and as Helen well knows, an MRI would take 6 months or longer to book. I have had an U/S (ultra sound) and it showed a typical achilles tendonitis patch. I'm already booked for a follow-up U/S in February as requested by the Dr. My therapist says my calf/achilles is MUCH looser then she's felt it in a long time. So, that's a positive of the yoga. I must ice more I think... but other then that there is very little that can be done. My BFF (who is a LONG time PT) looked at it briefly the other week and concurs with all assessments and was not in the slightest worried. As this is the second occurrence of tendonitis, it's going to take longer to heal, and I will just have to be patient. It does not adversely affect my normal life, I just can't train like I want to. So... all things considered, an MRI is not something I want to pursue at this time. Maybe after the second U/S I'll consider nagging for it... but for now I have better things to do then nag the medical system. Too bad you were not here Kevin....I would sneak you into my hospital to get it done quickly! It is one of the FEW perks i have developed after slaving away there for 24 (!) years......they give preferential treatment to staff for MRI's. But yes Kevin....you are sadly correct. My friend actually waited 13 months for her MRI. But its just something to think about. I mean if they book it and you are all better by the time the date arrives then no harm done. And you WILL BE BETTER SOON!!!!!!! Have they given you any indication as to WHY you have developed this injury twice? Is it a biomechanical issue? |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ahhhh....I forgot about the socialized medicine up north. So, it makes total sense. And, again I agree with Helen. Why not schedule one? If it's better, cancel. No harm; no foul. I have always used LSD on the weekends. It works. It will also help your "speed" on shorter runs. I have also read several articles about doing back to back moderate distance runs. The example given was doing a 6-8 miles on Sunday afternoon and then repeating the distance on Monday morning. The theory is you gain the beneift of an LSD because you are running in a fatigued state without having to do the distance in one day. The only thing I question is the potential for injury due to running while fatigued. Form has tendency to break down.

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Whew - it's hard to keep up with you guys! Sorry to hear about the back, Marianne - take care! FWIW - I have to agree with the necessity of long runs. I do runs of up to 12mi when I am training for halfs, even though the training plan I follow only goes to 10 - for me it's mental. If I can do 12, I can do 13. When I did my only-so-far mary, I got hurt and didn't get the long runs in that I should have...and it totally messed with my head during the race (not to mention how much my knee hurt). |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, so I don't mean to be judgmental, but who runs out of gas nowadays??? All of the cars have indicators and they're generally reliable. I'm in a mood, because I was supposed to strength train last night while Elder Monkey was in piano lessons...but her piano teacher ran out of gas on the way to the Y, so I didn't get to workout. GRRRR. ![]() |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last time I looked, this thread was on page 23. Now on 26! wow!!!! I was supposed to ride this morning and run tonite, but I slept in. I worked from 7a to 10p yesterday so I guess I was tired. Will try to do the run and the ride tonite. Marianne---hope you are feeling better soon. For what it is worth, i did my last half-mary 3 weeks ago and my longest run was 8 miles. I DO NOT recommend that!!! I finished and I ran the whole thing BUT the race became a sufferfest after mile 10. I know. I know. I could have walked that last three miles and believe me, I am the first one to walk. I usually walk a lot. But I was so close to running the whole thing that i decided to suffer through the rest. I am glad I did and very lucky not to get injured. What I will say helped is that all my long training runs were sloooooow. I mean sllloooooooow. And I always felt I could run another couple of miles after my long run. That's how I ran my race. Speaking of half mary, I am doing my first half ironman this fall. What has everyone's longest training run been while training for a half-ironman? Also, one of my new year's resolutions is to eat out less. That's a nice goal but would like to put some teeth in it so to speak! LOL! As a general ballpark number, how often do you eat out each week? When I told my significant other of my resolution, my significant other wanted to know if we order and bring it home, is that still eating out!! Thanks! |

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can remember. I'll ask her for the recipe and I'll post it later. (she's on nights and is sleeping right now). Served warm with milk, it's truly scrumptious. And i ran 18-20k many MANY times as well. And I would like to be able to tell you that because of all this wise preparation on my part the HIM run was a breeze......but umm....twas not the case. I kind of like to blame in on the fact that it was in the upper 90's with probably about 95% humidity. But man oh man that run was hard. It was a full 22 minutes longer than my standalone half mary time. I also regularly overdistanced the bike. I rode a lot. Then I rode some more.....then some more....and just to be sure even more. My bike fitness was NOT the issue. So....run lots....and ride lots. Gee I am brillliant!! ![]() |

As a general ballpark number, how often do you eat out each week? When I told my significant other of my resolution, my significant other wanted to know if we order and bring it home, is that still eating out!! Thanks! Let me tell you bout my huge mistake for my first HIM, My longest run was 16 miles ... a couple of times,, every weekend I was doing at least 12mile runs for the last two months of my HIM training.. My HIM was in Oct and I was doing my local marathon in December after not getting in to a marathon in Oct. Needless to say I was running lots that year for a marathon PR ( only to trip on one of my dogs a week before and injure my leg). I'm usually a good swimmer, and so so biker, but I was sure I'd come off the bike and crush the run since my run endurance was outstanding.. ![]() I sucked big time.. ![]() I wasn't trained enough on the bike to be able to use any of that run fitness, plus didn't eat all of my planned nutrition on the bike either, and had horrid run. It just sucked, right about oh I think mile .75 I wondered why I couldn't get my legs to turnover, at the first aid station (mile 1) I walked it and could never really get running again until 4-5 miles and lots of gu's later. after that I completely understood when more experienced people would say to bike, bike and bike some more. I'm doing a HIM this april that I know I won't be trained well enough to really race, but enough to finish strong enough to hit up the beer tent. Most likely my longest run will be around 10-11 miles, but I hope to have many 3-4 hour rides bike rides Edited by Gaarryy 2010-01-05 9:56 PM |

I don't know what's normal, but we eat out as a family 2x a week, usually on Friday and Saturday evenings. I also go out for lunch with my colleagues about 1x a week. The rest of the time I brown bag it and/or cook. (We consider take out eating out, but that's just us.) |

OK I am VERY interested in this!!! Sweetums? Are you awake my dear?? Hey Helen... she was too busy/distracted tonight to get around to it... so she sent it to me to send to you. This recipe is off of the crockpot365 website.... so if you want the unaltered version check it out on that site. Pasted from <http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/2008/06/crockpot-breakfast-risotto.html> INGREDIENTS Optional: You may add raisins, or dried cranberries, or what ever dried fruit you like into this recipe as well. The Directions. I used a 4 qt round crockpot for this dish. Serve hot with milk or plain, if you wish. Is also yummy with vanilla ice cream as a dessert. So I tried this! Actually found it on the 365 blog before you posted this Kevin....... My verdict? It IS yummy! One son loved it...the other son hated it (but he hates everything). DH of course would not go near it with a ten foot pole....as he also hates EVERYTHING. I put it all in the crockpot at around 11 pm and put it on high for 6 or so hours. My crockpot will then go into a "keep warm" mode. I did find that it had dried out quite a bit. Next time I will try cooking it on low instead. But mixed with milk.........very very good. I will do this one again.....and try playing with it a little. Maybe just maybe I CAN fall in love with my crockpot! |
