Morning Neal - found your blog on the listing and glad you are able to run - remember to take it easy.  Better to run 1 mile for 30 days than 0 miles for 60 days right!

You're totally right.  Baby steps at this point.  I still have several months before the first race so no need to rush things

Morning Ghoulies!

Sorry that so many have boring meetings today.  Hope you can keep yourselves amused!

I have a slow work day today, so I get to bum around the house a little longer and then go for a run this afternoon.  I think that I will run around the lake.  It is right across from work and has a nice  path that is lightly graveled.  It makes a nice pretty run.  It is 3.5 miles around with mile markers every 1/2 mile.  It is also broken into 4 sections where there is a bridge across the lake, so that you can do shorter distances.  I think that I will do 5-6 miles this afternoon.  It will probably be raining but will be up around 50* so no problem.

Morning gang.  Been a crazy week so far at work, but today promises to be quiet.  I might actually be able to think and get some work done.  Will check in on the village though from time to time.

ironannekidd - 2010-01-13 7:27 AM I had such a SUCKTASTIC day yesterday I decided to do something for myself today.

I signed up for the Pittsburgh HM on May 2nd.

I had seriously considered the United HM in NJ on April 18th, but that date didn't work for me. Nephews first birthday party outranks my desire to run.

I also decided I am going to do the Olympic distance at Black Bear. When I get back from AZ I will register for that.

I think my year will look like 1 Sprint, 2 Oly's, 2 HM's and 1 FULL MARATHON to wrap up the year. I want to do the Marine Corps Marathon next October.

I started looking at HIM's for next summer already. Is it too early to be planning for 2011? I mean I've already got IM China 2012 on the calendar...

Nothing like some race planning to make up for a crappy day!  Sorry you're not coming to Jersey (Casa de Carroll had a lovely guest room reserved for you), but glad you found another HM.  Maybe the queen can show you the sights in the 'burgh.  And WHOOHOO on taking the leap at Black Bear!

Keep us posted on what HIM's you're considering. If I can get some swim mojo, I'm going to add that to my 2011 schedule.

I think that I am going to go to Portland either this weekend or next.  I am going to a Tri Sports shop.  I need to get a tri outfit to race in.  How exciting!       I have been reluctant to buy a tri - specific outfit over the internet without actually trying it on.

I also want to check out what other gear they may have.

Just thinking outloud..... (or on line)....

I have my goggles, and a cap (or are they provided at an event?).  I need a tri outfit to s/b/r in.
The first two events I am considering are in the pool so no wetsuit.

I will bike in my running shoes on my old casual rider bike.  I have my helmet and end caps on the handlebars.  Anything else?

I need to look into doing something with the pedals ...   straps, cages, ... something.
Should I bother taking the kickstand off?  Won't make a difference to my slow speed but would be one less thing that might be a hang-up.
There are no fenders.  Is it worth putting narrower tires on?  The ones on it are 26 x 1.95......
I don't want to do too much to this old bike... rather save for something different!

Running... tri outfit and shoes.  Do I need a race belt for the number?  The events are sprints so I am not planning to bother with fuel etc.

Hmmm..... any suggestions?  Smile

The first two events I am considering are in the pool so no wetsuit.  Cap provided by race director.  I bring a 2nd pair of goggles as back up, but have been called Mary Poppins because of all the stuff in my bag.

I will bike in my running shoes on my old casual rider bike.  I have my helmet and end caps on the handlebars.  Anything else?  I always wear sunglasses to protect my eyes.  I also wear gloves, even on a sprint only as a precaution in case of a fall.

I need to look into doing something with the pedals ...   straps, cages, ... something.   Maybe cages.  Easy to put on and easy to take off if you don't like them. I'd wait for clipless until you upgrade the bike.  In any case, only race on what you train on.
Should I bother taking the kickstand off?  Won't make a difference to my slow speed but would be one less thing that might be a hang-up.  Do you like using the kickstand when you are using the bike normally...ie riding to the store or whatever? If so, leave it on.  If not, take it off if you want.  You won't be the only person who has a bike with a kickstand.
There are no fenders.  Is it worth putting narrower tires on?  The ones on it are 26 x 1.95......
I don't want to do too much to this old bike... rather save for something different!  Others may disagree, but I'd leave it as is and save for your new bike.

Running... tri outfit and shoes.  Do I need a race belt for the number?  The events are sprints so I am not planning to bother with fuel etc.  I personally like having a race belt vs pinning on the number.  If you're going to wear the tri-suit and not put a t-shirt over it, the belt will save you time in T1 as you won't want to swim with the number pinned to your tri-suit.  You can find a belt for $5.

Hmmm..... any suggestions?  Smile

Since you will be training on your old bike, make sure you have tubes for those tires in your seat bag.  If you have a flat out on the road, it's unlikely someone will have a tube to lend/give you.  Also make sure you know how to change a flat, front and back.  Or, if you are like my friends....ride with someone (me) who can change them lightening fast.

Exciting to think about, isn't it????

Yep!!  I'm pretty excited ... and plenty nervous too!!   Thanks for the info and suggestions!  I will have to look into learning how to change a flat.  I saw that there are some videos on the site.

wgraves7582 - 2010-01-13 8:22 AM Morning Ann(e) - I am here for a while then off to Excel Training from 9-11:30.

It has been a quiet village lately!

We will certainly have to do something about that!

2 1/2 hours of Excel training, ugh.

My thoughts exactly - plus it cuts right through my snack time also - oh well

Tell me about it. I had just gotten myself back into my eating every few hours schedule and BAM this class has totally blown that out of the water!

Thanks Kim. I seriously considered running in the morning and then trying to make it back for the party, but with the luck I have I'd have gotten a flat or something halfway between there and here.

I am definitely going to track down the queen when I'm in the burg!

Right now I'm thinking Eagleman in Md, the Delaware Diamondman in Sept, or the Patriots Half in Williamsburg, VA in Sept. A far out possibility is Savageman in Sept. I need to find some swim mojo, too. Once I get past my run on Sunday I am going to start hitting the pool HARD!!!!!

The only thing I will add to all of this is make sure the swim cap is provided by the race if you want one. My first triathlon was a pool swim and they did not provide them.

Good luck, you'll be fine. GO GHOULIES!!!!!

Hiya Ghoulies. I haven't been around much at all. I guess it is an after holiday, too damn cold and too much going on in life funk. Hopefully a run here this afternoon will help.
I'll try to catch up tomorrow.
