Feeling a little tired tonight - last night was a tri club run session and it was hard work.
Then 1hr spin before work this morning. I'm away tomorrow and Friday so hoping to get a swim and weight session while I'm away.

In terms of races
March - 5k Deerstalker adventure run and Edinburgh Uni Sprint Tri
May - Bishopbrigs Sprint
June - Stirling Sprint (A race
July - Trentham Sprint
Sept - First Monster - Relay Duathlon
Nov - Hellrunner - Adventure run (A race)

So I'm working on my running while topping up the other two to make sure I'm in top form from the run.

Slayer - a question for you...
How long did it take you to recover from your 1st Ironman? I'm doing IMC in August but now I'm also thinking of siginig up for Muskoka70.3 two weeks later. I've done Muskoka before (and have a score to settle with the course) - but I'm worried that my body will not have fully recovered from the IM effort. What are your thoughts?

slokat-go for it! when you are ready push it further! going from sprint to oly sounds great.

nerdjock-wise to listen to your body. you will do yourself more harm then good to try and jam workouts in when your body is fighting something off.

nicruns-sounds like a deal! go get you some cheaper deals.

I wish I could work with you all what race schedule to do. I am sorry I know very little about Canada tri. the way i do it is think to myself what single race do i want to do the most. that is my A race. if there are two, there are two peaks.

then i fit everything in building to that A race(s) and I prioritize. You can see on the middle box of my logs how I rank my 2011 races.

Usually the longest course is the biggest race. this year I am trying the double peak year. it may break me mentally and physically as normally am more of a progression type of guy where it goes like this:

spring-sprint
summer-oly
early fall-HIM
late fall-IM

mark-sorry about you getting sick. at least you contain your whining well!

as to your question, i offer these words of wisdom based on my experiences. if you do them whole-heartedly, IM will break your azz down. i would not do the Muskoka this year to get your revenge. You will still be beat down and recovering in so many ways. Enjoy the glow from IMC. Make it super special. Fleck wrote about IMC in hallowed terms on st.com. even i want to do it after all i read.

It just sounds like you want to do too much around the same time. Target the IM and get Muskoka revenge next year. You have all of 2012 to work towards revenge on it if you want it. To me, prioritizing races is a massive key to feeling good about your year at the end of it. But I am only one opinion and I am often flawed. Check with others too.

Edit to add: Kate-OOPS almost forgot. You are a rockstar! Love the races youare targeting for end of season. Y'all check them out again. They are awesome. Monster and Hellrunner haha!

Ditto on the no to to HIM 2 weeks after full IM. That's just crazy talk. It took me about 4 weeks after my IM to even feel comfortable running again. You should  be in the best shape of your life going into the IM but you will be crushed for several weeks after.

Woops, sometimes I don't listen to my own advice. My wife just reminded me I ran a 5k one week after the IM and won my age group. But I never would have considered a HIM.

to clarify, im not saying not to do it. im saying dont do it for revenge. if you want to do it, make it a fun day, but having said that, what HIM is a "fun day"? if you want fun and you cant find it elsewhere then a HIM, you are worse off then even the slayer.

Masters swim canceled because of the freaking snow.  Will this winter never end?  Will take the boys to the Y later today and let them all run in the gym while I swim on my own.

agreed-- this winter has been an absolute MESS!
they're calling for another 5+cm of snow (on top of what we're already stuck with) the night before my next long run
miserable stuff.

i have the option to (assuming i can get a spot) do a 20km time trial computrainer ride next month!
sounds like it would be good to do (just to see what i can do at this point!)

master's swim last night after running/speed-work was a MESS. the water was REALLY hot (steaming, in fact-- which was gross) & my calf started to cramp up when i hopped out of the pool
UNPLEASANT!
but ah well... i guess the not-so-great-feeling workouts have their place too...
character-builders??

i'm debating spin class today
(but REALLY looking forward to the massage i have booked after work!)

i do love cheap stuff!
i ordered the shoes (which wound up being the last pair they had in stock) from this place:
never dealt with them before... but i just couldn't resist this time around!!
looking forward to getting those in the mail!

good job shifting gears slokat!

bummer about that cramp but yay about the massage (I haven't had one in ages!). the computrainer ride would be a great baseline for you nicruns. make sure you get your avg watts/avg heart rate/cadence and go for it! Let us know how the shoes go.

my test results were solid. only down 2% from pre-IMFL 360 to 353!

I did my longest non-stop swim ever this morning: 3500 yards!  It took 1:15 and that pace (2:08/100yd) definitely works for me.  This is a major confidence boost for me, since swimming is my weakest leg and I have nightmares about it.  True, I felt like dying towards the end, but I have 5 months to go and I'm sure I will improve by then.

I had a tri dream/nightmare last night in which I forgot my cycling shoes and had to wear sneakers and then started to suffer from memory loss where I forgot that I had ever completed the swim.  It was a complete blank.  It's a little too early to start having IM dreams Tongue out

I have a run and a drainer ride on tap for tonight.

Good job, everyone!

hate them IM nightmares. I had some in January which were partially responsible for me getting my azz in gear.

waiting to hear how peter did...

that's AWESOME!
even after how painful last night's master's swim was (i don't think anything will make me love intervals)... a nice long swim at pace sounds like a FANTASTIC way to spend a chunk of the day
great result too!

(laziness & sore leg muscles did win out & i bailed on today's planned spin class)
BUT! i'll be in the pool for an extra swim session this weekend after my long run!

SO excited to get my cheap shoes!!
(i hope they're as comfy as the newer models...)
but regardless: anything will be an improvement over biking around in running shoes & flat pedals

dumb question: what's a computrainer ride??

Run test was a "no go" do to work. I thought it was going to be a forced rest day but I did sneak off to the pool at lunch a swim a few laps. I started back on my HIM plan so I am doing more interval training over long slow laps.

I really didn't want to admit it, but I had terrible nightmares about my IM. They were in full techni-color. One dream had me coming out of the water and getting to T1 and having my running shoes in the bag instead of my cycling shoes.

I'm not real worked up about missing the testing. I'm fairly sure my HR zones are accurate for running. I will be doing interval runs tomorrow followed by a long bike Sat and long run Sun. My next race is a 10 mile road race that I was shamed into signing up Feb 12.

350 watts is my new goal on the bike so I can ride with the "Big Boys" That is about what a friend of mine, who was a former pro rider, pushes except he weighs about 140-150 lbs.

10 miles = my comfort zone
love the distance! it's enough to be a real challenge... but not too much that you'll be messed up after
enjoy!!
(i have to wait until April for mine)

& thanks for the computrainer info
sounds like it's worth trying to get in on the free ride/trial!

since i have NO clue what wattage on the bike is.... or why it's important (what sort of an impact it has on your overall ability/endurance...)
so much to learn....
this will never get boring, eh??

watts are just another measure of output but they are great to know like pacing or heart rate as it gives you something to compare back to and they are less impacted than heart rate by the environment or internal variables like dehydration.

i always wanted to run a 10 miler. i think that would be the perfect distance. 10k is kind of confusing. you need to be closer to 5k or half mary pacing? 10 miler is clearly more distance than 6 miles so you settle in a bit and then kick it when you get to the final 5k!

peter already is a big boy. dont let him fool you!

I just got great news. I just got invited by all3sports for their elite/age group team. I will have a discount code for you all pretty soon.

Congrats!  Slayer power!

I think 10 miles is a great distance, too.  It's long enough to make you feel badazz but not so long that you feel like dying...and you can push the pace a bit.

Eeewww! I hate swimming in hot water!  Unless I'm on vacation Cool   As much as it sucks to jump into that cold pool in the morning, it's a lot better than swimming in hot water.  That whole sweating while in water thing is just weird.  And, yes, character-builders lead to mental toughness...which is PRICELESS!

The pool was 86 today when I was doing my intervals. The chlorine was killing me.

While I was training for Cozumel, an open water swimmer died in Dubai apparently from heat exhaustion. I swam my laps at least once a week in the aqua-size pool that is kept between 86-88 just to get used to swimming in warm water. It was salt water so it is not as bad as the chlorine.

I agree with the wetsuit comment 100%. When I wear a wetsuit I become much faster 15-20 sec per 100. I use my wetsuit in any race regardless of distance if it is allowed.

Wow! Go you, that's great news.

Also .... there's a couple of people in our group who've posted on the need to do core work, which is something I dearly need to do but keep skipping. Should we set up a challenge for core and one for stretching so we can have a bit of friendly competition?

Sorry Kate. As much as I'd love to, I am not signing up on any core or stretching challenge. My time is better spent on SBR, but I do try and get 1x a week for strength/abs.

Y'all have a go. ANd stay out of the whirlpool when doing your swim workouts Peter!

Whirlpool workouts are easy. Just do circles not laps.

I skip the core myself. That may be part of my problem but I try to focus on the SBR. Just not enough hours in the day.

60 degrees and sunny forecast for Sat. Nice day for a century ride.
