Trainer tires... yes it is perfectly okay to leave your regular tire on to use the trainer, but it will wear it down.  They do make specific trainer tires that will supposedly last forever, but you CANNOT ride with it outside so if you by chance had a nice day, you'd have to change it.  So far the weather here has been pretty good and I've been able to get outside.  If it looks like I have to use the trainer for a good while, I plan on putting on an old tire, actually the stock tire that came with the bike.  I will still be able to ride outside with it, but OF COURSE, will change back to the color matching one before a race, ha ha!  I always thought it would be cool to buy a cheapie wheel with cassette that I could permanently mount with a trainer tire and just change out the whole back wheel, but I"m cheap, so haven't done that.

Different trainers tend to destroy your tires at different rates.  I looked into it a bit a few months ago.  Hilde pretty much touched on the options.  Just replace your tires more often or look at getting a new wheel w/ cassette.  Depending on where you live, you can pick one up on craigslist for a fairly descent price if you are able to wait around for a good deal.

My semi-permanent trainer set up!  It's hard not to ride daily when I see it every time I watch TV!

Way cool set up.

The indoor tri went well.  I'm happy with how it went overall.

10 minute swim=560 yards (last year was 580 yards) OK as I have not been to the pool much at all.

30 minute cycle=7.4? miles (last year was 8.26 miles)  I did not push it as much as I wanted to RUN the run.

20 minute run=1.54 miles (last year 1.37 miles)  I am pleased with this as it shows my progress this year.  I felt pretty strong and increased my speed throughout the run.

Nice improvement on the run.  Nice swim time too!

Just in case any of you doubted my HTFU factor.... just got back from a 17 mile bike ride where the winds were 26 mph gusting to 31.... OMG!!!  Obviously tailwinds were not a problem, and had a little bit of being battered on the crosswinds, but when I made that turn INTO the headwind at mile 13, and was pedaling the granny gear on a flat at 10 mph, ugh, couldn't wait to just tough it out and get home!!  I think I'll sleep well tonight!

Thanks for the info on the trainer/tire wear. Since there is no chance that I will be heading outside for a spin until at least March (they don't plow, let alone salt all of the streets in my city), I will look into a trainer tire.

Love the poster and the bike set up Brad!

Melanie - holy crap girl - that is Crazy! Glad you survived, I think my heart skipped a beat looking at that pic too.

Tammy glad to hear the ankle is doing okay after the race - way to tough it out!

Another question... anyone know of a good place online to buy reasonably priced swimwear? About the only place locally that sells swimwear is Dick's and it's ridiculously over-priced, even when it's on sale.

Thanks!
Michelle

Hilde - Ah that makes sense.

Janet - So is that a promotion? I'm sure you'll rock it and the orchestra stuff

Melanie - Great pic - I agree - you're crazy - 12F water and you're only in shorts and bra

Tammy - Yay for the ankle being ok. Good luck with next month's HM

I buy almost 100% of my stuff and my daughter's stuff (she is on a swim team) from swimoutlet.com

The prices aren't great on everything, but if you get something on sale or clearance you can get a great price.  I think it is around $5 flat shipping, so better bang for your buck if you have a bigger purchase.  I always read the reviews and haven't been disappointed yet.

x 3 on Swimoitlet.com. I think I've gotten all my suits from there the last couple of years. It's also a good place to get gear - paddles for $5, etc.

Melanie, I had somehow missed your Polar Plunge pic, OMG, brrrrr.... shouldn't you be wearing down jacket or something, haha?  Maybe you should have gone for a long run first, you could have used it as an ice bath!!  How long did you stay in?

x a zillion on Swim Outlet... oh, and go for Speedo Endurance.... those suits last forever!!  The straps will stretch out before the fabric fades or wears out.  Not as cool patterns as the regular suits, but who's trying to make a fashion statement in the pool??  Well, actually I DO match my swimcap to my suit... did I just say that??  You can go for the grab bag suits if you don't care what design/color you get.... Dick's has a pretty pitiful swim section and they ARE expensive, I rarely buy anything there.  We have a sports store here called Academy... WAY better prices and they have great sales too.  I don't know if they have them outside of Texas.

Hilde, I totally match my swim cap with my swim suit!    Hot pink cap and black speedo endurance suit with pink piping!  Do you coordinate ALL your gear, like is your swim gear lime green like your bike stuff? Or do you keep your sports' color coordination "separate"?  These are all the important tri questions that I MUST have answers to, haha!!!

Well, this WASN'T intentional, but yeah, all 3 sports are coordinated to my bike, ha ha!  Lime green and black!  My swim suit is lime green and black with a neon green cap... lots of neon green bike tops... not so much on the run stuff, cuz it depends what time of day I'm running.  My running shoes are neon orange with neon green accents, so sometimes I match the orange.  I'm seeing a lot more neon green these days, I couldn't find ANY right after I bought my bike last year!

Trainer tires - don't have one but probably should.I've decided that this week needs to be a step back week. Schedule not conducive to productive training time. Had a chill all day that I coy ld not shake. It's time reflect. So I'm targeting about 1/2 to 3/4 of last weeks total training time. Sounds like everyone had a nice weekend.

Andrea, I am really impressed with your indoor tri!  Those are some outstanding numbers.  I'm pretty envious of your super swimmer skills!  Is it a series of indoor tris through the winter or was it a single event?

Swim gear- chalk up another Swim Outlet shopper.  Love them.  And their customer service is the best if you ever have an issue.  I also love Nashbar for biking and Running Warehouse for running.  Any other wonderful stores I should be aware of?

Melanie, that pic is classic.  I don't think I would have had the balls to do it.

Tammy, keeping the fingers crossed for your ankle.  Sounds like so far, so good!

Brad- love the bachelor trainer station.

Everyone else, hope you're all having a great week.  I will try and catch up more soon.  Getting back into the spin class routine and loving it at my new gym.  First indoor tri coming up Jan 29 and can't wait.  May have to walk/jog the run, but at 1.8 miles it shouldn't be too rough on the injury.  Got tri feverTongue out

+1 on speedo endurance - it's the only swimsuit I've found that I don't fall out of.

Melanie - Hope the step back week goes well.

Swim caps - I've only ever tried them during school swimming carnivals and I found them really tight but I'm starting to think about using them again since my hair keeps getting in the way - any tips on making them less tight/consticting feeling?

Erin, another one with an indoor tri!  Cool~!!  I do one with a pool swim and luckily I can seed myself pretty early so I don't get caught in the mob scene!

Suzie, no hints on the swim cap thing, it is what it is since I don't think they come in sizes.  I always wear one, figures it cuts down on drag and helps a bit with chorine in the hair.
