kaburns1214 - 2012-04-16 11:07 AM Here's the follow up question -- are there any situation in which a race director should cancel a race?

Any natural or unatural event that prevents the required support staff from attending.  Hurricanes, Tornado's, act of war, High winds, unatural tides or surf conditions.  Does a strike in the honey bucket service company count?  I've run a HM in ice storms.

Can the RD shorten 26.2 to a Half Mary?  Seems like that happens to Tri's all the time.  Triathlon's become du's, Ironman becomes HIM........

This I agree with - if it's unsafe, it's unsafe for everyone.  Cancel or modify as necessary, everyone runs the same race.  But do not allow deferrals.

Unsafe conditions ... hard to define, but unusually high temps, especially if temps haven't been consistent.  They cancelled the Chicago 13.1 last year in the middle of the race because it was too hot to quick ... they closed the course.

Other reasons would include anything that would make a swim for the average swimmer difficult or dangerous, anything that would make the bike dangerous or more prone to crashes ...

Also the Steelhead HIM in August has cancelled the swim portion multiple times.  They even determine which direction the swim with go in the morning of the race because of turbulance/tide

Q1, I agree, races should be canceled in unsafe conditions, not unpleasant ones!

Q2, start up a conversation with the guy, if he seems receptive then offer some advice.

I've just come off what felt like 2 great weeks of training, both around 10 hours/week, which make them my biggest weeks ever. I'm now into a bit of a taper leading towards my first goal race of the year, the northern crossing (duathlon), consisting of a 9km run, 84km bike and 8km run.

This is the 3rd time I've done it, first time in just over 7 hours, last year in 6:02. This year my goal is to break under 5:30. Which I think should be acheivable.

The really bad news is that last night I did a 15 minute brick run after my ride, and by the end of it I was feeling that horrible sharp pain in my calf which I had last year. So no more running until race day (possibly no more workouts at all ) and hope for the best. And likley a 2 week rest period coming up. Damn it, I was just starting to make some progress with my running again.

Anyone ever get addicted to the music they grew up listening to?  The stuff their parents played.  I am a 60s and 70s rock addict all of a sudden.

Ok question...something I never really thought about (which is probably sadEmbarassed).  Finally got around to taking a look at the flat from my Quassy pre-ride...starting pumping up the tire when i heard a distinct hissing noise.  Looks like a nice sharp piece of gravel was my undoing (steep climb + gravel = hole in tire!)

So ..my question...what do you do if this happens in a race (clinchers- obviously)?  I've changed tubes before in a race (twice in one race..not fun!) but never had a tire go on me...patches don't work (they just bubbled up from the escaping air) does super glue work?  Or are you just SOL.

Guess I'm on the trainer till I can get to LBS!!

Electric tape on the outside of the tire or putting a dollar bill on the inside of the tire.

Either is pretty effective.

GU Packet works well. Found this right before my Oly last year and booted it with a GU packet and it held up.

How many miles do you have on those tires?  There is a point where you need to just let go and buy new tires.  You'll be faster.... and new tires are more puncture resistant.  Check your break pads.  Your tires look like they have seen some heavy breaking.

<end rant>

That tire had around 400-500 miles on it at the time. We have terrible road surfaces here.

The numbers geek in me loves this site:

Pretty cool - I just wish they had incorporated the non-IM brand races.

Interesting! Clicked through to the Kona data and the splits by age group was intriguing.

Other than local being the advantage, this is the reason I don't see myself doing IMWI. I am just not a good biker and am horrible at biking hills!

Good morning.  Up at 4:15 for a 3000m swim.  Nailed my times with the paddle sets.  It's amazing how you feel after you take the paddles off and swim normally.......it feels like my hands are pebbles or something.  Anyway, strength training later today.

You could do it.  Although its rank may go down because the run us MUCH easier this year than it was in the past two years.  Also I think the results are slightly skewed.  You'll notice that a lot of European IMs are in the "easy" category based on average times.  What the study doesn't take into account is that the cutoff for European IMs is often 15 hours rather than 17 hours so you loose the slowest competitors and the average times get "faster."

45 minute run so far in today and some yoga.  Dropped a half minute per mile off my pace at a slightly lower HR from the same workout last week.  Headed in the right direction.  Still a struggle at times to make myself run that slow.

First all outdoor brick of the season. Biked 32.12 and ran 4.29. So nice to be outside biking again two days in a row. The last three days have just been so picture perfect.

I am right there with you! Each run/bike gets better though!

1400 swim this morning. I was able to do 4x100's today with 30 seconds rest. I want to get to 5 and then start decreasing the rest in between before my first race! I worked on form after those with some pulls and kicks.

Hope everyone has a great day!
