Hey all.

Decided to take Thur. & Fri. off of training. It was snowing and I was feeling a little out of it. I did get a swim & run in today before it snowed again.

Thursday I saw my nutritionist. Just getting myself weighed and fat percentage checked and tweaking my diet. I'm at 155 lbs. & 13% body fat. I really having trouble gaining the weight I want. I'm looking to be around 165 lbs. & 12-13% body fat. So, we figured some muscle mass is what I need to get to the desired weight. So, for all you gym rats I need some advice on exercises and/or weight training to get the 10 lbs. I need.

I'm no gym rat, but I did some lifting early in life and spent a few years doing some lifting later on.  The gym rats may have better advice, but here's mine.

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to gain weight?  12-13% BF seems ideal.

For me, the big lifts are the ticket to weight gain.  By bug life I mean the Olympic lifts like squats, deadlifts, cleans.  I'm opposite of you in that just looking at a bar to do squats makes me gain weight, as long as Io eat excess calories.  Jeff will go inot it more, but you need carbs as well as protein, since protein is synthesized in the presence of carbs.   but there has to be a calorie excess to gain weight.

Huh??  What does a bug's life have to do with squats and deads?

As a former power lifter I can chime in about the weight gain.  Although I never intended to gain weight, nor did I gain much while into the power scene, I did gain A LOT of muscle mass and leaned up to a very solid, cut weight.

Certain lifts will give you more bang for your buck for sure but really the principle of lifting heavy is what you would be striving for.  Heavy weight and low reps will gain you a lot of muscle mass and lean up your mass.  Particular exercises to do would be heavy bench work including flat, incline and decline benches and squats.....heavy squats.  And with your back problems squats should not be done at all in my opinion.  Squats if not done very strictly WILL cause an injury over time, even if you aren't lifting massive loads.

I need to head for my bike fit right now so I'll get a little more specific later on this evening.

Haha, you ever see a bug lift?  Can't ants lift something like 300x their body weight, so there ya go.

Actually, I meant exactly what you were saying.  Big lifts.  Heavy weights.  But I forgot about the back issues.  Totally agree with Dirk that squats are out with back issues, and I would assume dead lift too.  Jeff is really the expert on lifting and working through injuries, so maybe he'll have some other ideas.

Thanks guys.

The main reason for the weight gain is I felt much better training at the 160-165 lb. weight. I want to stay at the 12-13% body fat. I know added muscle doesn't translate to more power, it's more of a comfort thing.

The weather is getting really nice here. Friday is supposed to be in the low 70's !!! Heat wave! I plan on getting out and going on a group ride on the century course. We plan on doing 75-85 miles and attacking those BIG climbs. I'm pretty excited. I found out that this is part of the Death Ride Race course. I plan on doing that race next year.

Also, someone mentioned they were interested in some nutrition info. I will get that posted up this week some time.

Great to see some of you racing. Great jobs! Everyone else, stay healthy and train hard.

Back from Boston. What an awesome weekend.  I didn't get to ride with my buddy on Saturday...very disappointing, but they had something come up, so there ya go.  I felt like crap yesterday....stayed up too late Saturday night and had 600 too many calories for the day.  Only got a few hours of sleep because we woke up early to drive into the city to see the 5k and mile races.

The high school kid that won the mile did it in something like 4:27.  It was unreal.  The elite guy only beat him by like 20 seconds.  That's very impressive in my house.

I took today off as a personal day and got a 6 mile run in the morning, watched the Boston marathon on TV, did about 30 miles on the bike and watched some more cycling...and then weeded the gardens.  AWESOME DAY!  not to mention it was absolutely perfect weather here today.  I'm pumped to have a bowl of ice cream and catch a movie before bed.  I honestly cannot remember if I have ever taken a day where I just did whatever I felt like doing at that given moment.  Is this what retirement is supposed to be like?!  I think I need to retire earlier than estimated.  Better email my financial advisor about that one.

Hope everyone else had a solid weekend.  Lesson on the day:  Take time for yourself.  Sometimes you just need to recharge.

I need to head for my bike fit right now so I'll get a little more specific later on this evening.

If you begin a serious weight training regimen there are some things to consider.

  1. You are already pretty lean and a careful watch of your protein and general calorie consumption will be important.  As you attempt build even a little bit of bulk, you may lose body fat.  I doubt you are particularly interested in that.  It is very typical that this will happen which means you are just as likely to lose weight.
  2. Anything that will involve heavy loads that will strain your back should be out!  Squats, deads, cleans are totally out!  There are also other exercises that will involve the back muscles and a possible strain if they are done incorrectly.  Military presses come to the forefront of my mind but bench presses will also compress your spine if you allow your butt to lift off the bench.
  3. If you start a weight training regimen you need to start pretty slow and use light weights and high reps for a while prior to beginning anything heavy.
If you have more specific questions, throw them out.  I'll do my best to answer as this is one of my areas I think I can provide the best advice.

Dirk, same to you bud!  You will really fly now.  I noticed that last season our USAT ranking scores were very close.  I propose that this year we have a throw down.  We will compete via our USAT ranking, OK?  With your new bike I think you have an edge.

I'll have to check this out.  I think you're trying to boost my ego.  I figure your quite a bit faster than me especially if you were come up here on the "pancakes" I normally race on.  If I were to head to the hills you are used to I'd be crushed.

Record heat up here in the northeast, I know the Boston Marathon was hugely affected.

My wife and I used the day off (many Mass companies get the day off) to open the cottage!!!!!  Temp hit 90, everything went great, the boat and the cottage made it through the winter with no problems at all, which is a rarity.  The water was 46, so a little chilly, but she kept her record intact by taking the plunge.  I'm more of a 60+ degree guy, so I watched and offered support from the dock - someone has to be sane on the family!  I hope everyone had an equally awesome weekend.

Glad you had a good weekend getting that beautiful cottage ready. When's the Junkie SBR seminar being held there?

Just sharing my brief workout from tonight as I'm sure some you can relate to this and it was a little comical at times.....

Hubby had to work late so I'm on my own for my workouts tonight. On the schedule was a short trainer ride and short easy run. The total workout I was planning was not even going to take an hour. I bought a used jogging stroller over the weekend so during my trainer ride I thought maybe we could break out the stroller instead of me running on the treadmill. The kids were psyched. I told my son he could ride his bike, his little friend was over and she wanted to come along too.

So just to get ready for us to leave for what was going to be a 10 min run, it took my son 10 min of running around the house with one shoe on while he looked for his other shoe (which we later found in the craft closet). My daughter HAD to have her red shirt, red sparkle skirt and pink blanky. Finally got them dressed and couldn't find the dog collar. Figured out another fix for the dog and my daughter had locked half of herself into the stroller harness and couldn't get herself out. Fixed that and realized all of the tires on the stroller needed air. Finally had everything ready, kids on bikes with helmets, daughter in stroller, dog on leash, mom starts running. I run past 2 houses and my daughter yells (wait for it.....) I GOTTA POTTY MOMMY!!!!!! Bwahahahaha, maybe you have to be a mom to understand but at this point I just had to laugh .

Well my first sprint tri of the season is in the books. Race report is here: IceBreaker Tri

I want to thank you guys for the swim advice during the winter mentor group. I went from 2:18 per 100 yards last year to 1:45 per 100 yards! I still have a long way to go, but that was some major improvement in my book.

I twisted and ankle and fought a cramping muscle for a couple miles of the run, but I still had a good race.

race report completed: carmel sprint tri today:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=435332

(must be a better way to place race report in this thread?)

THANK YOU!!! Dirk and company - because everyone has made contributing advice this winter. The training has helped a lot-

I bettered last year's time by +- 4 min. conditions were not great for the bike, as wind 20+ with gusts almost 30 (I know 2 people who literally got blown off their bikes  and paid a scraped-up price) Looking forward to my upcoming half marathons - and then tri's in June/July/Aug.

good start.

Way to go! Congrats

Glad everyone is training hard and having good w/o's.  Love the pics of the new bikes but of course I start drooling too!

hey thanks for all the advice on running.  I've started running slow and actually enjoying it.  I have been running to where I was barely catching my breath the whole way and it was hurting and not so much fun.  Since I've started slowing down, the runs are MUCH more enjoyable, thus I get out there more.

My wife is not a member of this group, but she just PR'd her 1/2 marathon and won her AG.

While ya'll's races are just starting, ours is ending...about 1 more month and it is over for us until the fall but that will give me an excuse to get excessive swim time in!!!

Ya'll keep er gassed!

Tell your wife that is awesome. I hope some day to win an AG hopefully it will be before I am in my 70s.

Trigal (Dina) thanks for the laugh..ooopps sorry...  U know a guy would have never made it...children and a dog...

PGrun (Paul)  Congrats on finishing the tri.  I love reading all the race reports and appreciate folks posting them.

Sounds like everyone had a good productive weekend...whether it was healing or adding exercises, everyone is getting it done.

Has anyone tried those bungie cord things that attach to U in the pool and U basically swim in place?  U see our pool is just 20 ft by 40 ft and that is not big enough to get a lot of swimming in w/o getting dizzy from the turns.

I am having a little success on learning to swim.  i went to my swim lessons yesterday and the instructor said I was now actually doing a swimming motion instead of crawling.  She did say that w/ all the weight lifting I have done tht I may not be able to get a completely perfect stroke due to my unflexible shoulders.  I am rolling better and taking a stroke every 2 strokes which works better than every 4 - 6 like a lot of people take.  That will come in time.

Kurt glad to hear that you had a good lesson yesterday and feel like you are making progress. I am going through the same thing. I had real good swim on Thursday and then yesterday I felt like I struggled alot. I felt slow and I though my technique was sloppy. Sometimes it seems like it is one step forward and two steps back but I look at where I was in December when I started and where I am now and it is like night and day. I'm slowly improving. I just have to remember to not get to fustrated and just keep working. Like you said it will come together in time.

Tracy that is classic. I do remember those days and just had to laugh, thanks for sharing.

bswcpa - 2012-04-16 10:10 PM I've gotta meet your wife, Warren. She sounds like a very fun lady to jump in that cold of water! Glad you had a good weekend getting that beautiful cottage ready. When's the Junkie SBR seminar being held there?

Anytime you all are in New England, we will definitely pull out the red carpet.  It's a really rustic camp/cottage, so don't expect the Taj Mahal, but the front yard is gorgeous!  It's also about 3 miles from Ironman Timberman 70.3, so if anyone gets the hankering to do that one I'll be happy to show the course!

Jonathan - you were a good example of your "lesson of the day". To answer your question- yes, I think that's what retirement is supposed to be like and I'll hopefully find out in a few years. I had to laugh when you wrote you had an AWESOME DAY and then talked about weeding the garden. I don't put those two things together, but glad you did.

Karl - I missed saying something about your wife on your post a day or so ago. Give her my congratulations for her PR and her top podium spot. Sweet!

Tony - How'd your first couple days go on your formal 24 week HIM training plan?

Dina - Oh my, your story had me reliving the good ole days of younger kids. Too funny. Way to make every effort to bring your kids along with you. You get a gold star for your patience. I can tell you're a good mom and that's so important since your years with them go by so fast.

Tracy - Congrats on getting in a 10.5 mile run. And smokin on your swimming while at the tail end of your sickness is great. I'm glad you're returning back to normal.

Dirk - How'd the bike fit go?

Jeff and Dirk - Since you brought up the USAT rankings - you have to let us know where you placed. Is that a motivator on your races at all or just something you just check every year? I'm curious to how you view it.

I've double checked my tax return clients and made sure they're e-filed and done. Done! I'd taken a couple days off training after my 30 mile trail race on Saturday (race report in my training log) but went to the pool today and did a comfortable 1500. I'm picking up my son from school to get his license and then we're meeting my hubby for lunch. I asked my son where he wanted to eat and of all places, he wants McDonalds! Ugh. Oh well, to celebrate his rite of passage that's where we'll go.

Have a wonderful Tuesday everyone!

Warren - you'd posted pictures of your "rustic camp" in the last group and I know I'd love it more than the Taj Mahal because it's in the type of setting that feeds my soul. The location and views looked spectacular.
