Fred D - 2012-10-09 8:31 PM We should aim at loading up some videos of bike fit and swim videos in the coming months.

Great idea!

Regarding the bike, I am looking to get a bit lower on the bike (removing a spacer) and changing the saddle for comfort. Feedback in this area will be appreciated. I'll try to load some before and after pics/videos for this November project.

Regarding the swim, not sure I could handle all of the constructive criticism that will fly my way with a swim video

...and run analysis?

Vimeo seems like the way to go if we want to password protect. Sharing private videos on Youtube has been a PAIN for me. I'll try to set up a drop box on Vimeo and let you know how it goes.

Meanwhile, I've learned that mild injury is bad for my wallet. I now own an aero helmet (impulse buy) and picked up the bike light and Adamo saddle I've been planning on getting. Bike commuting 2-3x's a week commences next week. Hold me accountable, guys!

Marshall, very cool video analysis. Question? What are you doing for the dropped elbows? Fishes, apart from "awareness" and the concept of reaching over the ball, are there any drills to help correct this? Have had the same feedback and working on it, but it's a challenge.

Kim, I picked up a copy of Sheila Taormina's Swim Secrets book.  She is a big advocate of the early vertical forearm or reaching over the ball.  She has a series of dry land drills with a power band that has helped me "ingrain" feel of the catch.

Do share!

Lord, here we go: http://vimeo.com/album/1955328.  Password is "marshall".  It's pretty long, but the Tarwater stuff comes in near the end of both the above water and under water videos.  The intro video is just the instructor talking.

Despite being subjected to my swim technique, more particularly the lack thereof, I thought this was a great tool.  I just need to get to work on the suggestions, but the visual explanation really helps me, not to mention being a real eye-opener on how poorly I swim.  I guess bad form and slow is better than good form and slow.

Great video Marshall!  A couple questions: what was your previous swim experience?  Are you an "adult onset swimmer"?  Did you have other instruction?  The coach says you "are a student of swimming", were you a self-taught swimmer?  Also, what was your before times per 100 compared to your after 100's?

I really appreciate you posting this.  As others have said, your stroke doesn't look that bad.  It's amazing how many little tweaks there are to add up to swim speed.  Great job! And keep at it!

In our house - we have a "cost per usage" justification model...so the more I use something, the less the cost per usage. I managed to get my last road bike down to less than $0.01 a mile before I passed it on to someone else.

Ran for the first time since last Thursday and my flippin' foot hurts. You'd think that 5 days completely off would help...but apparently not. It's a bummer since right now, my legs/lungs/heart all feel like they could go longer - it's just the pain in my foot. Looks like a bike ride/focus is in store for me.

I'm getting excited for Saturday...anyone got any Kona watching plans? I've got to figure out how to sneak it in between soccer games, horseback riding lessons and painting the bathroom.

If you are swimming good with a band;

You have a good catch.
You have a good body position
You are not over gliding
You have a good stroke rate

If without the band your swimming slower other issues are present.  Some that come to mind are; kick, ankle flexibility and hip rotation.  I am sure other issues come into play.  My gut instinct is lower body without seeing.

Are you coached or have someone that can check you?

I've tried swimming with a band and I get no where.  I actually need a buoy to keep me afloat.  That must not be good.  I use an old cut up tire tube.

No big plans but I plan on tracking Bryan as time allows me that's for sure.  I hope he has a really good race.

You can make youtube videos private by link.  Only folks who have the url/link can see them.

I'm getting super excited!  I should be landing in Kona in a little more than 24 hours.  Front row to watch my girlfriend compete.  #1031 W40-44

Thanks, yes adult onset.  Swimming now for almost two years - definitely with some on/off periods (I know, I know).  Early on I did some lessons/clinics with a local coach and former D1 swimmer.  Started Masters earlier this year that has helped a ton.

I think what he's getting at with the student comment was I mentioned I read a lot online and try to incorporate little bits here and there - sometimes to my detriment.  For example, I read "rotate, rotate rotate," and he thought I was taking it too far.  "Finish your stroke" had me flipping my hand across my rear - he wanted me to shorten the stroke.  "Extend your hands" (or the reach like you're getting something off a shelf that just barely in reach) had me over reaching - not to mention my entry being seemingly just a few inches past my head.

I'm been out of the pool now for too long now and need to get back.  I don't really have before/after times, but Masters has helped a bunch.  If I really focus on his suggestions, I think I'll see some more improvement.  I need to rewatch the video and come back here for some drill suggestions.

I thought it was a great use of $100.

Just made a group on Vimeo. Anyone in the group can upload and watch videos. Way easier than doing it video by video.

That worked!  I PM'd Elaine my email address, she sent me an invite, I signed up.  Disco!

Now all I need is some video and a thick skin and we'll be ready to go.

^Indeed! I may talk to the Y and see if they will make an exception to the "no phones/electronics" rule if I come in extry early. I'd like to see what my stroke *actually* looks like vs. what I *think* it looks like.

Hey - best of luck for your SO...have a great time - it's a beautiful place. If you have a chance after the race is over - lots of great stuff to see - the volcano is really cool.

I have been doing a number of swim sets with no kicking and no band or pull buoy. It requires exactly as James said, tightening the butt cheeks and contracting the glutes/hamstrings.

Have you been doing any of the drills from the "goofy" video you posted in TT in the summer? If so, have they been helpful?

I haven't had my youth and juniors in the pool since I watched the video but want to try it with them if it is useful.
