Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread I think most of the on-the-course bases have been covered. Probably most important is to have a plan A, plan B, plan C. Try different stuff on your long bike and run days. See what works, and what can work. Gels? Real food? Shot blocks, protien bites. I tried having two little sandwiches in my run special needs bag last year. They really hit the spot. (but I'm real slow on the marathon anyway). The only question I see which hasn't been asked is: what did you eat the night before? Could it have been food poisining? Was it intensity related? were you pushing harder than normal? Usually what works in training works in the race, unless it doesn't. Thus plan B and plan C. I have a friend who's plan C turned out to be a slice of pizza on the run. It worked for him. And if you've got a plan B and plan C then you have something to try if things start to go bad. |

Veteran 379 | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Originally posted by godekjames Thanks for the advice, I did take in a good amount of water on the swim as i was in the middle of a scrum for a while. I did not think that would matter much, but maybe it was part of the problem. I switched to EFS Liquid Shots this race as I was having a few cramping issues in prior IM's. If I had it to do over, I would rather cramp up a bit than sit on the side of the road sick as a dog. I think I'm going to try Infinit with Carbpro on my long training days and see how that goes. It seems people do OK with Carbpro and an electrolyte drink mix. Jim i have done some rides with a guy that was on a cycling race team in college. he said they would all take tums during the race because the calcium in the tums helped them to not cramp -- and the added benefit, calmed the stomach re the other stuff they were putting in their mouths. i've tried it in training. i don't know that it's helping, but I do know it is not hurting. |

Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Looking at my mileage totals for the year. Usually go into IMFL with ~ 4000 miles on the bike and ~600 miles running. If I'm lucky I'll be at 1/2 of that this year. Will I be under trained? How bad will it be? I suppose at this point that all I can do is continue to follow my plan as best I can. We're just a little more than 8 weeks out from the race! |

We're just a little more than 8 weeks out from the race! I wouldn't stress it or overthink it. Stick to your plan and pace accordingly. Worst thing now would be to go overboard and injure yourself. This will be my 1st IM and I'll probably go down with only about 2300 mi biked, 550 ran, and 160k swam in 2013, roughly. It feels like a lot of training to me but I know it's on the low side for IM training. I had to take 3.5 months off bike early this year. That's pretty much all the training I can fit in my life schedule right now. It is what it is. Edited by speedzilla 2013-09-05 3:21 PM |

Expert 1148 Santa Fe, New Mexico | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread Originally posted by rjrankin83 Guess I should ride more. No, when your run as frikken fast as you do the bike is simply getting you to the start of the run. No seriously, wouldn't it be great to have all the time in the world to train? But your mileage and speeds look pretty good. What is your race goal? |

And things happen in all that mileage that help you prepare for changing conditions on race day. Your mileage looks pretty good. Do you have race goals? Edited by jashac 2013-09-07 10:36 AM |

Veteran 283 Va Beach | Subject: RE: Ironman Florida : Official Thread A question for you previous IMFL racers, I am staying t the Shores of Panama, is it close enough to walk to expo, transition etc or can I drive and get parking closer to the host hotel and expo? Another option is to bring a beach cruiser bike and use that to go back and forth to hotel. Jim |

A beach cruiser might be good tho just to keep those extra miles off your legs tho. Its easy to get caught up in the excitement of race week and do more walking than you should |

It's prettier, slightly shorter, and ... just more fun. It's about a 8 minute walk. But like Sue says, you've got to be careful about putting miles on your feet. There really isn't much good parking down there and it's a zoo anyway. Probably faster to walk, especially close to race day. |

Kevin and I are excited to watch you guys become Ironman. Count me in! I'm really excited that you guys are coming down. You'll have a lot of fun! I'm jealous. I raced IMFL last year and really enjoyed it...though there were some rough moments in the water and on the bike that were less than 'enjoyable', but it's all part of becoming an Ironman. BTW, those BT practice swims are like gold - you should def participate. I did and it was probably the best pre-race thing I did. I traveled to PCB sans sherpa/support crew after a very difficult week in NY with no power thanks to Hurricane Sandy (I was lucky to get a flight at all) and arrived on Thursday afternoon. I was tired from dealing with Hurricane Sandy issues on one hand, but also quite nervous on the other hand since IMFL was my first IM attempt. When I arrived at the back of the Boardwalk Hotel and met everyone, it was really calming for some reason (probably the sense of 'community' even though we were all strangers). But getting in the water with the group really helped calm my nerves. So long story short, I highly recommend the practice swims (and do not recommend living without power the week before your first IM race...) Enjoy! |

And people who I only knew from their blog have become friends. It really helps in that long race day to know people out there on the course and see them on and off all day long. So are you coming down to sign up for next year? |
