I find when I declare my goals, it helps me to achieve them. I am going to take the now 5 extra beers off the fridge shelf and hide them on the laundry room shelf. this way, after I have a tasty 22, I am not tempted to have a tag a long beverage, like I did last night. Woke up to 3" of powder today. It was a welcomed friend on my 9.5 miler today. love running in the snow. Now I have to go shovel. For all the brothers and sisters to the north, my condolences for the death of your national passtime, (hockey). Those clowns are fighting over $ again. Just when you were getting some traction with fans and networks after the last strike. I will be enjoying/nail biting here today as the SKINS take on the SEA-Chickens in the opening round of the NFL playoffs. Hope everyone has a great day. Get a workout in. Prost. Sweet run Kevin! I agree about the lack of caring when it comes to billionaires ( owners) fighting with the millionaires (Players ) .... I am not sure if this thousandaire (myself) will be watching again now that the season is back on or not? But an agreement was reached early this morning so that means a 48 game season. We'll see. I have never been into watching football, just playing it ( touch, flag) butttt...I have been watching 'The League" and it is funny enough to just maybe get me involved. |

So My first week of paleo living, has been pretty good! Besides the fact that I have to drool over the beer you guys talk about, I have lost approx 4 pounds started north of 240 and yesterday was at 235.6. I feel full and dont have any of those horrible cravings I used to be afflicted by daily. Turning down donouts and left over holiday treats hasnt been a problem at work either. I think I am going to start really planning out my return to beer and putting some effort into me selections. Although I have decided that I will have to earn each and every drop through workouts. |

I have been doing a paleo diet (boo no beer) for 2 weeks and have lost 6 lbs. total of 10lbs. total, and 35 lbs to go. I plan to start a training app. for my 5 k starting up tomorrow x 3 times this week. then ride my spin bike the opposite days. On a brighter note my brewing partners and myself are making our miabock this weekend, and then planning for next month a oatmeal stout. |

Expert 4269 | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Closed Burd - 2013-01-06 12:01 PM Is it normal that my weight numbers haven't moved but the "belly bulge" appears to have shrunk a tad? I have been searching all kinds of sites about face in water and look what I found. It was an interview with Phelps and I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't hear him say it: Published on Aug 6, 2012 American swimming legend Michael Phelps confessed on Monday that he used to be afraid of putting his face under water. The winner of a record eighteen Olympic medals also said his first time on the podium was the most special. Time to make this happen. I couldn't believe it considering he is like half FISH! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqEFtVjmlzA Cool clip about Phelps... If he can do it, so can you! As for the scale staying the same while the belly gets smaller - totally natural. You've lost fat and replaced in with muscle (which weighs more than fat). At this rate - you'll have a Phelps' like set of abs before too long! |

Justin - Awesome job on the weight loss. Those 4 pounds represent 1/10 of what you need to lose by the summer to cash in on the bike of your choice offer from your wife. At this rate, you'll get your bike just in time for the snow to thaw... As for the beer. Welcome back... |

Veteran 238 New Mexico | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Closed Well good morning everyone! Only got two hours of sleep at the station last night, so when I got home at 0630, I crashed. Don't really feel like going out and running or cycling today, but I am going to have to. I'd hate to have to deal with the wrath of the other members . Seriously I appreciate the encouragement and follow up, this group is great. I'm going to get off my butt here in the next hour and get either a jog or bike ride in, still not sure which, but I'll log it after I'm done. Ian and Justin, great job dropping those pounds. Keep at it! I know it is hard, I am trying to do the same thing. Dave - I think the chart is a great idea, whether on the forum or on the site Darren mentioned. I will add my goals for the week a little later, once I figure out what they are. I am supposed to have a meeting in Santa Fe this week if the weather does not cancel it. If I do I am going to try and get to one of the pools up there and get in a swim. Everyone have a great Sunday, whats left of it anyway, and good luck on your plans for the week. |

Had a really nice run, where I wanted to try and do some interval training. Just 5x 1 min hard 1 min easy, after a 10 min warm up. Really happy with it, looked at my watch for one of my km's I was at 5:41...really happy with that pace.
easy spin afterwards but legs still feel good, tomorrow...The Pool! |

Veteran 238 New Mexico | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Closed Bobby and Matt - thanks so much for your advice on stride and cadence. I did some research and found out how to figure out my current cadence and found all of the information on trying to get to 180-190. I downloaded a metronome for my phone that I can use to help keep a better cadence. Today on my jog, I figured out that I had been jogging with a cadence of about 150. I thought I would set the metronome to a little higher 165 and see how that felt. (most of the articles said not to just jump to 180 but to increase in increments) I shortened my stride and tried to keep up with the metronome through the jogging portion of my workout. It was quite awkward feeling to begin with, but after a few rounds, started to get the hang of it. To my surprise, when I got home and downloaded my run, I found that my pace actually increased! Also, the shins don't feel too bad! I am going to try to keep improving this area and see where it takes me. Thanks again for the advice! I owe you both a beer! |

Regular 90 Bearspaw, Alberta | Subject: RE: Beer Drinker Appreciation Society - Closed Hey All, Whew, crazy last few days!! I took your advice and took a bit of time off running to rest my legs. Unfortunately, it seems like it may have been a bit too late because now I have a shin splint. I've never had them before but I saw you all were talking about them a few days back so I'll check on my cadence and see if that helps. Also totally learned my lesson about too much too soon. So, still resting on the running (what a wrench in my HM training!!!!!!!!!) but I know if I want to run it, I need to rest now. Those of you with shin splint experience, how long did you need to not run? |

Does it hurt for every step walking, or only on the first part of your run then goes away till your walking around?Hey All, Whew, crazy last few days!! I would say your going to have to rest now. the more severe, the longer the rest. Mine hurt as I increase volume, but then I swim the next day, and i can usually run the following day with little problem, then I'm good to go until I increase the volume again. I would recommend if they're hurting even just walking around that you take at least a week off, using ice for 20min on, 20min. off x2 twice a day. take Ibuprofen 3x a day for inflamation, and spend the week doing swim and light bike. Then the following week, plan a short jog at slow pace, and see how you feel and go from there. If all's well then, look at your running plan, and how you can lessen the severity of your workouts and increases as you build your base for HM. I had plantar facia issues last year prepping for HIM, and had to take about 2weeks off in the middle of training. It sucked, but doing so got it healed and I was able to move forward and compete. Not healing completely will leave you fighting them for lengthy periods of time, and that's no fun. Sorry your dealing with this, and I wish you a speedy recovery. edited to include that I just looked over your logs. Did this start hurting after the 6 miler you did 10 or so days ago? that run was a 2x increase of your previous high total 2 weeks prior to that and I'm thinking you may have just agravated them and if you stay off for this week you should be good to go. I would avoid 6 milers and stick with a 2,3,4 for a few weeks, then slowly build that long run by 1 mile, 2, 3 miles each week following, not to exceed a 10% increase in long run increase or total volume increase for the week. Just my .10. Edited by kevinbe 2013-01-06 11:44 PM |

Just my .10. Thanks! The first couple of days it was hurting no matter what I did. Now, if I'm just walking, it's okay unless I do it for too long and then it starts to hurt a bit. I take that as a sign it's getting better though. My shins weren't sore after the long run last week, just my calves. I think it was that, plus running two days in a row last week that did it. I was still a bit sore come the first run and then quite sore come the second one. I should have just rested. At least I learned what not to do. I have been doing ice twice a day the last two days and that seems to be helping. I'm thinking of holding off running until the weekend. That will be a week and a half and then I'll see how it's feeling. I won't do my planned log run regardless and I can definitely cut the pace. |

I am kicking my a$$ tonight; I did not do the swim because the pool opens a half hour before my husband needed my car for work.
