Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open I'm not sure what to say Carlo. I looked at the map and it looks like a good rolling hills ride with a 950' of total climbing. I don't know your area to be able to guess at what your wind conditions are like. Then I snuck a peek at your logs and you're riding in the range of 17 to 19mph. If conditions are windy or calm; a tailwind or a headwind then that will affect your times beyond your control but otherwise you should just ride like you already do. 94km = 58mi @ 18mph is 3:15 you're already there. So, I think maybe I need you to tell me how to ride faster. And, I'd like to be faster in 4 weeks (for my 112mi ride) - okay? All - I went down to the lake this morning to go for a 2k swim but when I got there I just couldn't bring myself to go in. So, I took the day off and I don't seem to feel guilty (too much). I did go for coffee with a friend I swim with often. I need to get back to work again though. I did try to make an appointment for a professional bike fitting but I'm stuck playing phone tag. Hopefully, I'll get it arranged by tomorrow. |

But here's a thread with some more ideas: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... would say your best options are driving to some hills or riding into the wind. But the hills on that ride you posted are not that bad, so really I think some solid interval work would be good too. Strategy wise, spin up, and don't stop pushing at the top, that's a common mistake. People tend to take a break at the top of the hill but that's the best time to push yourself to top speed as you go down and then take a break while you're on the downhill.Originally posted by strykergt Any advice how can i utilize my indoor trainer to work on hills. I have been practicing on flat most of the time and when i checked one time the elevation of the HID im planning this Nov. wala! its rolling hills. The hilly routes are 50 mins away. Joe is lucky he is from Cali he steps out the door there goes the hills. |

Veteran 493 Chicago, Illinois | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open Yeah it's pretty sweet here for that. Within about 20 minutes drive is all the hills I could possibly want, from short rolling hills to straight up the side of a mountain. |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open Cayrip's log is interesting and educational. In getting ready for my HIM I lost track of what was coming up in our area. I realized today that we've got an "Ultraman" event this weekend. For anyone who needs something harder to aim for than an Ironman an Ultraman is a three day event: Day 1 - 10km swim (the length of Skaha Lake), then a 145km bike ride (it is actually 144.x km) that includes a local hill climb known as "the wall". Day 2 - 275km (274.x km) bike ride. Day 3 - 84.33km run (double marathon) This is not something I aspire to. A fellow I swim with volunteered as one of an athletes support group and he wound up running 50+km himself on the 3rd day. Maybe one year I will volunteer to be support crew. This year there are only 29 athletes registered including 6 women. Apparently there are now 4 Ultraman locations in the world - Penticton, Hawaii (World championship), United Kingdom and Florida. I'm embarrassed to say I went and bought a new bike helmet today and it matches my bike. I've never tried to be "matchy" before but I just liked the look of it. It's a Giro, Savant if anyone knows about such things. |

Hopefully the radio silence means everyone is busy out there training. I'm tapering. Tapering is awesome, I'm great at tapering. Not really being as focused in my tapering as I should be. Really should jog and bike today, but I may not get to either. Excited for my race though. Exactly one week from today I should be a couple miles into my run. |

Joe: thanks for the stats. All: Just curious if you know what each Hasher/Masher is training for. Trying to get a sense for what other Sprint-ers are training like. Won't make a difference, since I'm a few weeks from my taper for first Sprint on September 1, and I'm sticking to my training program (maybe even a adding a little more running, plus frequent core/strength workouts). Just curious, though. Thanks. G |

Member 46 Colorado Springs, Colorado | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open I'm training for an Olympic tri at the start of September, but I've got some more mileage because I'm also doing a half at the end of August. I'm focusing the most on bike mileage/speed because that has always been my weakest leg. My run mileage will decrease a lot this month because my leg is hurting where my old stress fracture was and I don't want to aggravate it. |

Veteran 288 | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open I have stopped training for Tri's at the moment. I'm currently registered for my first HM on Dec. 1 in Florida. I still plan to work in cycling and swimming to shoot for my first Olympic next year. Money is too tight for any other races for the rest of the summer. Plus, still getting my feet wet with the new job. Good luck to all whom still have races to go. May the Legs be with You! Tom |

The last couple weeks in your logs look a little light in the running category, is that per the plan or are your legs hurting?Forgive my bad memory, but is this your first tri? |

Thanks for the feedback. It is my first tri. Been training since early June and sticking to a 16 week plan (missed the first 3-1/2 weeks of my plan because of a strained back and some family stuff). Legs are great. That blip is just an artifact of me jostling the schedule around. I was out of town and had to swim when near pool. Bike when near a stationary bike, and run as much as I could fit in. Actually, the week before, I ran 6.5 miles of hills out in the country on vacation. Longest run so far (and probably in my life!). That's why the following week looks light. I just worked extra days on vacation and took Sunday off (my long run day) for travel home. If anything, I've been running more than the plan at times (to prep for a 5k I did a few weeks ago). |

Can't believe I did more of anything than strykergt! But it seems I need more biking and running. So I have improved my 100 yd swim by 10 seconds over several months of training. That translates to... 3 min faster on race day! Been feeling crummy the last couple days. Hope my nap this afternoon helped. |

Extreme Veteran 1704 Penticton, BC | Subject: RE: Hashers and Mashers - Open I've got a week of training and then a taper for my Challenge Bike Relay (180km). The race is 3 weeks from today and I'm not happy with how I feel. I went out today for a 120km ride and I was 15 minutes faster than last week but I was just as bagged by the time I reached the top of Yellow Lake so I'm worried about how slow I am with all the climbing and how uncomfortable I was on my saddle. I'm hoping my bike fitting will make enough of a difference that I'll be able to ride with a lot less saddle discomfort and ride another 60km comfortably. After the bike relay I may sign up for an Oly on Sept. 8th. I'll have to decide pretty soon. |
