I hope this is nothing more than a nuisance on your training road. Will you be able to keep working out on an easier basis and being careful not to overdo it? Sometimes it is hard to hold yourself back isn't it?

I want to focus on running this year and increase my time/mileage each week plus run up to 4 times per week but so far I'm just holding at about 2hrs/wk mainly because I'm being cautious not to cause injury.

Ortho says I'll need to be in a boot for 3-4 weeks. Will re-evaluate after complete rest. Says with the boot, I can do some stationary bike, but that's it. Provisional diagnosis of tendinosis, which is more degenerative than inflammatory. Won't know until we see how the rest goes and maybe an MRI. Take a long-term view and go slow is all I can say. My problems started after I upped my running from 3 to 5 times a week. Started having the problems after a couple months. GO SLOW!

That sucks Gary. Hope the full rest does the trick. Might be a good time for some core and strength training. Hang in there. Injuries can be depressing.

PsyTri - Your treatment sounds like a slow tedious process. Hopefully, it will resolve fairly quickly and you'll be out running again soon.

On your own you could try Vitamin E to help with the tendon repair and once the boot is off you could try some easy self massage & stretching to the tendon. But I would only do them if your Ortho agrees (or a physio). The Vit E can't hurt you if you decide to take it. Good luck and keep us up to date on how you're healing.

Chris - Welcome back.

All - What do you think of this - I have a GranFondo ride (160km/100mi bike ride) on July 13th; then I'm considering swimming the "Across the Lake" event July 19th. It's just a typical swim that we swim three days a week through the summer (except its 60km away and DEEP); then the following weekend I have the Ironman Calgary 70.3 on July 27th.

I want to do all 3 events but the GF and the 70.3 are for sure. Would the swim be too much? I would likely swim 2K on the Friday and Monday if I don't do the swim event. Just not sure it isn't too much.

Went out today for another run and it was a great day for it. It was supposed to be raining, windy and cold but it was sunny and the wind wasn't bad at all. I was even a bit overdressed.

Tay - I hadn't planned to run about 5mph but that seems to be where I am consistently running. I wouldn't mind working up nearer to 11minute miles but I'm not pushing it.

Welcome back. I was kinda wondering what happend to you. I remembered you inquiring about your Roadie+ Aerobars fitting the last time. I read your Half Iron race report before you just posted here and I am glad you still continued. Congratulations!!! on your Sub.6 Half Iron.

Again Welcome back bro, most of us are back again training for our Half Iron this year would be nice if you could share what helped you the most on your training

Thanks very much Carl.

Its funny that you remember me asking about the aero bars. I am actually tinkering with them again right now! After doing my first Oly and then the Half Ironman I decided I would do a couple more HIM's. And if I'm going to do that I want to go faster if I can. So right now I'm trying to really drop the front end of the bike (as well as being steeper in the seatpost) to get into a much more aero position. My bike has quite a high front end and I'm having to go all out to drop it down. I think I have one more change to make and I'll be there.

Also, I'm more than happy to share my thoughts about training for your first HIM. I'm no expert but I'm happy to share what worked (and didn't) for me the first time around. I also trained a bit with another first timer whose training was very different to mine but worked for him. I will jump on later tonight and do this.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi George,

About your string of events, I think the swim would be fine if you really want to do it. If it had been another event involving your legs I would have said it was too much, but its not. And you're unlikely to injure yourself swimming. You might just need to manage how much other swimming you do in those last couple of weeks.

I would just make one comment, in my experience a good taper is ULTRA important. Better to taper too much than too little, particularly for your legs.

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks a lot Mike.

I've been travelling really well. Did my first Oly and first HIM recently, and loved them both (much better than the sprint distance for me). I've also had some challenges since last time I was here. I smashed my knee on the concrete during a training run and lost four months to injury. But I took it slowly and it healed well. I then screwed up my first Oly attempt in Noosa. A weird mechanical problem stopped me from getting out of T1. But after that I got the whole tri thing back on track, and I learnt a lot because of those mishaps.

I've signed up for Noosa again this year as well as Challenge Melbourne in Feb 2015. I also intend to do another local HIM in November this year.

One thing you might be able to help with... I am thinking about training for a marathon, or at least start training and see how the body holds up. Any advice...? I am running a half marathon at about 1:50 pace at the moment (or maybe a little quicker).

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Carl,

I was thinking about what helped the most with my training... The main thing for me was that I didn't do much training for the sake of training (I didn't follow a training plan at all). Most of what I did was done for fun without a real training program focus. Every time I went out I had some personal achievement I was aiming for, but they were not training goals. They were really just things that I wanted to do and things that gave me personal satisfaction. I need this because I am no good at normal training programs.

I am not for a moment suggesting this is the best approach to racing fast or becoming the best athlete you can be. But if its not fun then I won't do it, its that simple for me. I really enjoyed my "training" which meant I did more and went harder.

Having said that I always kept in mind the components of a good training plan. I never did sessions that I didn't think has some genuine training value, I rested when my body was telling me it needed a break, I managed my loads (particularly when the long runs got longer), and I tapered properly.

The real downside of my training approach is that it means I don't swim, almost at all. I don't like swimming laps and I've not been able to find a way to make swimming fun. So... I just don't do it. Not great advice but that's just me. If I had more time, and could commit to a regular time slot, I reckon joining a tri club would help me a lot but the regularity just doesn't suit my life. I get very limited training time and most of what I do is squeezed in when ever I get the chance.

My tips:

- Figure out what motivates you (self motivation is far more powerful than any training program)
- Find a way to incorporate this into your training
- Make it fun, both training and racing.
- Be a sponge (read lots, talk lots, be a student of the sport)

That's all I've got for you.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris

Very good stuff up there. When i did my half iron last year i worked too hard to the point of losing recovery time. I could have done better if i realized
"Harder is not Better" I even came to a point of getting sick for 2 weeks. I am doing my next Half IRon in two months and i am just following a light plan. I am really surprised how you made the swim training minimal time. You sure do have good mental strength recovering after 4 months.

Thanks Again Bro

Cheers!!!

I think that would be fine. If you have some doubts, just take it easy on the swim instead of going all out since you'll be tapering for your 70.3.

I haven't done an official marathon yet. Running on the road is pretty hard on your body so I would consider doing a trail marathon and training on trails. It will need less recovery than road running which in turn will allow you to keep your bike volume up.

Yeah Mike its great. I do not reccomend that you start with hot yoga though its pretty extreme.

Some other benifits from the core strengh and flexability. Is that yoga gives you a centred feeling, and it's princably about being aware of your body, breath which I feel all translates to triathlon training.

Thanks for the support, George and Mike. It is depressing, but I'm going to do what the doc says and do a lot of crunches and see how it goes. If all goes well, I'll be ready to ride when the bike gets here in a few weeks!

Here's my best shot at the stats. I spot checked Joe and Tay, and their stats are true. I can't vouch for the rest of you! If your stats are not posted, it's either because your logs were empty for February or because they were not made public.

I'm also attaching an excel spreadsheet in case this copy-paste approach is not entirely readable. Aaron is returning to prior form. He's the man to beat. We have some serious competitors in the group, so it should be an interesting rest of the month to see who ends up on the top of the heap. Do some extra mileage for me!

Cheers.

PsyTri - Not a concern but my cycling mileage was 111mi. My overall time was correct though. Thanks for doing the stats again.

Cadnams - Your Challenge Melbourne race - is it a half or full distance? I'll be looking it up tonight to check it out.

Wow, a lot of chatting in the last day
I'm liking the stats but it seems the only chance I have to win anything is if we create a category for 'most balanced' training
(Or if I just go mad on the bike until the end of the month.... might just do that lol)

Can I ask you all something? I've been getting more and more tired even though I have been sleeping plenty, I'm wondering if maybe it's still not enough... (I would love the excuse to sleep more). How many hours do you sleep?

The swim is ALWAYS a cause for concern when it comes to competing in a triathlon. This is the event for which you need to concentrate on RELAXING.
