Speed work runday! 2 mile warm up followed by 4 at tempo. So I tried out Jackie's suggestion to start out slower and increase. I just wasn't sure what I could hold and I wanted to practice going a little faster for each mile. So I did 1 mile at 9:50, 1 at 9:40, and 1 at 9:30 and 1 at 9 finishing at 8:45 for the last little bit just because I could. I heard Dennis post, start uncomfortable and stay there like a mantra over and over in my head. It was uncomfortable for me but I also set a new Beth Land Treadmill record! Thanks guys!

You have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable! Nice work on the treadmill!

This morning I spent an hour on the trainer. My planned workout was something that my coach called the "hamster wheel." Basically it meant that I needed to go 60 minutes at a constant speed and resistance. So that was boring. This evening I dragged the hubby out of the apartment to go for a swim. We spent 45 minutes swimming laps, including some speed work. Way more fun than the bike

Adding in trainer rides on Weds and Thursday.

@Mitch - love the spreadsheet and the Type A organizational skills.

@Dennis: what's worse than the unknown of the marathon experience, is the known experience of having gone through it and then going at it again. Whatever you think it will be, will be totally different. The only wisdom any of us can provide is that you must respect the distance. Alberto Salazar described a marathon as 20 a mile training run followed by a 10K race. The last 6 miles are dark for everyone - trust your training and fight any urge to go faster than you planned early on. You will see the importance of holding it together during the last 10K while many others are crumbling. I've been on both sides of the equation and much prefer the non crumbling path.

Dennis - I know its not what you want to hear but I have never experienced issues uploading/syncing with my garmins - FR305, FR70 and FR920XT.

I use windows and garmin express, and previously directly from BT Log.

Your right Mark, I didn't want to hear that. It's getting so bad that I was actually looking at the 920XT on the Garmin site today. I would love to have the ability to upload with my phone via Bluetooth instead of my laptop. But I was just dreaming, definitely can't afford that right now, I still have a bike on lay-a-way!

X2 on Joe's good comments for Mitch and Dennis, right on!

Regarding the upcoming Tour of Sufferlandria which starts tomorrow (or officially Sat.), we will be celebrating my oldest daughter's Bday this weekend away from the city, so I will have to do my initial rides (Elements + The Long Scream) tomorrow morning before leaving and then the Blender on Sunday night.  The good thing is that TOS gives you a 24hr window to complete your daily workout, if not I would be out from the beginning.  I will also have to skip my half marathon race on Sunday, but I'm prioritizing quality time with the family (building up some points which will come in handy later on with my full IM's).

Actually 50 hr window...the day starts when the sun crosses the international date line. Believe us in the ET zone could start at 5am Friday morning.

I am really proud of how so many people on this forum are sticking to the challenge this month. Once you get through Jan, you will be hooked. Don't be like those New Year Resoluters in the gym.

Breakthrough swim yesterday, changed arm position.

3k swim cut down to 2k - once a week is not enough; I must be more consistent :-)

@Jackie - curious, can you describe the arm position change?

1st day of the Tour of Sufferlandria done! The first workout Elements of Style gave me a false sense of security only to be squashed by The Long Scream with its 30 min time trial.  I was begging for mercy at the end and this is only the first day, hahaha.  Enjoy my fellow TOS mates!

With this being my first ToS I have quite a bit of anxiety as how I will respond. I'm looking forward to the first workout tomorrow!

50 min MAF run, 5 miles at 10 min/mi. I'm loving the Low HR approach. I've only ran 5 miles a handful of times in my life.

Your training plan is a guide but you don’t blindly follow it. You shouldn’t know exactly what you are going to do until the day you are to do it.
